A Genuine Cybill Fan,
By NCK (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cybill Disobedience : How I Survived Beauty Pageants, Elvis, Sex, Bruce Willis, Lies, Marriage, Motherhood, Hollywood, and the Irrepressible Urge to Say What I Think (Hardcover)
I have to say that I truly loved this book. I laughed out loud many times. I really enjoyed Cybill's frankness and honesty about her past experiences. I have been a fan of Cybill Shepherd since her Moonlighting days. Even back then, there was always something that I admired about her. I couldn't put my finger on it until I read this book. Cybill reveals many secrets about her life over the years, especially her various sexual encounters. She also writes about her many experiences in movies and TV. I am a young woman and could very much relate to her tales of love, lust and betrayal. Cybill states clearly that she always did what pleased her and what pleased her was sex. Only a woman like Cybill could make a comment like that. She is so candid and such a real person. Some of us feel might feel this way but don't have the guts to say so. It's very hard to take an honest look at yourself and then reveal your soul to everyone. You can see how she has grown and realized the mistakes that she has made along the way but more importantly how she has learned from them. I admire her courage and strength for that. So, Kudos to Cybill for such an honest and humerous look at her very interesting life. I am an even bigger fan now than I was before.

Who can resist good gossip,
This review is from: Cybill Disobedience : How I Survived Beauty Pageants, Elvis, Sex, Bruce Willis, Lies, Marriage, Motherhood, Hollywood, and the Irrepressible Urge to Say What I Think (Hardcover)
I don't normally read celebrity bios but my wife laughed out loud so often while reading Cybill Disobedience by Cybill Shepherd that I just had to see why. I am not a Cybill Shepherd fan, but I enjoyed getting to know her better in this book, even when she was being clearly self-serving. Her story is made up of equal parts private history and public image. Image (her blond, beauty)and its impact on her private history is the dominant theme of the book. She shows herself constantly trying to overcome the dumb blond image while, frequently at the same time, using her beauty to seduce men she should have left alone - because she can? Needs to? Thinks she needs to?Cybill is a complex woman in many ways and transparent in others. She was self aware early in her life but late in coming to a sure understanding of her own worth and power. Lots of missteps and bad moves - frequently sexual - in between. Her coauthor, Aimee Lee Ball, should probably be credited with making this story such an easy and entertaining read. There are recurring elements of self deprecating humor and a lot of genuinely surprising anecdotes that allow the reader to feel that they are getting the inside scoop. And for those who don't really care about Cybill herself but just want the gossip, they won't be disappointed but will probably wish for more detail. The scenes with ELvis (sad and drugged up), Don Johnson (a five minute man), and the unnamed stunt men (the 'Cybill Sandwich') are more titillating than revelatory. Still amusing, however. I would recommend this for anyone who likes enjoys good gossip in a breezy, bright package.

CYBILL and the truth,

This review is from: Cybill Disobedience : How I Survived Beauty Pageants, Elvis, Sex, Bruce Willis, Lies, Marriage, Motherhood, Hollywood, and the Irrepressible Urge to Say What I Think (Hardcover)
I have been waiting for this book for a long time. Although I am younger than Cybill, I feel she portrays a realistic image of women in the media and in life in general. This book ABSOLUTELY confirmed this. Cybill's writing is to the point and honest. If you are going to do an autobiography - it should be intertaining and honest. Cybill pulls no punches and describes her life with humour (most of the time), some wisdom and a lot of honesty. I was a little surprised at some of the relationships she has had, but she will be the first to tell you "no regrets". This book is interesting, real and I have absolutely no regrets about buying it. Thank you Cybill for telling it like it really is.

Well, I did finish this book. Will delete it immediately as if washing my hands after completing a nasty task. The writing is fine. Having said that I must also say that, by the end of the book, I couldn't muster even an inkling of caring, empathy or sympathy for someone who has, by her own admission, lived a selfish and self-gratifying life while clearly not caring for anyone else's pain along the way. I have no superior moral scruples about her sex life, though, in her attempt to be tittalating her hundreds of genital encounters becomes tiring. I would venture to say there are thousands of prostitutes who had more meaningful sexual encounters; hers seem to mechanistic and sad.
Despite her many assertions that she has "learned valuable life lessons", it would seem she has not. In her professional dealings she recounts how everyone screwed her both literally and figuratively. Everyone one her professional associates seems to have been at fault at some point in the relationship. Okay, the kindle version was free but I felt both sad and soiled for having given a few precious hours of my life in reading it.

