Gr 5-7-This book is designed to help students cruise the information superhighway while avoiding online dangers. In clear language the author describes a variety of cybercrimes including the illegal copying of software, cyberstalking, scams, pedophilia, and hacking. She also explains what hate groups and biased sites are and defines viruses, worms, Trojan horses, flames, and spams. Attractive text boxes highlight rules for safe Internet use and proper Netiquette. Although MacDonald discusses screening software that discourages children from visiting certain sites, she never uses the word "filter." The presentation ends with notes and warning signs on compulsive use of the Internet and some suggestions for dealing with it. Black-and-white photographs of young people add interest. The glossary, reading list, and Internet addresses are useful. Although this title covers some of the same ground as Jennifer Lawler's Cyberdanger & Internet Safety (Enslow, 2000), it includes many more examples of things to be aware of while on the Web.
