Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 Standard [Old Version]

For Blu Ray users PowerDVD 10 Standard and Deluxe are a total scam. Why? Because only PowerDVD 10 Ultra decodes VC1 files, which comprise a very large chunk of the Blu Ray discs out there. Standard and Deluxe do not.

I discovered that after paying the full price for this to "upgrade" from PowerDVD 7 I couldn't play almost any of my Blu Ray titles as they were VC1 and an "Unsupported Format". When I figured out that only Power DVD Ultra would play VC1 I decided to look into upgrading. It turns out the "upgrade" is nearly $70, close to price of buying it new.

If you must buy a product from such a sleezy company as Cyberlink get the Ultra version and save yourself from essentially have to buy it twice to watch your movies.

And yeah, the interface is really annoying.

If you're a video editing buff, you'll enjoy this software. If, however, you value your privacy and figure you might -- someday -- want the option of de-installing this software without paying a heavy price for it, I recommend you find something less intrusive. De-installing any of CyberLink's software will leave with hundreds if not thousands of Registry entries which are nigh impossible to delete, as well as applications still running surreptitiously in the background which are difficult to stop and remove. It can be done, but it may take you many hours and you may be left with a hobbled Registry if you're not just real good at what you're doing and very careful to boot. Software companies should be held accountable for these kinds of horrible practices. Personally I would give this a three thumbs down except for the software's usefulness.

If you store your DVDs on your hard drive as I do, you need this player. It plays VOB files right off your HD and plays them back with up-scaling so they look as good as if you played them off an up-scaling DVD or Blu-Ray player.

This product looses one star for not allowing you to use 'cinema mode' for files. (Its a mode that hides all the controls. As it is, while playing files the control bars MUST be on screen... WHY?)

Power DVD10 does a good job of playing DVD's and does upscale fairly well. My only complaint is the "Movielive" part of the program. Since the software is constantly conected to the web, they know what you are watching and are constantly proding for feedback. If there is a way to shut "movielive" off I have been unable to figure that out to date. What I watch is my business and I prefer my privacy to the constant bombardment of their trying to solicit my input on movies I have no desire to watch let alone give feed back on.

For some reason, neither earlier versions of PowerDVD nor this version work with my system; in fact, they lock it up entirely. I suspect this is an incompatibility with one or more other video programs installed. Rather than fuss with it, I've returned PowerDVD 10 to Amazon for a full refund, which was immediately forthcoming.

This is in reference to PowerDVD 10. I have bought 3 versions of this software, I have no confidence that this will be any better - read on for the review of my previous experiences with this software.

This program does work, but is high maintenance. Constant reminders to upgrade to the newest version.

Worse it reminds the user of periodic updates (which I would expect) - except clicking on downloading (or cancelling) the updates freezes the program. The software updater is broken as well - after downloading it wants to remove the prior installation, and then it doesn't install.

I'm a system builder and have done more clean installs and repairs that I can count. NEVER have I encountered a program as difficult to work with as this one. Watching the last season of Lost my family had to ensure a system reboot because of this program. I will keep my media PC for home (hi-def) movies, but I do plan on buying a standalone Blu-ray player instead of shelling out more money for this piece of junk. It is a shame, because I would like to find a good blu-ray player - but this is not it.

I have had the unfortionate expeiriance of having to deal with their customer service. What they don't tell everyone is that their programs arent good for life. I have had to uninstall and reinstall their program about 5 to 8 time most due to the program itself and their patches. Plus I had to reinstal windows. When I installed it again and entered the key it sais this key has been used to many times and I need to contact custome support and purchase a new key. This is for a program I paid a hundred dollars for. Well I contacted customer service not to pay enouther penny but to get me program working again for free I already paid enough. Now I am registerd at their site where you can go check out your order and it displays your reciept. Still they ask me for proof I own the program then they send me bogus links and keys that do not work. ( I tried them using differant computers and the links dont work ) I told them I have the program I paid for already just generate a new key. The only key they sent sais use by 12:00am it wont work after that. ? So if I ever need to use it again it wont work for my life long program. Its been for weeks now they are trying to make my program work no luck. I cant even count the amount of times they had me reinstall and uninstall it plus download a cyberlink cleaner. Ya thats right you need a special cleaner from them to get rid of all their program. Plus they had me reinstall windows. Even then they still sent me a link to clean the computer. They are doing everything they can to waste my time and run me away. Finaly I said why dont you just download the file from your links and send it to me with a new key. No luck thy said they cant. Ok I said then just give me a program that by updating would cost me 26 dollors and I would be done with them. I'm still waiting for an answer. So for 4 weeks plus 50 hours of my time. Still I am stiffed out of a program I paid $100 for. They have very very poor customer service and no way to call them. Since I needed a program like that I had to by Nero 10 plat. But I still want what I paid for from them. I must say there are better program out there for less and they dont hog your whole system up and way better customer service avoid this company if you expect to use a program for life. Becuase they will do whatever they can to steal your money.

Waste of time and money. Cyberlink is more interested in downloading their advertisements and playing quality is poor.

AFter I put in the blu-ray DVD and ready to watch, Cyberlink forces the user to update the product, only to download a more ads and their own version of preview, and taking more than 30 minutes and still couldn't watch my own movie!

Don't waste your money and time.