A candid memoir,

I was a rabid fan of Moonlighting and I must confess that is one of the main resaons for the purchase of Cybill Disobedience. What I found in those pages was much more. I expected brutal honesty( at least the way she saw things) from Ms. Shepard. She did not disappoint. She takes us from a detailed description of her Memphis underpinnings to the present not bothering to leave out the laundry list of men who shaped her life. Ms. Shepard's sex life is actually a character in the story anyone who has read the book will quickly realize this. The underlying theme of Cybill Dis. is the poor-me I'm beautiful yet undervalued for all my other traits scenario. Sometimes I actually feel sorry for her especially in the early portion of her life (the 60's-70's) when being looks'obsessed was expected of women but vanity was frowned upon. If anything this story can be looked at as one woman's evolution in her first 50 years. From tomboy to teen model to sexually viable young lady to TV "ice queen" to self assured woman, Cybill has played them all.

I never thought a tell-all book could bore or irritate me, especially with stories about a hometown Memphis girl making it big and sleeping with Elvis, but this one did. I was interested in hearing about Cybill's life, but after reading this book I don't care to hear any more. My copy was signed by Cybill in person, but meeting her was the high point of the whole experience and it only lasted a minute or two. I liked Cybill Shepherd, but I think a lot less of her after reading this. I don't recommend this book.

Yes, Cybill jumps in and out of bed with quite a few men, but the world used to be more carefree back in the seventies and eighties. At least she wasn't a drug addict or alcoholic. Being a blue-eyed blonde myself, I identified with some of the catty things she went through with other women. I was intriqued reading the parts about her shows Moonlighting and Cybill. She had a rough time of it, but hung in there and I am sure she is stronger for it. Christine Baranski, I was surprised to read, was a little stinker! I couldn't put the book down and I am more of a fan of hers now than I was before I read the book. She has raised three gorgeous children and done a heck of a job of it. She has nothing to be ashamed of. All you ladies need to read this! A great story and inspiration for single moms with kids to raise alone.

A No Excuses Story...,
This review is from: Cybill Disobedience : How I Survived Beauty Pageants, Elvis, Sex, Bruce Willis, Lies, Marriage, Motherhood, Hollywood, and the Irrepressible Urge to Say What I Think (Hardcover)
There are so many aspects of the "tale of Cybill" that I truly appreciate, it's difficult to be brief. The most refreshing aspect, in my opinion, is that Cybill states quite clearly..."this is what I did. Some things I wish I could change, some things I can't regret..." Trailing her by just one year in age, and a self-described late-blooming feminist, I can truly appreciate what Cybill has gone through in trying to define who she is as opposed to who she was supposed to be, in finding personal value as opposed to decorative value. Like many other 50 year old women, Cybill is still an unfinished project, but she obviously faces what is yet to come with anticipation, good cheer, and an open mind. I plan to send this book on to my 21 year-old daughter, and hope that she can avoid the obstacles placed (however discreetly) in the path of beautiful, intelligent, feeling women. Hooray for Cybill...I admire her, warts and all.

I wanted to like this book. I had a very superficial knowledge of Ms. Shepherd, based on the "Moonlighting" series, and was curious to read about the woman behind the part. I enjoy reading autobiographies and gaining insight into others and hearing their stories. I can nearly always find something redeeming about the central character. I could find nothing in this book but irrational animosity, a lack of compassion, an overabundance of self focus, self righteousness, and much confusion about boundaries... and, frankly, a lot of poorly edited writing. If this book had been written by someone younger, at least there might be the consolation that there would be time for the character to develop emotionally. The book was disappointing, to say the least, and I'm very sorry to have read it. Not a legacy I would want to leave behind, or see anyone else leave behind.

Since I live in Memphis, I looked forward to this book. I casually know two people who dated her and was interested in her perspective. Cybill has been on Hollywood's "out" list more than any other living actress. This book gives her time to have her side of the story told. But frankly, listening to her side of the story, you can envision the other side and understand why she has had relationship problems in Hollywood. I'm not sure Cybill quite gets it but thinks she does. Irrespective, she has had an interesting life and a story I enjoyed reading. If you like sex tell-alls, this is your book although she does hide some names showing at least a shred of diplomacy. She also touches on troubled relationships in her family and how she has taken four hours of therapy for the last 10 years. Probably the most fascinating part of the book is the introspective review in the last chapter. It's almost out of character with the book but does show what a deep thinker she can be. I recommend the book for a quick read about Hollywood, sexual liberation or feminist viewpoints. A menage with two men? Not your typical southern girl. |
