Book Description

8 and up3 and up
This unique, interactive alphabet-art book provides hours of fun as children (and grown-ups, too) learn to draw everything from alligators to zebras, clowns to xylophones.
The step-by-step instructions teach kids of all ages how to draw a wide variety of objects and creatures. Bright, colorful illustrations and easy-to-follow directions make it easy for children to draw things they never imagined they could. Parents will be thrilled with how easily their kids are entertained and kept busy for hours. The book even includes blank pages with letters for young artists to create original doodles of their own!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-5–This combination of alphabet and drawing book will delight kids and teachers alike. From A to Z, Zemke shows how to turn each letter, both upper- and lowercase, into a drawing of something that starts with that sound. For instance, "C" becomes a clown and "c" a crab, and "E" becomes an elephant and "e" an elf. Each doodle is created in about six easy-to-follow steps and all of them use basic shapes that are introduced at the beginning. The resulting cartoons are reminiscent of Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Animals (Little, Brown, 1970). Some of the images turn out better than others. "P" for people is awkward looking, but "p" for pterodactyl works fine. In some cases, the letter is distorted slightly or rotated. Besides the two featured drawings, additional suggestions are presented in the margins. Parents and teachers could use this book to reinforce letters for younger children, while older kids will enjoy doodling just for fun.–Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT

And I speak as an 81 year old who got great kicks from reading and doodling. The little children I've given this book to are devouring it and taking it to bed with them! Keep up the good work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids and adults, July 13, 2006
This review is from: D is for Doodle (Spiral-bound)
This is my first review for Amazon. I felt compelled to write about this book because I find it to be so fun and educational for me and my children. The book uses letters, both upper and lower case, to create pictures that begin with that letter. The letter "m" is my favorite because it uses the whole word "mouse" to create a picture of a mouse. We've been doing a letter a day at our house. I take a sheet of paper and draw a big letter and fill it in with something (for instance today is W day and I filled in the big W to look like a watermelon), then we draw the pictures from this book. Today it was witch and walrus. Most of the drawings are simple enough for my 5 year old to do, and I (a 35 year old) am able to do all of them :) Many of the pages have little side pictures in addition to the main pictures that also use the letters. My only wish for this book would be for more of the letters to include these "extra" pictures, since I have no imagination! Otherwise, a wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oodles of Great Doodles, June 23, 2004

D is for Doodle is full of ingenious, fun and yet simple to draw cartoons. My daughter loves the way Deborah Zemke turns letters and shapes into animals and characters. My daughter loves to try new doodles and D is for Doodle also inspires to make up her own doodle characters.
