DSM-750 Exceeded My Expectations,
By
This review is from: D-Link DSM-750 Wireless HD Dualband Draft 802.11n Media Center Extender (Personal Computers)
I purchased the DSM-750 a few weeks after it debuted. It was shipped in it's factory box through another vendor **MALL... The box was slightly damaged, but all the parts were there and in new condition. I plugged it directly in and it auto-detected my router and my Windows Vista Premium 64bit PC. I connected with Windows Media Center and started to stream high-definition movies. My old DSM-320 videos, a collection of 500 GB of TV shows and movies, played perfectly too. I had access to my database of 5000 MP3s as well.
I really think that D-Link outdid themselves this time with the DSM-750. I see that a lot of customers gave this 1/5 stars, but my unit came fully functional, and not only satisfied but exceeded my expectations. I am glad that I waited 6 months for this product to come out. I would recommend this device for any Vista user with a Hi-Definition Television. It pairs perfectly with my Samsung 4661. I no longer use the 360 as a media extender/streamer with my DSM-750.

This was posted on another forum conscerning this product. I am wondering if the units still being sold are the new REV, or the old?
My name is Mark Espenschied and I am a Marketing Communications Manager for D-Link Systems, Inc. in Fountain Valley, California. A small number of early production DSM-750 Wireless N HD Media Center Extenders have an issue with a corrupted security certificate, which results in the communication error messages described in this post when trying to affiliate the DSM-750 with a PC running Windows Media Center. Unfortunately, this defect cannot be rectified through firmware upgrade, and can only be addressed by a factory-trained technician. If you receive the communication error while attempting to affiliate the DSM-750 with Windows Media Center, please call D-Link technical support at 888-900-3939, Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm PST. This a special number which will allow you to directly reach appropriate technical support agents. They will assess the issue and determine if your unit needs to be replaced. D-Link is ready to quickly resolve this issue; tech support agents have been briefed and customers will be shipped replacement units if needed. I want you to know that we are very excited about the DSM-750 and we recognize that you are among our most valued and technically-savvy customers. We have addressed this issue in all new DSM-750 units. D-Link greatly values our customers and we apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

The first batch is defective by design and needs a hardware fix.,

The first batch of this product was shipped defective by design from DLINK. Unfortunatelly there is no firmware fix and the product needs to be returned to DLINK for a hardware fix.
I got mine with the problem and even level 3 support from DLINK could not fix the problem, the product needs to go back. Everybody that got the product from the first batch from Amazon had the same problem. Curiously, customers that ordered from DLINK directly received good units. I would recommend that you wait a little bit before ordering, or order directly from DLINK to get the good ones.

Having previously purchased the Linksys DMA-2200 MCE with DVD player (and returning the worthless piece of garbage) my hopes were not high for this product. I'm happy to say the product works as advertised. Setup was quick, performance is very good, and build quality is excellent. I'm using a Dlink dual band router and connecting wirelessly at 5ghz with very little signal trouble. For a perfect connection I would suggest going wired, but for my purposes wireless is working fine. My intention is to replace my Tivo since I can now perform all the same functions plus more with no recurring fees. The rest of my family is adapting to the Media Center technology after the false start with the Linksys product.
I would say not to let the early bad reviews put you off this device. Avoid the Linksys and buy the Dlink. You will have a much better experience.

They are still shipping defective units,
This review is from: D-Link DSM-750 Wireless HD Dualband Draft 802.11n Media Center Extender (Personal Computers)
It's 3/22/09 and I thought I'd take a chance as amazon was 30$ cheaper than ordering from Dlink directly, but I received one of the defective units. It will not connect to windows media center so I am going to have to ship it back to dlink for repair/replacement. I think that dlink ought to offer free shipment for this. I'm supprised that defective units are still being shipped.
My reveiw of other features like medialounge: 1.) will not seek, FF/RW or time seek for mkv files 2.) will not time seek for HD wmv files 3.) will not stream HD mkv files through the wireless n connection 5 feet away from a Linksys WRT610n dual band router. 4.) Does not calculate bitrate and file size for mkv files correctly resulting in premature ending of the video. 5.) GUI is decent 6.) remote is pretty good 7.) I would not recommend buying this unit from amazon unless they can assure you that the unit is known not defective. They should have gone through the process of contacting dlink and returning the units that needed replacement already, I am very disappointed.

