I have had a Nikon D70 for 7 years and just recently the mirror inside broke. I chose not to have it repaired and looked at the "high-quality" point and shoot cameras to replace my D70. After MUCH research, I chose the Sony DSC HX1. The camera is very easy to use and I like the sound it makes when you use the menu or when you focus - it lets me know it is working. I found the picture quality, for the most part, excellent. The problem I still have is the "action shots". I took pictures of my granddaughter in gymnastics and out of her "two arms and two legs" there was always one limb that was blurry. I tried the 5 shot "burst" mode, but that did not do any better and then you do have to wait until the 5 pictures load to your camera. I never did try the 10 shot "Burst Mode" as I was afraid that I would miss her next gymnastic move. After using a professional SLR camera for so long, I seem to be more comfortable looking through the eye piece as it is clearer to me as I am 67 yrs old and I do not see to well. If I look at the LCD screen, I have to put on my glasses. In all honesty though, the camera does an excellent job. The movies are great and the 20 times zoom is remarkable. The Panorama Feature is awesome!Wait til you try it. It is really an easy camera to use and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a "high-quality" point and shoot camera. P.S. I got my D70 fixed ($240) and will use it for indoor action shots. If I go on a vacation - I will take the Sony HX1. Much smaller and lighter and easier to take around.

I took a few hundred pics so far and recorded few minutes of video (testing purposes only). I am well satisfied so far. I am a rookie, just got into digital photography not too long ago. Ofc if you are thinking of point and shoot cameras - this one is not for you (can find something way cheaper, and won't even notice the difference), but if you want to play a bit with various settings, this camera is what you need. The only thing I would like to see in this camera is wides aperture range, .raw format, and 60 fps video recording, but for this price this is a really nice piece of equipment.

the quality of the pictures is just AWESOME.. is the first camera of this type I have so Im still figuring out what is the best feature to use for diferent pictures.

The zoom (20x) is fantastic, thw panoramic feature just amazing, and the feature that takes 10 pictures in one second doesn't let you lose the best picture.

In summary so far so good Im loving this camera...
