Product Description

D-Link, an industry leader in networking, introduces the DSL-G604T, a Wireless ADSL router modem combining both an ADSL modem and 802.11g wireless router in one unit, bringing high-speed wireless Internet connection to a home or office. The DSL-G604T uses ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) technology for Internet connection speeds of up to 150x faster than dial-up, while using a standard phone line. Using 802.11g wireless technology, Wi-Fi enabled computers and devices can wirelessly connect to the DSL-G604T and share a connection to the Internet. With four additional Ethernet LAN ports, you can connect your network Ethernet-enabled devices.

I just got one of these and for the most part it worked just fine. Mr. Fleming's rating of 1 star doesn't make sense to me since he is blaming the D-Link for his ISP's inability to tell him what their setup is. The DSL-G604T has a *lot* of configuration options so I'm sure it could have been configured to work if the people at the ISP knew anything at all.

Pros:

Nice compact design which replaced two of my boxes (Speedstream DSL modem & D-Link DI-614+) with one. The DSL-G604T is actually smaller than my original DI-614+ alone. The upright stand helps save more space.

Many many configuration options which can allow you to set it up in many different ways. This is also somewhat of a con as explained below.

Setup was mostly easy for me and I got two wired PCs and one wireless PC using a D-Link wireless network card with WEP working in a few minutes. Getting my Thinkpad T40 wireless working took some work though (See below).

Cons:

Documentation is not so great and there are many features that are simply not in the help files or manual so it's not really clear what they are for. Basically, if it's not in the doc, don't mess with it.

The myriad of features is both a pro and con. The sheer number of configuration settings and the way they are arranged can be confusing to some one not familiar with networking or the DLink user interface. However to a sysadmin or some one who is experienced and needs that level of control it is a plus.

IBM T40 Wireless Debug: The only part that gave me trouble was getting my IBM Thinkpad T40 wireless to work with the DSL-G604T. I am not sure, but I am inclined to believe it's actually a problem with the Intel PRO Wireless 2100 drivers.

I purchased this product and set it up and 2 days later it stopped working. I was not able to ping the unit and D-Link tech support told me to send it back. Amazon promptly shipped me a second unit. I was unable to set up WEP security on the second unit (I never got that far with the first one) and once again D-Link tech support decided the product was bad. An hour later, it stopped responding and could not be pinged - just like the first one.

To add insult to injury, I received a follow up email from D-Link tech support recommending that I return the unit and reminding me that they, of course, are not responsible for any shipping or restocking fees.

I finally purchased a Westell unit from my DSL provider and have had no problems with it.

I'm done with D-Link products.

I bought this a few weeks ago but got it from Singapore. The Router works as intended and haven't had problems so far.

My only concern is that this costs more than double in Amazon than what I paid for it in Singapore. Got it for about US$ 60 with tax in Singapore. Surely freight can't be that expensive??

How anyone can sell a wireless networking product in this day & age without clear guidelines on setting up security is beyond me.

If you care about security at all be aware that the documentation included with product will not help you set it up. I'm MCP & CompTIA A+ certified & after three+ hours I'm still scratching my head.
