Bubblegum Garage, April 15, 2003
This review is from: D-D-Don't Stop the Best (Audio CD)
I first heard this duo when a friend of mine sent me the video for Move Your Feet. Despite being visually interesting, the song itself made me want to get down and boogie all night, forever. So does EVERY TRACK ON THIS ALBUM. The energy these two put forth forms an interesting combination of garage rock, bubblegum pop, blues, disco, funk, and just about anything else you can think of. These boys know how to make a party not just rock, but rock something FUN.

Hot fun in the summertime, August 22, 2003
This review is from: D-D-Don't Stop the Best (Audio CD)
The soundtrack for summer/fall 2003? Sure could be. Junior Senior, a brand new group from out of nowhere, display an incredibly refined sense of fun on their debut album. The Atari 2600 graphics in the music video for their first single, "Move Your Feet," show these guys are definitely aiming for something different. In the end, it ends up being different than anything else available as pop music right now - though it's not necessarily too innovative. Great, danceable hooks are available in almost every song, and the singing can fool most listeners into thinking they're hearing native English speakers. Junior goes from sounding like Mick Jagger to a cross between the Beatles and Bob Dylan before the close of the album. A few songs made me go, "have I heard this before?" A quick look at the behind-the-scenes QuickTime movie on the enhanced CD will clearly show these performances weren't one-take... but the live version of Move Your Feet at the end of the album demonstrates an outstanding stage presence. You will want to see these guys live after listening through the whole CD and hearing that last song. The Explicit Lyrics sticker is very unnecessary... I heard them drop the f-bomb once, maybe twice if it was repeated in the song "White Trash." You could easily let the word sneak under your radar by the excessively loud, noisy, and overall trashy sounds of this track. If the title "chicks and dicks" angers you... then you're probably not the dancing type, anyway. This album is just great fun. Nice, peppy music to get you started on a night out, or something to dance to beside some stranger you wanna-do-do-after-dark.

White Trash Goodtime Blast!, July 10, 2003
This review is from: D-D-Don't Stop the Best (Audio CD)
Seemingly rank amateurs, Junior Senior manage to pull off quite a feat. They distill the varied history of frenetic dance rock into a singular, minimal blast of frantic goodtime unlike anything else since maybe Disco Tex and his Sexolettes. Punk, Mersey-beat, Motown, disco, old school rap, glam, sci-fi new wave - it's all good to these guys. Next, they add a personal dynamic that's even weirder than Jack and Meg's brother/sister/husband/wife shtick: Senior's big and gay; Junior's little and not. Senior seems to be hung up on Junior, and Junior seems to be, well, very horny and confused. Or maybe it's just the fact that Junior's English syntax would have to actually improve to be as quirky as ABBA's. The wonderful bonus live version of the monster hit and brilliant Chic homage "Move Your Feet" suggests that Junior Senior could actually develop into something truly special. For now, however, I'm perfectly swayed by this trashy little gem's inspirational verse: "We wanna be like Nancy and Lee/we wanna sing like K-k-kim and Marvin/we wanna wear the same as Sonny and Cher/and show we got b---s like the New York Dolls/...even if I got money I'd still be white thrash -- yeah!"
