5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful Czech and Slovakian folksongs in superb, idiomatic performances
This generously filled, generously priced compilation brings together a broad selection of enchanting folk music from Bohemia, Slovakia, and Wallachia, recorded over a period of twenty years or so by expert, characterful singers and instrumentalists. 1.0 out of 5 stars Disneyland in Prague
The Walt Disney handling of this beautiful repertoire is more than disappointing. Flutes and harps, sustained strings, provide tedious overly long "atmospheric" introductions to voices that try very hard to be pure, folksy, ethnic, sincere, but are as phony as the arrangements. Think of the movie score of "Shane" and you'll get the picture.

Documentation, texts, and translations are disappointing, but the quality of the music and performances is so uniformly high, Supraphon deserves our gratitude rather more than our opprobriums. If these discs don't set your heart dancing, see your cardiologist before the week is out.
