Book Description

2008
In 1994, Aaron Elson conducted a series of interviews with D-Day veterans. Later, he interviewed several more. This collection of seven interviews on 11 CDs features paratrooper Ed Boccafogli, a veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division; Sgt. Vincent "Mike" McKinney, a 1st Infantry Division veteran who was one of the first, if not the first, American to land in the first was on Omaha Beach; Chuck Hurlbut, a member of the 299th Combat Engineer Battalion; Corporal Bill Pirone of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment; Coast Guard veteran Lou Putnoky, and Exercise Tiger survivors Angelo Crapanzano and Patsy Giacchi. These interviews go far beyond the Normandy landings, and show both the dark and the light sides of war.

5.0 out of 5 stars A completely unique experience, July 11, 2011

I thoroughly enjoyed these CDs. They are like nothing I've had the pleasure of listening to before. The interviewer, who speaks just enough to keep the conversation going, seems to have a knack for making people comfortable. The veterans whose memories he has recorded willingly relay the funny, mundane, personal, embarrassing, gripping, and terrifying details of their involvement in WWII.

I have a long drive to work and these taped conversations are perfect for making the time fly. It's as if you are sitting in the kitchen or living room of each person as they tell their individual, unscripted stories. Each recollection is dramatically different from the next. Each offers an enlightening window into the personal histories of these exceptional men. Thank you Mr. Elson for preserving their stories and for allowing us the opportunity to sit with them and listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars History from those who were there, July 1, 2010

Very informative series of interviews with the soldiers themselves. What was it like to hit the beach on D-Day? What would be going through your mind as you descended into the blackness as part of the airborne drop, with the German tracers reaching up for you?

It is really interesting to hear the veterans tell about their experiences in these informal interviews. The interviewer, Aaron Elson, does a good job of getting the stories down on tape without getting in the way.

I recommend this product to anyone who is interested in WWII history.
