Now a little bit of negative.Read more ›
The truth of the matter is the galaxy s4 is a little more flimsy than most of us would like. I had a padded folio case before I bought this one. when dropped my phone the first time from maybe 4ft off the ground, the screen cracked.
With this case I have nothing to worry about. There are 2 layer of protection to protect the back and sides from damage and what sets this phone aside is the huge lip it has to protect the screen from not only cracking but will protect the phone when you have to lay it face down. in order to utilize all functions on this phone, you will sometimes have to lay it face down.
It does add a little bulk to the phone but this phone is already super slim. I like being able to tell my phone is in my pocket.
Came with a screen protector that I am currently using. It is the third screen protector that I needed for this phone. It was the easiest to install and so far I have no complaints about it.
Buy the case. $30-$40 is cheaper than having to buy a new phone.
Unfortunately with the case on, the charger does not fit into the hole cut in the case. The cutout is a just a hair too small and I'm going to need to cut it myself for the charger to fit. You can wiggle the charger into the cutout with the phone out of the case, that's how slight the size error is. Seems a bit silly that the cutout would be cut so close to the size of the charger. Why not leave some room for play there?
The rigidity of the case also makes it a bit tough to press the volume and power buttons. Not that big of a deal, just need to get used to having to apply a decent amount of force.
The case also comes with a screen protector which is a nice plus. Overall, the case is nice and should offer great protection, but I can't help but be disappointed with a $30 case that can't accommodate the factory charger.
Cons: USB charger cut out is impractically small, difficult to remove case, buttons too rigid
Protection-wise, it supposedly does a great job. On Cygnett's website and on YouTube there is a video of Cygnett employees demonstrating the protection of the phone by dropping it at various heights, including from on top of a lift/cherry picker from a considerable height.
Now, let's get to the main reason(s) why I gave this case a sub-par rating and why I would not recommend it to a friend. The #1 reason I wouldn't recommend this case is because you won't be able to charge the phone with the case fully on it using most USB cables. When Cygnett manufactured this case, they failed to remember that smartphones need charging, and often at that, and that ample room was needed for the cut-out around the charger port. The case's charger port is too small, so it requires taking the case fully off or partially off in order to charge it with most USB cables. The original USB cable that the S4 came with will not work with this case fully on. Also my car charger won't work with it either. I find myself having to take off the hard plastic shell of the case in order to charge the phone in my car so that my battery doesn't die while using GPS navigation. Mind you, taking the case off isn't easy, especially the outer hard-shell. I almost broke it the first time or two trying to take it off. It is definitely a hassle having to take the case on and off. Luckily for me, at home I have an old LG wall charger that fits this case, although it easily slips out. This charger port cut out problem is probably an issue that the manufacturer will look into and fix in the near future, if they haven't already.Read more ›
