Works on my network with win XP Pro and Win 98SE,
By Perry (CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: D-Link DP-301P+ 10/100TX 1-Centronic Port Print Server (Personal Computers)
Works fine. set up three of them on my network. 3 XP Pro computes computers and one running Win 98SE. Need to change the defauld IP addresss on each additional DP-301P+ after you use the default ip address for the first one (using the web browser to access the units ). For win 98 you have to go read the manual on the CD (a .PDF file) for installing on win 98, and ME ect..and run the included software to install the print client for the network. On win XP all you have to do is set the IP address, look at the port name in the configuration screen, and then use the win XP "install printer wizard" using the ip addrss and port name per the instructions.. I.E. the guy below who could not install it using ME apparantly did not read the Manusl on the CD for specific instructions for installing on a Win 98, or ME computer ..nor did he run the software needed to make it work on Win 98 or ME.

Shares printers wireless/wired reliably. Not for digital pix,

This review is from: D-Link DP-301P+ 10/100TX 1-Centronic Port Print Server (Personal Computers)
Got this on sale cheap and put several printers onto wired ports on my Linksys WRT54G home WLAN. The quick-start info is all you need for setup. Works ok under Win XP Pro & Linux Fedora 3 provided printer is powered on before you need it; otherwise an incomplete file is sent and you get pages of garbage from Postscript printers at least. Windows gives useless feedback on print failures, so be prepared for frustration. Note: this has a Centronics-type connector not USB, so is slow for big (digital camera) files. But fine for text and Web graphics.

I set up everthing according to the Quick install. All setting is correct but i still could not print. I call Technical support,on hold for 20 minuts then told me he was not the right support agent. Back in the loop i go . wait for 30 more minutes 2nd agent told me the same thing. Don't waste your time calling thier support. if it work out of the box great if not return it don't waste ur life like i did.

Works Nicely Once Set-up - But Not Easy to Set Up,
By Redmond Family "RF" (Redmond, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: D-Link DP-301P+ 10/100TX 1-Centronic Port Print Server (Personal Computers)
I almost gave this unit 4 stars, but in thinking about it, it's still new on my network (2 days and has not yet stood the test of time) and the installation was not very easy.
This is nice hardware, but set-up is not intuitive and you have to adapt and improvise. It helps to be tech savvy (as other reviewers have pointed out.) My first tip is that if you're on a machine with XP, go with the PS Admin program first to do most of your initial set up there. This windows app lets you talk right to the print server over your network without messing with or resetting your computer's IP (as they indicate in the quick set-up.) Using this app, you can immediately give the d-link an IP address in line with your own network and router. Then you can call it from a browser. Adding it as a local printer, creating a TCP/IP port, etc, as the quick start indicated, never worked for me. Instead, after I gave it an IP in the PS Admin app, added it to my workgroup, and then was able to add it is a network printer connecting using the direct address of the \\printserver\printer\ - then installed printer's driver and we were off and printing. It is really nice to share the printer without having to leave a computer on to share it.

Lack the hardware reset button,
By Tsung (East Brunswick, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: D-Link DP-301P+ 10/100TX 1-Centronic Port Print Server (Personal Computers)
It lacks a hardware RESET button. Maybe I should give it a four star, because you may not need it at all. For example, if you set a password, and then forget it, it will never ever be recovered, and you cannot change its configuration forever. And it is an expensive unit (about $60).

D-LINK DP-301p+ FANTATSTIC DEVICE,

This item works really well. I have 4 pc's at my home, and they all are networked. With this D-link device, I am able to print from any PC, wired or wireless. This Dlink print server was very simple to install, and i would recommend it to anybody. The only drawback with this device is that it doesnt have a reset button, so when you first configure this device, MAKE SURE YOU REMEMBER ITS IP ADDRESS AND PASSWORD, if you gave it one. THANKS AMAZON!!

Works great, but some knowledge of IP addressing is helpful,

This review is from: D-Link DP-301P+ 10/100TX 1-Centronic Port Print Server (Personal Computers)
I purchased this print server and a new wireless router when my old combo wireless router/print server died. I installed the wireless router first, then added the printer. It was up and running in less than 15 minutes. However, I am familiar with network protocols and addressing schemes, and I can see where those without such knowledge might have problems.
The default IP address for this device is 192.168.0.1, and all computers on your network must share that IP scheme to use the printer connected to this print server. In my experience, most routers (wireless or wired) use a default IP address of 192.168.1.1, so the IP address for the print server will need to be changed. Note the next-to-last number in the IP address is pre-set to zero; it must match that of the existing network (in my example, the number 1). The included instructions guide you to accessing the print server device - a few hoops to jump through but once you're there you can easily change the default IP address and you'll be able to access it directly in the future. Be sure to follow the directions exactly when creating the new printer port on your computer, particularly where you have to define the LPR Queue name. Others have referenced the list of compatible printers; here is a link to that list: [...] I have a Lexmark E series and it is working just fine. My network consists of WinXP and Win2000 machines.

Excellent Compact Print Server,
This review is from: D-Link DP-301P+ 10/100TX 1-Centronic Port Print Server (Personal Computers)
The D-Link DP-301P Print Server is an excellent product. This my second purchase of this product and it is reliable, compact, fast, and easy to set-up, with flexible options, especially in IP addressing. Very useful to get new life out of older printers with the Centronic/parallel only interface adding them to your network untethered to a computer. I have used this product for over two years, completly trouble free on my HP Deskjet printer. I purchased the second device when I was able to get a excellent deal on an older HP Laserjet 6P printer, and it installed flawlessly, and works with both XP and Vista. The documentation is excellent and easy to follow, making the install a simple process. I highly recommend this product.

Poor Installation Guide,
This review is from: D-Link DP-301P+ 10/100TX 1-Centronic Port Print Server (Personal Computers)
The installation guide did not include Vista instructions. I could communicate with the device or the internet, but not both. After 2 hours of fiddling with IP addresses and adding/deleting printer drivers over and over, I finally needed to call tech support. They were patient and got to the bottom of the issue. Now the device works. Overall, it seems to be a good product, but the installation guide could use some work.

Comes preconfigured with a private ip address. Upon changing the units' address to match my home network it locked up and became unuseable. I sent it back. Poor product. I might add that I make my living configuring networks. This is a poor product, period.
