I seem to be the first person to review this product. How can that be? I have had PowerDirector for more than a year and am now on my third version. I upgraded from PowerDirector 11. Before that I had version 10.

I keep upgrading because the program is so important to me - not because of some new feature that I must have. I had used Adobe Premiere ( the full version) for several years. But then my video needs gradually diminished and I got newer machines. I had no non-linear editor on my PC at all. Then when I launched my new video project I had to choose a new editor.

My first instinct was for Adobe Premiere but I wanted to buy the less expensive cut-down version. I downloaded the trial version and tried to use it. When I had used the full version of Premiere I had always had stability problems. I used to save my work often because it would occasionally freeze up and I would have to re-boot. The Premiere Elements version did this even more often. The Sony Vegas download trial wouldn't even load. So I turned to the product - PowerDirector - that while it got good reviews, was unknown to me. It runs like a train. It never crashes.

I make video lectures that I mount on YouTube. I make one a week. That's a very ambitious schedule. Everything has to work if I am to keep grinding out a new movie every week. I need software reliability. PowerDirector gives it to me.

I shoot in raw AVI. I only compress the movie down to WMV or YouTube at the very end. I have a lot of intermediate steps in my production process. I have to be careful to maintain the best quality as long as possible. This means I work with very large video files. I twenty minute video will run more than a hundred gigabytes. Each segment is typically five or ten gigabytes.

This product is aimed at making video editing simple. But as a result it creates some problems. For example it won't accept any video input. If you wish to make a lossless video file for editing and then do the final editing on Power Director, that is not possible. It only recognizes a limited set of codecs and you can not use installed codecs such as Huffy which is a good compressed format which is lossless. In addition I have had difficulty with it recognizing mjpeg format on one of my computers. In the end my big concern is with 3D editing.

PD only recognizes a limited set of possible input or output formats. It recognizes 2X compressed frame 3D formats, but not full frame over/under or side by side. It also can not handle 3D as 2 separate files. As such it has severe limitations. Sometimes you need to create a lossless format file for editing by external programs such as VirtualDub, and then use a full featured video editor to create the final product. But the limited set of codecs make this impossible with PD. Since 3D was implemented in V10 one would think that they could add the extra formats by this time.

PD does have one feature that a practically all other editors lack, namely the ability to close caption a video. While it is only available as a single stream, that is adequate for a lot of uses. So far there is no good consumer level editor which handles all 3D formats well, and none of the others have closed captioning. PD has been touted as being the fastest and most stable editor, but if it does not have the needed features, speed will not be helpful.

OK, my concern is with what many would consider advanced features, so PD may be excellent for the more casual user.

Dear John,

Thank you for your purchase of PowerDirector 12 and for providing your feedback.

PowerDirector supports all the latest and most popular video formats that are recognized as industry standards. However, we value your opinion and thank you for letting us know your individual requirements. I will pass on this information to our development team for further investigation.

In the meantime, I suggest that you try using the Intelligent SVRT feature in the Produce window. PowerDirector will recommend a production profile to match your project and help you to avoid loss of quality during production.

I have been using PowerDirector 12 Ultra for a current project and at the same time using Sony Vegas Studio Platinum 12 for the same project. I have found that PD 12 is much easier to use and understand and has more of the features that I normally use (e.g., menu, title, transitions). It also creates DVDs/production files much faster than Sony. Thus far, PD12 has not crashed or locked up but sometimes there is a delay until the computer catches up. In the past I have also owned/used Adobe Premier Elements(good) and Pinnacle Studio (horrible). Most of what I do is videos of grandkids (football, soccer, baseball, etc), Four stars instead of 5 because PD12 doesn't appear to have music files unless you purchase them separately through Smartsound.

WOW! I decided to download a trial version after horrific experiences with Pinnacle and Corel VideoStudio. The reports of crashes are true. The first thing I did was connect my DV source and click the "Capture" tab and a popup box came up that says "Initializing DV device...please wait" It stopped at 70% and then froze for over 10 minutes, and finally said "Not Responding". I googled this and others have had the same problem with the crash at 70%. I could not even close PowerDirector with Task Manager, as others have also noted. I had to reboot my PC. This happens every time I click the "Capture" tab. I am using a Canopus ADVC-55 DV capture device, which worked fine with both Pinnacle and Corel. I also verified that the program is not blocked by the Windows firewall. PowerDirector should not have to "initialize" the Canopus device. It is a simple DV converter. Anyway, I literally cannot use the program.

I noticed that there are a number of patches on Cyberlink's website. But with the trial version I cannot install these, and I am not going to buy a full version to find out if the patches will work.
