I travel a lot. Some of the problems I've had to deal with include hotels with only wired network access when all I have is my iPad, wireless signals so weak they're unusable, and wanting to read and write files on a USB drive with my iPad. Over the years I've accumulated a collection of devices, each of which claims to solve one piece of this puzzle. The D-Link All-in-One Mobile Companion promises to do it all - and charge my phone too! How well does it work?

First, one has to get past D-Link's usual abominable documentation. Included with the DIR-505 is a "Quick Start" guide which, if you try to follow its instructions to get started, will land you in a hopeless mire. There is a 194-page (!) User Manual on D-Link's web site (go to the DIR-505 page, then the Support tab), not mentioned at all in the Quick Start. This, to be honest, isn't much better. But I think I have some of this figured out.

The DIR-505 is a compact device, maybe twice the dimensions of an iPad charger. It is easily small enough to toss in a briefcase. The AC prongs are North America/Japan standard. It doesn't say in the manual's page of technical specifications, but the unit itself says it will work on 105-240VAC, 50-60Hz, so you can use it internationally with a plug adapter.

On the bottom are an Ethernet jack, a USB jack and a reset button hole. On the side is a WPS button - more on that in a moment. The top has a three-position slide switch and the front (facing you if you plug it in) is a single LED plus some vent slots. Also included is a nice six-foot Ethernet cable, flat and thin.

When you plug it in, the LED turns red until it boots, and then it turns green.

Compact and powerful. This is a fantastic travel router. I have but one complaint, and that is the plug isn't retractable.

I bought this router as a replacement for my old linksys travel router that only supports B/G. That router was great because of its size and the plug was retractable. I never had a problem with that router but wanted the added speed of the N router since I often travel with an Apple TV for movies for my son. The router has one unique feature that I didn't think I would like until I first played with it: the mode switch on the top. I had purchased a TPLink travel router a couple of weeks ago and fought with it when trying to configure it between modes but I believe that was just the function of a crappy product. This router eliminates the hassle by putting a switch on top to choose the mode (router, repeater, hotspot). Once you set the mode the rest is controlled through a simple web interface. The router even supports WiFi Protected Setup for super easy connecting.

Bonus: This thing will charge my iPhone! It doesn't put out enough to charge the iPad but it certainly works for the iPhone, my crackberry and my travel speakers. Of course the USB port is really designed to share out a thumb drive or printer but it also works as a travel charger.

Pros: compact size (half the size of the 1st gen AirPort Express), simple setup, B/G/N compatibility, USB charging, very affordable

Cons: you cannot retract the plug

Overall I am glad I bought this router and it is on my list of required items for travel.

Thus far using the administration portal is fairly easy and this would be a great product if I could get anything to connect to it. I've gone through the quick start guide and the full manual found online, updated the firmware, and tried to set this up numerous times, but I cannot get anything to connect to Wi-Fi Hot Spot set up through this device. Everyone looks great and I can see the SSID, but anytime I attempt to connect from an iMac or iPhone I get a connection timeout after entering the password.

Hopefully I just have a bad unit, but thus far this thing is all potential and no reality for me.

I'm pretty technical, and was looking forward to this when it was first announced by D-Link, as I've used their consumer networking products for a few years now.

Unfortunately, the software and/or the hardware needs serious work, before its ready for prime-time. I tried two different units, with both the original 1.0 firmware, as well as the latest 1.02 release. Beyond the issue that the DIR-505 needs a long time to boot up, most instances when I attempted to connect my iOS devices (iPad, iPhone) or MacBook while a USB hard drive is attached, I'd get a network timeout issue almost every time. When no USB hard drive was connected to the DIR-505, wireless connections were established, but not always.

On the one time I was able to get my iOS devices connected to the DIR-505 while the USB hard drive was plugged into it, I was able to stream three HD movies pretty decently. But given this was the only time I got it to work, I wasn't able to discern how well it worked longer term.

As a stand-alone mini travel router, it's not bad, but I didn't spend too much testing the performance and range to comment definitively.

When trying to use it in Hot Spot mode (wireless Internet pass-through), it rarely maintained a solid connection to my in-home WiFi, let alone allowed me to connect my devices on the wireless LAN consistently.

Too bad. I hope D-Link can resolve the issues, as it's a promising design. Until then, I'd avoid buying unless using it strictly as a portable travel router.
