I purchased the 425VA unit because it was on sale. Guess what? It was a big mistake. The unit worked initially but I didn't test it as often as I should have. Now the unit is about 1 year old and it does not provide any battery back-up. I know because we had a power failure and I lost my work. Replacement batteries would cost about $[...] but I'm tossing this unit in...

Got one at staples and plugged it in for a day and forgot about it.

So when I finally attached something to it, it was a week later.

A week of getting charged up.

Used it only for my pc and a 19 inch Dell LCD.

Loaded the cyberpower software, attached the usb cable between pc and usb.

Pulled the power cord from the outlet, to simulate a power outage.

The battery life quickly dropped from 100% and 30 minutes of power, down to about 80% and 11 minutes of power.

Auto-shutdown timer was set to 4 minutes until shutdown.

About 2 minutes into the outage, the battery was at 60% capacity and there was about 7 minutes of power left.

Then my pc went into auto hibernation.

Withthe side cover off, I saw my cpu fan stop turning. It appeared to be powered off.

I re-attached the power cord into 110 volts and pushed the power button, to get out of hibernation and back to using the pc again.

In a few seconds, I was at the log-in screen.

Pro's: it was on sale, about $20.

provides line power filtering

provides "JUST ENOUGH" power to get me to a safe power down, so I don't lose my work.

the auto-shutdown via the USB cable appears to work great.

Con's: Battery life is GREATLY optimisic on the outside of the item's box. The "Typical runtime" for pc and lcd monitor is listed at 23 minutes. My battery life was dropping quickly; much faster than 23 minutes.

UPS software is simplistic, but I could NOT find anywhere to change the shutdown time. I would like it to shutdown in just 2 minutes vs 4 minutes. No where do I find any options other than 4 minutes.

I consider this a glorified surge protector. As long as the line power is cleaned up and I avoid occasional power sags, I'm happy. Those little, short lived sags that knock a pc offline is what hurts. This unit should suffice to prevent such happenings.

I bought based on price.

If price were not a consideration, I'd go with at least a 1000va. That way I'd have more time to stay up and running, in event of a power outage.

Replacement batteries would cost about $[...] but I'm tossing this unit in the garbage and starting over with a quality brand such as APC.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Works Good!, February 8, 2009

I bought one of these November 2005 (3 years 2 months ago) & used it to power my cable modem, wireless adapter, a Vonage adapter, an 8 port switch, a cordless phone base station, & my alarm clock. Over the years, I've experienced several power failures, the longest being about two hours & it carried the load thru all of them. Admitedly my load is light, but it's all stuff I don't want to go bye-bye in a power failure. The unit just failed totally, no lights, no electricity out ups outlets, circuit breaker not popped, & no power failure. I oppened it up & the fuse was still ok, but the battery voltage was zero. Nothing looked obviously fried & their was no burnt smell. So it just scraped past it's 3 year warranty. I feel like I got value for my money & it fits in my 3 1/2" deep media closet. I'm buying another right now.

p.s. anybody that expects this to run a computer & monitor for very long needs to have a very unpowerful computer & a smallish lcd monitor.

Noticed in the last storm the battery backup wasn't working..Thought I had a bad unit until I started Google and everybody has issues..I have a tripp lite for my home theater room and it runs the whole system and does power cleanup..Getting another tripp lite or APC tomorrow.

I received a CP425G instead of a CP425SL, waiting to see if I get a full refund or not. The G series do NOT have a serial or USB port and no software for management.

5.0 out of 5 stars 18-Month Review, March 30, 2010

I've had this running now for 18-months and it's still working well. I've had two brief power outages and several flashouts and it sounded alarm on all occasions and held adequate power to the PC so no data was lost. I like the top plug configuration compared to my old UPS which had plugs on the back. Well worth the price.

We live in a rural community so the power goes off on a regular basis. With this product our computers have never crashed. We've owned more expensive units that seem to stop working after a year or so. This one has not failed once. We own three of them.

Like others reviews. It works fine at first, after 1 year this unit does not provide any backup function at all. I only have a PC and 19inch monitor plug into this cyberpower UPS. As soon as the electric power out, or "brown-out", just barely one millisecond "brown-out" glitch, my computer was turned off and won't powerback on again.

I have the 2 other APC UPS and they are older than the cyber power and they work perfectly on my other computers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless as a UPS, June 19, 2008
This review is from: Cyberpower CPS425SL UPS - 425VA/230W 6-Outlet RJ11 Compact Design EMI/RFI USB/Serial (Electronics)
Provides no battery backup at all - acts ok as a bulky surge protector maybe but will NOT provide power in case of regular power failure. I've had reasonable success with APC ups's, but don't bother with this one.

I would have given this 0 stars if I could.

Bought one from Best Buy. Does not work at all. Doesn't power on. By the way, those who are finding that this does not provide battery backup: You might want to do your homework. If you add up the number of watts for your monitor and the number of watts that your PC draws, that sum must be less than 255 watts! This unit can only handle 255 watts max.
