I wouldn't part with mine!,

This review is from: D.I.Y. Guitar Repair - Compact Music Guides Series (Compact Reference Library) (Paperback)
That little line from the old Fender ads just popped in my mind! I bought DIY Guitar Repair just a couple of months ago and it really changed the way I work on guitars. It goes deep into the nuts and bolts of pro-guitar setups and repairs, guiding you step-by-step. Since I bought it, I have been working on dozens of guitars, both electric and acoustic, and the results are really amazing. Each and everyone of them did sound and play like never before, including the ones that just came out the store! Bottomline, if you are into professional guitarsetups and repairs, you really can't afford to miss this one.

I was playing a gig one night and a visitor asked me if he could play a couple of songs. I borrowed him my guitar (12-string acoustic) and let him do his thing. Afterwards we started talking and he told me he was amazed that I could play that guitar. I asked him 'how come' and he thought it needed a lot of work to have it play good. He said 'wait', went down to his car and said 'this is what you need' and gave me this little gem. Next day I started reading and then working on my guitar. Now I know what he meant and my guitar plays great. Thanks to him and this book. Just love it. Did my other guitars too and they are all playing great now. So all I can say to all these guitarists, go buy it !

This book focuses mainly on fixing and setting up acoustic guitars. It only mentions electric guitars as a footnote to every section on acoustics. I didn't find it very helpful to me and definitely not what I had hoped it would be. The illustrations were not very detailed either.

I am a Intermediate Guitarist with 5 years under my belt. Seeking deeper knowledge of the hardware and a fire for DIY projects - I spotted this bargain bin book and ordered.
Pros: Excellent descriptions and diagrams. Clear instructions with directions for just about any guitar on the market. Featuring projects for most everything on the guitar. All of my questions were answered. Cons: Although the book promised to be balanced acoustic electric, it leaned towards more acoustic setups. While it did give plenty of detail into both, I walked away feeling that my electric guitar got less improvements. Also, I was first worried that the book was out of date however found all of the information relevant as guitars apparently haven't changed much in 30 years.

This book won't make you a luthier or save you repairs that involved, but for the easy stuff.. set ups, adjustments, etc. it's pretty reliable.

This pint sized book packs alot of punch. A very quick and easy read loaded with practical information. There are great examples of how to make your own tools for repair without having to spend big bucks. A no nonsense get to work kinda book.
