Product Description

From the Manufacturer

D-Link's PowerLine HD Ethernet Starter Kit (DHP-301) is an ideal solution for connecting computers, HD media players, game consoles, and network attached storage to your home network. By simply attaching one adapter from your router into your existing electrical system*, you can turn every power outlet into a possible network connection.

Expand Your Network Without Running Wires
D-Link's PowerLine HD Ethernet technology extends your network's range without drilling holes into walls by utilizing your home's existing electrical system. This device is also ideal for homes or small offices where concrete walls, successive floors in multi-storied buildings, or other architectural impediments could inhibit a wireless signal. Connect multiple devices in the farthest corners of your home by attaching a switch or wireless access point to a D-Link PowerLine HD Ethernet Adapter*.

Conveniently Connect
D-Link's PowerLine HD Ethernet Adapter transmits data reliably by intelligently adapting to the strongest signal channels. In addition to a maximum throughput rate of 200 Mbps**, D-Link's PowerLine HD Ethernet Adapters include a built-in Quality-of-Service (QoS) engine that prioritizes data packets in order to enhance HD video and audio streaming, intense online gaming, and VoIP calling. Plus, D-Link's Powerline HD Ethernet Adapters implement 3DES encryption for securing your connection to help keep your data safe from intruders.

With hassle-free plug & play installation, D-Link's PowerLine HD Ethernet Starter Kit (DHP-301) is an ideal solution to create a wall-to-wall home network.

What This Product Does
D-Link's PowerLine HD Ethernet Starter Kit (DHP-301) takes advantage of your home's existing electrical wiring* to create or extend a network. Turn every power outlet into a possible network connection to connect computers, digital media players, and game consoles throughout your house.

What's in the Box
Two PowerLine HD Ethernet adapters, two Ethernet cables, one quick installation guide, CD-ROM with Installation Wizard and product documentation

*Power outlets and electrical wiring must all be part of the same electrical system. Additional PowerLine HD Ethernet adapters are required to add new devices to the network.
**Maximum throughput based on theoretical data rate. Actual data throughput will vary. Network conditions and environmental factors, including volume of network traffic, and network overhead, lower actual throughput rate.

Only 11-20 Mbps in my home December 27, 2006
By A. Wu
I was hoping to get at least 30 Mbps from my office to my living room (to stream HDTV, etc). I couldn't find any reviews for the D-Link version of Powerline HD but saw PC Mag and CNET reviews of the Netgear version. They were getting 45-53 Mbps in their test labs (theoretical max is 200Mbps). The D-Link kit was $60 cheaper so I decided to give it a try since I've had decent luck with other D-Link gear.

I have a 30 year old home so it's far from ideal test lab conditions. In my best case scenario where I plug the two adapters in consecutive outlets (8 feet apart), I get 48Mbps (avg). If I connect the adapters to the same circuit (i.e. outlets sharing the same circuit breaker), I get 20Mbps (avg). If I connect across two different circuits, I get 11Mbps (avg). Since HD streaming needs a solid 20Mbps, this won't meet my primary objective. However, it could extend my wireless broadband connection (5Mbps) if I choose to keep it. I may try out the Netgear version but I really doubt it would perform any better for me.

Pros:

-Very easy setup (adapters find each other in 15 sec)

-Kit comes with ethernet cables

Cons:

-Only 11-20Mbps (or 1.4-2.5 MB/s) in my home

-Adapters run pretty warm

Tips:

-Don't plug into any kind of surge protector or multi-outlet

-Connect the adapters on the same electrical circuit for max throughput

Better range than the old 14Mbps units, which is why I bought them. I can now get network to all parts of my 3 story house, even across circuits, with no problem. I only get about 15-20Mbps, though, even when on the same circuit. But at least they are consistent and are really fast compared to the 14Mbps units (which really only got about 1-5Mbps, tops).

I am a Mac-only house, and these units only come with Windows software. That, and the speed issues give this a 4 star rating instead of 5. Oh, and you can't yet buy these units separately. I only needed 3 but had to buy 2 sets of 2. Grr.
--
UPDATE: It is now May 9, about 2 months after I bought 4 of these. As of last night, none of them work any more. None. If it were only one, I would chalk it up to a single bad unit, but it looks like this problem is very common. I would reduce my rating to 1 star if I could at this point. STAY AWAY FROM THESE UNITS AT ALL COSTS!!

Not only is this a disappointing product, but the worst customer service experience I have ever had. After a little configuration trouble, the DHP-301 worked great...for about 3 weeks. Then one of the units just stopped working entirely. Based on other comments I have read on various sites, this seems to be a common problem with this product. So since I was past the 30 days, I had to send it back to D-Link. When I got the second set, it worked fine again...but only for 2 weeks.

So I called D-Link and told them I had given up on the DHP-301 and wanted an entirely different product. They took down the model number of the new product I wanted and said that as soon as they received the defective units they would send me the different product I wanted. But...after they received the defective units they:
1) send me yet a 3rd set of the DHP-301s after I told them I did not want another set
2) tell me the only way to get it sent back is to talk to tech support and have them diagnose this 3rd set (that I don't event want!)
3) say they have no record of my request for a different product
4) charge me $189.99 for one of the defective DHP-301s

So now I have a product I don't want and which I've paid for twice. I'm thinking about reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. I doubt that will make any difference, but this is the worst experience I've ever had with a manufacturer. I had some issues with a Belkin product a while ago, but they were very responsive and provided me a replacement product with no problems whatsoever.

I ended up buying the Linksys Powerline AV units and they've been great. I know someone with the Netgear equivalent and has been very happy with that as well.

Bottom line is: avoid D-Link products at all costs.
