Background:
I commute 10 miles to and from work every day.
I work late and have to bike home in the dark.

Basic Review:
I am now able to bike at the same speed that I'd bike during daylight because of how much I can see with this light.
It is very bright and I have no problems seeing what's in front of me.
I have gone 2 weeks without charging it (3 riding hours) and it worked flawlessly

Extra Details:
2 miles of my ride is on a trail that has no lighting around at all...
This headlight is the only source of light that I have and it has been more than enough for me to use.
I'm very pleased!

Photo:
I took a picture using this headlight during the darkest part of my ride to show how bright this light gets.

I recently started bicycling into work and found that as the sun was rising later in the morning that I was going to need a light if I was to get into work safetly. After browsing around on the internet, I heard tons of awesome reviews about the Cygolite Metro 420 Lumen USB Rechargeable Bicycle Headlight, Black, One Size and was about to order one up. Amazon then suggested that I move up to the latest model for just a couple more dollars so that's what I did.

When I got the light originally, it had it written on the box that the light comes discharged and that it requires at least 5 hours of charging before you should use it. I put it on the included charging cable (plugged into my computer to charge it slowly) and within 30 minutes it showed that it was fully charged. There is one single button on the light that is illuminated when the light is on. The button also blinks when charging and stays illuminated when fully charged.

This light has several different modes for pretty much all situations: low, medium, high, DayLightning(tm), SteadyPulse(tm), and walking mode. I use SteadyPulse(tm) most of the time as it keeps the light on high and flashes every second or so to make yourself more visible to oncoming cars. I found that the DayLightning(tm) mode was bright enough to give myself a headache when I tried using it. It does increase the output of the light to 600 lumens when it pulses so that could be a reason why I got a headache. The other mode that I find myself using a lot is the walking mode which is just a normal light that is comparable to a flashlight that you would pick up at the store.

I have the Metro 420 as well which is a great light. I bought it especially for the good daylight strobe mode it has. I wanted a second for my sons bike and got this new Metro 500. The daylight strobe is way brighter and wider. The other modes are brighter and wider too - and maybe the center has a higher intensity to it. I think it's worth the extra $10 for sure.

So far I put about 100 miles during the day and about 20 at night in the dark (San Francisco/Marin County area).
Very Happy with the day flashing: pretty fast blinking, which I like, and as written on the box 600 lumen in that mode (500 steady and 600 day flashing): from over 200 ft away I see the flashing reflected in the street signage. I think I am very visible...
2 notes:
One: It takes over 3 hours to fully charge it (you see the button is lit with a green flashing light while charging, once fully charged it stop blinking and it's stays lit), but I guess that's expected.
Two: not impressed with side lighting: the side lighting is weak, because the 2 windows on the side only shed out about 1% of the total amount of light... But the overall front lighting angular distribution makes up for that: it spills some lights on the side as well, at a 75 degree angle or so... (not 90 degrees, but close). So your are visible also from the sides... and in the dark, the sides of the road are quite visible as well.
I own a Light and Motion 360+ (mounted over the helmet), and the cygolite beats the light and motion in terms of distance lighting (500 lumens... duh...) but the side lighting of the 360+ is probably better (the yellow side windows make you more visible from the side). But one thing where the Cygolite excels is day flashing: the light and motion seems to have a much weaker day flash, I think it does not reach it's full lumen potential, where the Cygolite, man! when it's on it's fully on!

OK, I gave this light three stars. The reason: I was very pleased with the light - past tense. Past tense because I no longer have it.

This is an excellent light - very bright, good coverage, good blink pattern (on/off flash and the very attention-getting flicker-on patterns), rechargeable and recharges quickly, good endurance.

Unfortunately, the clamp mount is cumbersome and clumsy - especially when used with winter gloves. The thumb screw / "quick release" clamp works OK on a rigid base (metal), but requires you to simultaneously squeeze the clamp and mess with the quick release on a rubbery base.

Now the worst thing: THE MOUNTING SHOE TO WHICH THE LIGHT ATTACHES IS BRITTLE AND CAN BREAK! This happened to me; as a result I lost this two month old, $60 light, and I will be very surprised if Cygolight gives me a break on buying a replacement.
