Hailing from Austin Texas White Denim has won the best live act at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival so many times that they promoters ought to shamed into giving them the old trophy and start again. They are an unlikely band with a bespectacled and rather nerdy bass player Steve Terebecki who appears to find it increasingly impossible to keep his shirt on during photos. They equally draw upon a range of musical influences that are utterly eclectic. Their new album "D" sees them build on the wonders of "Fits" classics like "Regina Holding Hands" and `Mirrored and Reverse" and at last deliver that all round great album which they have threatened for so long.

"D" is a set of tracks, which for musical detectives will provide hours of fun. From this album you will detect a dizzying range of classic rock influences with some Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Allman Brothers, The Mothers of Invention, Gentle Giant and even Yes thrown into the mix. This is mingled and stirred into a great original stew and ends up in an intoxicating set of songs that the band describe as "Southern Prog". Listen to "Anvil Everything" and you will understand. From that point you should move next to the joint track "Burnished' and "Back at the farm" which starts with an evil riff and builds into the type of jam that Garcia, Lesh and Co could only achieve live with the use of mind expanding substances. The twin guitar attack of James Petralli and Austin Jenkins brew up an old style jam freak out which will be one of the best things to grace your beat up old stereo this year. "River to consider" alternatively starts off with the best flute this side of Ian Anderson that takes a jazzy detour that almost turns into the Bueno Vista Social Club. The lovely "Street Joy" slows it down for a while with a floating pop ballad but it all picks back up for the fantastic "Bess Street" with the epic syncopated drumming of Josh Block at its tremendous best particularly at 2.30 minutes when the songs rev's up a gear. And of course just to round it off the band produce "Keys" a country song that no doubt Willie Nelson is recording as we speak.

From the first minute of the euphoric rush of opener "Its him" to swirling bass of "Drug", the psychedelic blues of "Is and Is and Is" you will recognise an album that certainly pays respect to past masters but which sounds completely timeless in its on right. "D" is an album which manages to great fun and musically remarkable at the same time, a totally winning combination in anyone's book.

rock twist; where guitars & melodies are fluid, flying sparkle-shots of rolling, rhythmic sound.
You'll hear bits of 70s prog, psychedelic rock, Southern country, jazzy explorations, etc.--all
fused into an eclectic mix of unexpected directions and virtuoso musicianship. Like a combina-
tion of Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Marshall Tucker & Creedence Clearwater Revival together in
a mixing bowl smacked by a quirky spatula. Former members of Parque Torche, Peach Train.

In recent years new bands considered progressive rock like the Mars Volta generally have a cold, acute sound that is hard to get behind unless you're just into wacky guitar playing. The progressive rock side of White Denim seems to turn away from the post-punk doodling and bring a more organic and warm sense into what the band has dubbed "Southern Prog".
While bridging the gap between hippie jamming to Southern Rock to Radiohead Spaciness back to the prog rock guitar work of Yes, King Crimson and Frank Zappa, White Denim's newest album D has the swing of 60's San Francisco rock fused with a contemporary rock groove that is both classic and futuristic.
A lot is happening on this album. A lot of influences and rhythms rolling and tumbling through flute flourishes, jazz interludes, running guitar riffs and reverb panned vocals, but all in all it keeps a very down to earth feel. Haunting ballads like "Street Joy" and acoustic country tunes like "Keys" keep everything grounded and intact.
D has made the top 50 of 2011 lists of many magazines and music blogs and White Denim keeps winning the Best Live Act award at Austin's South By Southwest seemingly year after year. Let's hope things keep happening for them.
In a perfect world White Denim would be the "next big thing". With so many influences in their music and surprisingly timeless songcrafting, it's hard for there not to be something for everyone here. Although White Denim may not ultimately bury the Beiber's and Gaga's of the world and single handedly save rock and roll, you'll definitely be hearing more of them in the future.
