4.0 out of 5 stars truly beautiful, February 6, 2004
This review is from: Cyclobian Sunset (Audio CD)
this album is quiet and straitforward-no gimmicks, not a lot of weird plugins and drilling beats. and absolutely no distortion. this is much in the vein of global goon, another artist on rephlex. but dont be fooled by its simplicity-it allows the subtleties their space. this is music that will put you in a mood, and its purpose is not to push the boundaries of electronic sound. the synth programming is top notch and cylob can evoke some extremely pleasing sounds out of some analog waveforms. listen to this album a few times and you will realize that this music is absolutely beautiful. a must have for any self-respecting rephlex fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars a classic if there ever was one, June 19, 2008

This is Cylob's masterpiece, without a doubt. It came out during a very fertile time for electronica. You had Aphex's "I Care" and The Black Dog's "Spanners", to name a couple highlights from 1995. Still, "Cylobian Sunset" somehow got overlooked, and is just as great as the previous titles mentioned here. This cd was made right before the whole "Drill n' bass" thing got big and the more randomish DSP programming became the norm in IDM-land. This is very very electronic sounding yet the Casio tones and clunky, chunky dance beats posess a certain human touch. Nothing is overdone or overwhelming and the melodies are very memorable, humming along in your head long after a good listen or two. Some tracks are faster and more danceable, while others have a gentle, delicate, almost romantic mood. It's a merging of the high and low-brow, the avant garde anvil and the shiny disco ball that sounds entirely natural and unforced. I tend to overuse the word "beautiful" to describe lots of music, but this truly fits such a description. Unforgettable.

4.0 out of 5 stars sounds a little bit like certain tunes from AFX:HAB, August 5, 1999

This is a bit less experimental than the other things Cylob have done.. without trying to be catchy as hell like the latter "Rewind"-single. In comparison.. quite easy and nice listening with certain moments remainding of the beautiful melodies in label-mate aphex twin/AFX's unfortunately out-of-print and never-availible-on-CD "Hangable Auto Bulb EP (I & II).

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good electronica CD with some flaws - most genre fans should like it, though - 4.5 stars, January 5, 2006
This review is from: Cyclobian Sunset (Audio CD)
Cylob's "Cylobian Sunset" is a pretty interesting electronica album which I don't think is for everyone. It unfortunately has a couple cheesy sounding tracks ("Synek" (though catchy) and "Instant Shriek" are sometimes a little cheesy and annoying. "Ofid" is also a bad track. You'll see when you hear them). Unfortunately it's now out of print and therefore expensive which doesn't help things at all. There are no lyrics or voice samplings here, but the electronic noises are pretty unique and interesting by themselves. The mood even changes throughout the album - it starts off fast and energetic and then slows down ("Foid" is a very soft and pleasant tune, ala Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works: 85-92"). Except for "Ofid", the entire album is good-if-not-very-good. "Cylobian Sunset" is also a lovely and genuinely emotional piece. "Foid" and this song bump it up from a "4" to a "4.5". Electronica fans should like most of it. Recommended if you can find it (for a reasonable price)!

Highlights include:
everything except for "Ofid"
