Book Description

January 2001
Hailed by researchers throughout the world, Cyndi's List is the gateway to Internet genealogy, providing the researcher with more than 70,000 categorized and cross-referenced links to every conceivable genealogical resource on the Internet. Cyndi's List features more than 140 categories listed on more than 430 individual web pages. The site now has about 80,000 visitors each day, with more than 18 million people having stepped through the front door of the site to date.

By 1999 numerous people were asking for a printed version of the site to help them prepare in advance for the time they spent doing their research online. Libraries and Family History Centers also expressed a need for the printed version of Cyndi's List, since with the book version next to each computer terminal, library patrons would be able to spend their limited time online in a productive manner. Hence the appearance of the first edition of the book version of Cyndi's List.

And to no one's surprise, here is the second edition of Cyndi's List--twice the size of the first edition and twice as helpful. Like the first edition, it is designed to reduce the time you spend online by narrowing the focus of your search. With the sudden and explosive growth of genealogy on the Internet, the possibilities for research have become almost endless, but Cyndi's List allows you to impose some controls on this exciting new phenomenon, turning the vast body of data on the Internet into a manageable research tool, one you can feel, touch, and read even when the power is turned off.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Banking on the success of the first print edition (LJ 9/1/99), author and webmaster Howells returns with a substantially expanded print version of her popular web site (www.cyndislist.com). Two volumes now accommodate the 30,000 additional sites and more than 150 categories of all things genealogical, including "Genealogy Standards & Guidelines," "Poorhouses & Poverty," and "Web Rings." Each category organizes its related links into subcategories, with many of the links followed by brief annotations. Readers will find links to topics as diverse as the Bulgarian royal family, Pennsylvania land records, and Dutch immigrant ships to Canada. As with the first edition, the "Personal Home Pages" category has been omitted and the "U.S. Counties, Localities and Regions" sections were condensed to save space. Obviously, the online version is and always will be more complete and current (at this writing it tops 100,000 links), but for beginning researchers or for those who prefer to browse the list at their leisure, this work serves as an excellent reference tool. Recommended for genealogy collections. Elaine M. Kuhn, Allen Cty. P.L., Ft. Wayne, IN

5.0 out of 5 stars A print gateway to the virtual world of Internet genealogy, June 7, 2004
This review is from: Cyndi's List: A Comprehensive List of 70,000 Genealogy Sites on the Internet (Paperback)
For a weighter, wider-ranging and more comprehensive reference, the standard two-volume Cyndi's List by Cyndi Howells is unparalleled and widely acknowledged as an industry 'standard'. Cyndi's List provides a print gateway to the virtual world of Internet genealogy, providing over 70,000 links listed on over 430 individual web sites. Why have a print version when the search is to be conducted online? Because it saves the researcher many hours, helping to prepare in advance for a fruitful online session.
