2.0 out of 5 stars works but won't communicate with computer
I've tried everything to get my computer to communicate with the UPS (using USB and then Serial). Nothing has worked. I'm running Vista 64 bit which the driver software supposedly supports. The usb port is giving a signal through the cable but Windows/driver can't make sense of it.

The UPS does pick up when the power goes down at the outlet so at least there's...

This review is from: CyberPower PP1100SW Smart App Sinewave UPS - 1100VA/700W AVR 7-Out Tower SNMP/HTTP (Electronics)
I have used APC UPS backups exclusively. I was surprised like many people when one of my powerful APC backups would not run my Dell Studio XPS 9000 computer. When I called Dell about the problem, they were surprised and couldn't really help. When I talked to APC support, they knew all about the problem. They said I needed a backup that would produce a real sine wave because of the requirements of the power supply that was included with the Dell computer.

The APC person told me what APC unit would solve my issue. However, the unit was pretty expensive, and from reading the reviews, the unit was super noisy all of the time. I ended up ordering the CyberPower PP1100SW because it was cheaper. This unit actually works and is quiet. While the unit has a fan, the fan only turns on when there is a power loss. Under normal use, the unit makes no noise. If there is a quick brown out, my Dell keeps running and the unit stays quiet. If there is a power loss, after a few moments, only then does the fan turn on. This is all fine since the goal at that point is to run the machine long enough to get everything shut down properly.

If you are worried about noise and price, this is the unit to get! APC needs to get their act together and make their units quiet and reduce the price.

Very pleased with the unit and technical support. CyberPower is pleasure to deal with. Ordered the unit to have pure sineware power. The first unit arrived with the power plug bent too badly due to bad factory packaging. The Amazon.com shipped a replacement unit promtly and scheduled UPS pickup for the bad one. The second unit had difficulty with USB communication following wake up after sleep mode on Windows 7 64-bit. Only power down/up would help. I submitted the technical support request; it was promptly responded to. I called the technical support agent, who agent sent an updated version of software.

I needed a pure sinewave UPS for my new speed-demon Dell Studio XPS 9000, which won't work with older non-sinewave UPS systems. Many of the new systems use a different power factor power supply and require the new style UPS. This one works great, and the price is excellent. I used to swear by APC UPS's, but have had less success in recent years. The APC replacement batteries are horribly expensive, whereas the CyberPower uses generic batteries that you can get at any battery store for less than half the price of an APC battery. Since most batteries need to be replaced every few years, it makes the CyberPower an easy thing to recommend. I now have 3 systems running on CyberPower units, and am impressed with the quality and price point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best UPS on the market!, August 20, 2010

This review is from: CyberPower PP1100SW Smart App Sinewave UPS - 1100VA/700W AVR 7-Out Tower SNMP/HTTP (Electronics)
This is my first UPS, and I'm pretty sure it must be the best one on the market. It is plenty powerful for both my very high end gaming PC, work PCs, network equipment, 5.1 speakers, and phones all at the same time, with PLENTY of wattage to spare. It is also "true sine wave" so there are zero compatibility issues. The software included, which you are better off getting the latest version of online from the manufacturer, works flawlessly under Windows 7 64-bit and is full of interesting and useful statistics. The unit also includes an AVR (voltage regulator) and surge supressor all in one. I can now sell my old AVR unit! I recommend this to anyone with a home office or who is concerned about data loss, etc. The unit is also completely silent, despite the fan that only runs when the battery is used. The self-test function is great! All in all, I am incredibly impressed with this unit.

About the only negative is that there is no way to disable the power button via software. Might be an issue if you have toddlers.

Reason I got this:
Active PFC power supplies claim to require Sinewave UPS. Rather than risk loosing data or damaging the PSU, I went with it. Normally would have looked at APC. However their prices for Sinewave UPSs are much higher.

Pros:
Self Test = no power loss.
Yank Cord Test = no power loss.
Software very easy to use, works fine in Windows 7 64bit. (Downloaded directly from website, never touched the CD). Fully integrates into Windows.
Replacement batteries not crazy expensive.
My setup currently pulls up to 490W, (1 computer + 1 monitor at full load). I haven't tested to see how well it handles more than that. I will be adding a RAID case and a second monitor so max drain will go into 500s.
Price right for sinewave UPS at this wattage.
Doesn't look cheap.
Good box and packing material.

Cons:
Slight buzzing, even when computer is asleep. You can barely hear it, definitely could not hear it over a quiet computer, but in dead silence you can hear it. I think simply covering 4 sides with a cutout box or putting it behind stuff would hide it.

Fan audible when running at over 50% load. My computer uses very silent fans so it is actually quite audible especially for the 15 seconds it's on after the power draw is back to idle. Again box/placement should help minimize this.

Heavy, yes all UPS's are heavy. Seems more than 32 lbs, but could just be the shape.

