Review

"This book would be extremely useful for aspiring CISO's ... " - Dennis Devlin - CISO, CPO, and Sr. VP, Savanture, former CISO, George Washington University and Brandeis University.

"... explains what an organization needs to know to implement cybersecurity governance" - Council of Graduate Schools Testimony at the US Senate Appropriations Committee Meeting, April 29, 2014.

"What's the biggest challenge facing cybersecurity for companies and organizations? "Often it's their own people," said Mansur Hasib, author of "Cybersecurity Leadership" which was released this spring." - American News Report, April 22, 2014.

"As an expert on cybersecurity, Dr. Mansur Hasib says consumers' need for their personal information to be kept confidential and safe will be better served when health care companies make creating healthcare communities a priority." - World Congress

"Hasib has really captured and exposes the common faults with which we are all struggling in this industry.  It's humorous (I think I was laughing at my own experiences here), engaging, and I feel helps a reader question their own approaches. I was originally looking for a compendium that works as collateral reading for Cyber Security training courses, and I found it.  I genuinely recommend this work tool." - David Bickel - Chief Information Security Officer, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, State of Maryland.

"Author Mansur Hasib 84G provides practical leadership ideas for executives in any organization" - Emorywire, Emory University Alumni Association.

"I encourage anyone searching for leadership skills to read Cybersecurity Leadership" - Monyana F, aspiring student of cybersecurity.

"I think this book will change both the way we think about leadership and the way we understand information technology. I recommend this book highly to everyone." - Eric Schwartz  - Executive Director at Advena World LLC and Adjunct Professor in Economics at Montgomery College.

"Hasib references DHIN as a strong example of how a health information exchange can help improve care and also have a business model that makes it financially self-sustaining. Dr. Hasib has been a leader in IT and cybersecurity for many years." - Delaware Health Information Network

From the Author

For a quick overview of my cybersecurity model, read my article on page 53 of the Fall 2014 issue of US Cybersecurity Magazine.

More About the Author

Dr. Mansur Hasib became fascinated with computer networks long before this was being taught at any university. After completing a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Politics from Brandeis University and a Master's degree in Political Science from Emory University, Dr. Hasib migrated the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine from a mainframe to a network environment and trained about 400 of the 500 users in office automation and computer based research.

After that he led the efforts to build a highly fault tolerant network and systems at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, retired another mainframe, and trained 2500 users in the use of network technology and resources. Dr. Hasib served as Chief Information Officer and Chief Information Security Officer within the University of Maryland system and helped build the statewide research and education network in Maryland.

He then served as Chief Information Officer at the Baltimore City Health Department and implemented the City of Baltimore's first electronic health records system at all Baltimore City public schools. In addition he also implemented a cloud based restaurant inspection system using hand-held mobile devices for all food establishments in the City of Baltimore. While working for the City of Baltimore, Dr. Hasib completed his Doctor of Science in Cybersecurity (IA) from Capitol Technology University. Dr. Hasib served as Information Assurance Officer at the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange and trained hundreds of navigators, case workers, and customer service representatives in using the newly deployed systems and in resolving problems.

The author is one of the most passionate people I've met, and this book provided insight into his reflections on what is most important for managing cyber at the organizational level. His enthusiasm is contagious, and reminds us that leaders in this field aren't just managing technology, they are managing people. If you purchase this book, do it for the right reasons. You won't be disappointed. I expect a lot more to come from Dr. Hasib.

I really enjoyed this book-the pictures-and the youtube video. The book was user friendly with no bad links and no blank pages.

The author gives positive solid advice with eye opening information on cyber security, leadership roles, and how health care it works.

With a growing universal interest in technology and personal security this book will provide you an easy to read foundation. Along with technical information you'll find thoughtful positive ideas that focus on personal behavior.

My goal: To be innovative and "Dare to Try" ... you'll have to read the book to find out more about that.

Just want to precede this by saying that -- my positive review reflects my own observations of business leadership dynamics seen through the lens of this book. But any attitude in my review is all mine. Hasib is straight and professional about his analysis and recommendations. Now I bring you my positive review, but please do not confuse my tone with the author's. He is far more stable than I will ever be and keeps it professional........

Only a CEO in denial of reality can possibly rationalize keeping cybersecurity buried beneath even a SINGLE layer of bureaucracy. (How 1990's.) That so many still choose such convoluted structure is just appalling. Hasib relays this through his essays with an approach even a layman, heck,-- that even I can understand.

A better strategy? CEO's, listen up . . and be brave. You need to get a DIRECT reporting relationship with your cybersecurity manager. Period. I know. It makes you feel uncomfortable. Gosh, those pesky cybersecurity kids are never supposed to look your directly in the eye, right? Hey, they are supposed to go through Tim, in Finance! And Tim, well, you don't even really like Tim, in Finance. . . . Sigh.

So stop having your CyberSecurity Department report to Tim, in Finance. ("The 1990's called, they want their org -chart back." Har har !) Who knows what inaccuracies, and dubious filters Tim, in Finance, is throwing your way about cybersecurity? You certainly don't. Don't risk it, Madame and Mister CEO. Modern leaders know that Cybersecurity deserves direct reporting. To ignore this, you risk looking like an over-insulated tool, when things go wrong.

So rejoice! Pull cybersecurity up the org-chart! Hold hands and sing songs together!

I love this book for many reason but the one that sticks out most is the chapter, Success in the IT Field. The first step, in my opinion, is the first step in the book. Be Happy. A happy leader is a successful leader. This book is great for every depart of your organization, not just the IT department.
No matter the position, industry or status we can all be better leaders. Thanks for sharing your gifts with the world.

Cybersecurity Leadership offers a useful and somewhat unique perspective on information security from the perspective of a former CIO. Through a series of vignettes and short chapters the author provides numerous, practical examples of the people and process aspects of effective information security. Most books on the subject focus on the technical aspects. This book would be extremely useful for aspiring CISO's lacking the management and organizational experience to be prepared to lead a large information security program, or for CIO's or other IT executives who want to learn more about how to make information security an effective component of their overall program.