I purchased to pair with the DIR-655 router and the DAP-1522 bridge (the bridge isn't really necessary unless you want your wireless network to include non-N band devices). Of the three, this is the only device that I set up that didn't lead to murderous rage. It works great in Medialounge mode (if you want to stream files from multiple computers, set up something like Tversity to act as a media server - this device will detect it) and with Vista Media Center. One caveat - in order to get live tv to record properly, I had to update drivers for my tv tuner. If you get a video error message, you probably have a codec conflict with MCE - uninstall codec packs and video-related software until the problem is fixed - may need to restart computer to notice a change).
In MCE mode, you can access Netflix watch now and download Netflix movies by using the VMC plug-in. Works great. In medialounge mode, I was able to get the device to play .vob files by using DVDshrink to copy a dvd. I wanted to stream directly from an optical drive, but it's not quite able to do it. It will detect the files and try to play them, but I've only been able to get a couple video frames and a little audio. The only problem is that I needed to update the firmware. At the time I was using a wireless connection (not sure if the same problem would have occurred if connected via Ethernet), and it wouldn't connect to the internet and check for firmware. I had to download the firmware on my PC, transfer it to a usb device, and connect the usb device to the DSM-750. Note - you will need to unpack the downloaded file, and all files need to be included on the usb, not just the firmware file. After plugging in the usb device, I went to medialounge mode. Don't go to the usb selection. Go to settings, and the device will automatically detect the new firmware and prompt you to install. I believe the folder with the firmware files may need to be on the root of the usb. After updating the firmware, the connection problem was resolved.

I'm not sure why others are having issues but I did not. I admit I am a technical person, but I did not find this technically complex. I plugged in an HDMI cord and connected it to my AV receiver, powered it all up, went through the set up menu and had it working in 5 minutes.
Now that said, I did try and call their tech support about sound options and found it painful. First person I couldn't understand and ended up getting disconnected. Second try I got disconnected again. In total I was on the phone with them for 2 hours and they seemed to have no idea what I was talking about. But like I said. It works.

Only 50% working - Does not work in MCE mode.,

Waited long for this product to be released... the unit looks great and the User interface is simple and nicely layed out.. The unit does work in media lounge mode using windows media player 11 to share your content, however, as of right now, it does not work as a MCE Extender...
Dlink support is horrible, you get overseas call center that knows nothing of the product, and when you ask to be transferred to escalated tech support, you get disconnected or dead air... Until they can address this problem with not being able to be used as a media center extender which is the other half of the product, there will be overwhelming returns. Tech support advises to return unit and get a different one.. You might go thru 10 units and have none work as an extender. Looks like alot of others are getting the same problem as the first user commented. Maybe there will be a firmware to fix the problem, but then who knows when.

Works as described,

This review is from: D-Link DSM-750 Wireless HD Dualband Draft 802.11n Media Center Extender (Personal Computers)
It's too bad that the early batches of this device were defective - mine didn't have the previously-mentioned Media Center issues. I ordered it from Amazon and it works great as a stand-alone media streaming device and as a Media Center extender. I primarily use mine as an extender, and I have no complaints about that feature. It connected easily to my wireless N network, and I'm able to wirelessly stream hi-def content to the device.
The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the included remote control. While it is easy to use and comfortable, it does not offer any kind of "universal" functionality that allows you to control your TV's power, volume, or mute. Therefore, you'll be swapping at least 2 remote controls when using the DSM-750.

My media extender works great with Vista Ultimate Windows Center. When the DSM-750 was first released by D-Link it had some issues where people were not able to connect to their pcs. The problem had been fixed before I received mine in the mail. I have not had any issues and have been satisfied with the purchase.
