5.0 out of 5 stars Not Hard to Install and No more Wires
NO MORE WIRES! I love the fact that I don't need to mess with more wires behind my computer to add it to my network. The Install went by so fast I forgot I did it, and the performance is more than what I need it for. I did look around, and I saw the best reviews for this product for it's price. It was a simple decision to make. I recommend this to anyone who wants to...

I bought the D-Link DWL-500 and tried to install in my new Dell Dimension 4400 running XP. Initial instalation went okay but subsequently was unable to re-boot...got blue screen of death specifying IRQ conflict with card in. If I removed card, computer would boot, but would freeze if I pushed the card in. Called D-Link support who told me to call motherboard manufacturer. Tried removing other cards (modem, sound card) to see if I could get DWL card to work, hoping then to reinstall others, but no luck. De-installed all software/hardware. Still get a system error message on re-boot! I have seen others say they used DWL with XP but I haven't been able to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trouble-Free Installation Performs as Stated, March 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: D-Link DWL-500 11Mb Wireless LAN PCI Network Card (Personal Computers)
As soon as I purchased enough wireless products to set-up my own network I wanted it up and running ASAP. D-Link provides more than enough documentation with this, and the other wireless products I purchased, to make installation as trouble-free as possible. Once up and running the connection was (and still is) solid and stable.

I was Pleasently surprised at how easy it was to make this all work. I would and have recommended D-Link wireless products to all of my computer savvy friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its Promise and Performs Great, March 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: D-Link DWL-500 11Mb Wireless LAN PCI Network Card (Personal Computers)
I bought one of these (Wireless PCI NIC)for my computer upstairs along with an Access Point because I was hesitent on drilling holes in my walls and running Ethernet Cable.

To say the least I am pleasently suprised. The installation was without hassle and it performs like it says it should. I have Cable Access and I just plug this into my switch/firewall and it braodcasts the signal upstairs. I get Very Good signal strength and I don't see a difference in connection speeds to the Internet from the computer with the wireless connection to the computers hard wired.

I would buy another in a heartbeat, but first I need another computer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not All Compatible, September 15, 2001

I had a scare installing this adapter. After I installed the two drivers, upon rebooting Windows would not load up properly with the card inplace. I email tech support; however, they were not much help. The solutions they gave me where the steps I have already done.

It seems my Compaq desktop with Windows98SE does not load up properly with the card inside. My solution: pop out the card before I turn on the machine. After win load up to desktop, pop back in the card. The connections works fine consider I have a 1-bed room house. Infact, the wireless connection gave me a boost on my speed. Strange as it may sound.

This is a clear example of not all machines work 100% I have no regrets in getting into wireless. Note: Dlink came out with a wireless Lan card for Pocket PC. DCF-650W. This card works great. You can pick one up at Dlink.com and review their specs.

1.0 out of 5 stars An old and neglected product, January 29, 2003
This review is from: D-Link DWL-500 11Mb Wireless LAN PCI Network Card (Personal Computers)
I have used this card (PCI adapter and PCMIA card) with win 98 and had no real problems except for a weak reception, but it thought that had something to do with the fact that its an old pc
which probably causes a lot of electromagnetic interference.
Changing to a newer Pc, i decided to use win XP. The drivers for
XP, do not really work properly. You can't boot up the system.
Ok so we start again, with win2000 this time. Everything seemed to work fine. Allthough uninstalling previous installation of the
drivers is near impossible. Żour have to mess around in the registry (don't like that). Nervertheless it seemed to work, then I noticed that the connection was interupted (eventhough it says it has a strong signal) after about 5 min.. After a reboot of the PC or the gateway it worked again. Funny so i try to reinstall the drivers and to my horror now windows wont boot up (as xp did) with the cards in the pc.
This is not good enough.... If i can make decent drivers for win98 then I could do the same for 2000 or XP right.

4.0 out of 5 stars I bought them despite poor reviews..., February 27, 2002

I bought a pair of DWL-500 and an SMC7004AWBR router over the weekend. I put DWL-500 on both Windows ME and XP with little difficulties. I did have fairly loaded systems so it took me a while to free an IRQ on the system running XP. After that, it was only a matter of installing drivers, PCI card, and then it's all done. Installation on ME was only a series of reboots due to the architecture of ME. Both systems perform well so far; I haven't experienced any reset or interruptions. I am pretty satisfied with

2.0 out of 5 stars Focus on the specific card not the technology, July 31, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: D-Link DWL-500 11Mb Wireless LAN PCI Network Card (Personal Computers)
I agree with most reviewers that wireless technology is fantastically liberating, particularly in the house when you don't want to drill holes. I also agree it's easy to set up. I've tried three different manufacturers products and they're all pretty easy to configure. However just because the technology in general is great doesn't mean this specific card is, relative to it's peers. In my house this D-Link card gets very low to non-existant signal. A computer next to it, with a Lucent Orinoco card gets full signal. I've tried moving them around and the Lucent consistently out-performs the D-Link. If you have an open plan room for your installation then no problem the D-Link works just fine, but if there are a few walls in the way, then buyer beware, not all cards are created equal.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Signal, October 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: D-Link DWL-500 11Mb Wireless LAN PCI Network Card (Personal Computers)
I just purchaced this product yesterday. Installation went well(both with the DWL-500 and DWl-120). I have yet to get a signal through even though i have been trying for over a day now. This might not be the best product for the novice user unless you are buying the access point with it.