Speckled material coating is odd looking compared to modern 'blinged out' hardware. Definitely not something to show off, just keep it hidden and let it do it's job.

Very happy so far.

-Updated after one year-
Still working good. Never Lost Power. Currently is powering a mini-itx server, an external raid enclosure, and my workstation. Monitor software rarely doesn't update power status and saw a crash or two (just restart to fix). During a day of voltage irregularities in the power, there was a clear audible sound when the UPS enabled/disabled (it was the only reason I know it was going on), slightly annoying but a good test for the UPS and it worked as expected.

I was forced to buy a new UPS because my new computer system required a pure sine wave backup as opposed to the simulated sine wave version I had been using for years. Believe me, watching your system crash when the power dips--and then spend an hour while the RAID array tries to self-verify--is very unpleasant. Setup was incredibly easy (so long as you don't have problems lugging around 40 pounds of equipment and, while on your knees, placing it under a desk and out of the way). I had no problems at any end of the process, and the UPS works flawlessly (cut the power at the breaker box to test). Really no complaints, and the system even identified, and constantly corrects, a voltage issue with my electric company, and ensures clean, clear power is going to my stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power out? No Problem with this UPS, November 23, 2010

This review is from: CyberPower PP1100SW Smart App Sinewave UPS - 1100VA/700W AVR 7-Out Tower SNMP/HTTP (Electronics)
I spent a lot of time researching a UPS. I wanted a durable, pure sine wave system that could handle my Plasma tv and Xbox.
My issue is that the apartment I live in has only two old edison fuses for the whole apartment. So when summer rolled around and the AC we bought kicked in, then we could only have the AC and two computers running, or the AC and the TV/Xbox. Any more and the fuse blew shutting everything down. Inevitably we blew fuses and I figured that isn't good for electronics, plus the voltage was sitting at only about 105, so a little low. Given all that I wanted to get a UPS.

Before I got this I bought it's big brother the 1000w one. I couldn't be happier with either. They both work great, have good battery life and have a decent web interface.

This unit is very well built with a steel casing, heavy duty rubber feet and a very heavy durable feel to it. It has two batteries and a hefty 1700+ surge protection rating.
When it is running full blast it does get a little noisy since the fan has to cool the unit, but it was quite a bit quieter than my AC and to be honest, I got used to the occasional noise from. Good trade off for peace of mind.

The power went out at our building for a day and this unit was very useful as I could keep some lights on running just from battery.

Overall a very worthy purchase. The price premium over a cheaper CyberPower is based on this unit being a pure sine wave and a very durable well built UPS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needed a SINE UPS for Dell XPS 9000, October 7, 2010

I recently purchased a new Dell XPS 9000 and noticed that my older APC UPS was not working, did a bit of research and found that the old one was Square output instead of Sine output. The power supply in this Dell requires Sine. The unit took 1 day to arrive with 2 day shipping from Amazon and I had the new UPS up and running within 5 minutes. The software works fine with Windows 7 (64bit) and installation was easy. All of my previous UPS systems have been APC and this is my first CyberPower and I found that the unit was less expensive than the APC Smart line UPS and everything installed fine. If I have any problems with this unit I will update my review. If you have an older UPS and a newer system and you have a power outage you will notice your machine trying to power on and if it won't while on battery then you may also need a SINE UPS, check with your PC manufacturer.

I hate Dell for not knowing why my new Studio XPS 9000 computer would shut off without any reason. I spent days on the phone with Dell tech support and they were going send a tech to tear apart my new computer. I read the reviews on Amazon about Studio XPS 9000 and using the CyberPower Sinewave UPS. Dell had no idea how to fix the problem until I told them it needed a Sinewave UPS. I have been trouble free for a year and have been extreemly happy with the UPS. Works great and no problems ever.

I also had to get this backup because I have a DELL which is incompatible with the cheaper backups systems. I was hesitant to purchase this because of the price but didn't see much of a choice. Anyway I got it and have been very happy for the past few months. The case is well made and I think it's metal. It seems sturdy enough. It is TOTALLY quiet. It makes no noise at all except when charging and that only happens after a blackout when the power comes back on.

I'm writing this review because a few nights ago while I was working on my computer the power went out. I didn't know what had happened because the only things that went off were my printer and a lamp in my office. The power supply worked flawlessly and kept me powered for about 3 minutes, then the power came back on. I was running my big Dell XPS tower, a 24" monitor, 21" cintiq, speakers and subwoofer, and an external backup harddrive. As a freelance artist I can't lose work so I was really psyched at how well this works. When the power came back on, the fan kicked in for about 10 minutes maybe, while it was recharging to 100%. I hadn't heard it before that or since, except when I set it up and it fully charged itself. And that fan is about as loud as my DVD drive when it gets spinning. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a power back up. This thing is awesome.
