Product Description

The first of the Green Ethernet products the DGS-1016D provides 3 key benefits to end users through its cutting edge innovative technology. Computers do not require Internet access all the time; neither do switches utilize all ports at all times. When a computer or network equipment is shutdown, switches often remain on and continue to consume considerable amount of power. With Green Ethernet technology, D-Link switches can automatically detect link status and reduce power usage of ports that are idle. Computers or any connecting parties set to standby mode (not power off), however, will not provide significant power savings.

The first of the Green Ethernet products the DGS-1016D provides 3 key benefits to end users through its cutting edge innovative technology
  • Reduces power consumption & creates less heat
  • Extended product life
  • Reduces Operating Costs

Power Savings by Number of Connected Ports and Link Status
Computers do not require Internet access all the time; neither do switches utilize all ports at all times. When a computer or network equipment is shutdown, switches often remain on and continue to consume considerable amount of power. With Green Ethernet technology, D-Link switches can automatically detect link status and reduce power usage of ports that are idle. Computers or any connecting parties set to standby mode (not power off), however, will not provide significant power savings.

Power Savings by Cable Length
The Green Ethernet switches have the ability to analyze the length of any Ethernet cable connected to them for adjustment of power usage accordingly. Shorter lengths require less power.

Overall Power Savings Per Day
For a traditional switch, power consumption remains constant even when the ports are not in use. In a standard workday scenario where PCs are used for 10 hours a day and powered off 14 hours a day, and connected to the switch using 20 meter cables, D-Link's Green Ethernet can save up to 20%* power used for each system.

Note: Switch uses switching power adapter. The cable length which PCs are connected to switch is 20m cables.

Get the blazing speed of Gigabit Ethernet with the D-Link GigaExpress DGS-1016D, an 16-port 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Switch that delivers power, performance, and reliability in one cost-effective, space-saving design. Increase the speed of your network server and backbone connections, or make Gigabit to the desktop a reality.

Power users in the office, workgroup, or creative production environment can now move large, bandwidth-intensive files faster. Transfer graphics, CGI, CAD, or multimedia files across the network instantly. The versatile and compact 1RU height design of the DGS-1016D enables the device to be rackmounted in a standard 19 inch rack, while conserving valuable rack space.

Power-Packed
It features a non-blocking switching architecture that filters and forwards packets at full wire-speed for maximum throughput. An 8K MAC address table provides scalability for even the largest networks. Address learning and aging, 802.3x Flow Control for full-duplex mode, and back pressure flow control for half-duplex mode alleviates traffic congestion and ensures reliable data transmission.

Designed using industry standards, it is compatible with virtually all 10, 100, and 1000Mbps Ethernet devices and other vendor equipment. The D-Link DGS-1016D 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Switch protects your existing network investments while providing you with a straightforward migration path to faster Gigabit speeds.

Easy to use
The auto features of this gigabit switch make installation plug and play and hassle-free. No configuring is required. Auto MDI/MDI-X crossover on all ports eliminate the need for crossover cables or uplink ports. Auto-negotiation on each port senses the link speed of a network device (either 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps) and intelligently adjusts for compatibility and optimal performance.

It also features diagnostic LEDs which display status and activity, allowing you to quickly detect and correct problems on the network. Every port also supports a cable diagnostic feature that helps to detect cable related problems.

* Power savings may vary depending on products used. Maximize power savings when compared to a D-Link conventional switch. Uses up to 40% less energy when connected devices are powered down and up to 20% less energy when connected devices are used 10 hours and powered down 14 hours over a 24-hour period, when connected via 20 meter Ethernet cables.

Green Ethernet features available on hardware version C1 or later.

I purchased the DSS-16+ to replace 3 hubs I was using for my small office network. After connecting the switch, I couldn't believe how fast my network operated. I gained dedicated bandwith per port and no longer had to share my bandwith with other users. The DSS-16+ has full-duplexing to provide maximum speeds for 10/100 network cards. D-Link provides lifetime warranty so I know I can't go wrong. I question the problems the other guy experienced because this switch alleviated all of my network traffic and gave me the fast performance I seeked. I would definitely recommend the DSS-16+ to my family and friends.

When my home network got too big, I decided to wall mount a Cat6 patch panel and 1gb router (see my other reviews).

This has been working without problems since I installed it in my home network September 2008. After plugging everything in (I don't even know what's on the included CD), I was pleasantly surprised to see that two of our machines (laptops) had 1gb networking.

There are however two things to be aware of:

1) If you wall mount the router like I did, there is not enough clearance behind the unit for the supplied power cable (a normal straight one). Get the slimmest right angle power cable you can find. I needed even a bit more clearance which I achieved by shimming the router away from the face of my 4U wall mount with a few small washers. While not egregious, this was annoying. This could have been easily avoided by the manufacturer, if they had supplied a right angle power cable with the proper clearance.

2) The fan is noisier than any PC or digital device I have in my house. This doesn't matter to me since it is in my basement, but if for some reason it was in habitated space, it would definitely bother me.

So besides the initial clearance problem, I have no qualms.

7/28/10 Update - Product still performs well.

I have had this gigabit switch for around 3 weeks now. It works as desired and setup is, well, trivial. Just remember that this switch is UNMANAGED, so no VLAN's or anything like it.

I was also afraid it would be noisy because of its fan, but it turned out to be very quiet as well. I strongly recommend this product.

By the way, this switch came to replace an old D-Link 10/100 hub that worked almost non-stop for 7 years! I have no doubt of D-Link's quality, at least so far.

Finally, I must say that so far I have no complaints on this product, not even the slightest.

I've outgrown my SMC Barricade router and decided to extend my network with a 16 port gigabit switch. I was originally going to go with the Linksys switch, but the reviews were universally bad and reported failure rates very high. I wanted to take the time to set this up and forget it, and while I've only been in production with it for less than 24 hours, it is working well and set up easily. I think the documentation is pretty clear, but if you're not technical, you'll have a bit of trouble figuring out some of the advanced features.

One feature I liked is that the ports are auto-detecting regarding whether a cable is a crossover or straight through, just like a more expensive switch. You can't manage this switch by forcing the the ports into a configured state (auto detect vs. or manually configured), but that would have been overkill for me.

My setup is an Apple Time Capsule (version 1) as my router and wireless. I'm using a straight-through cable to connect the D-Link switch to the Time Capsule, both of which are gigabit.

If this is the type of setup you're thinking of installing, this D-Link switch appears to be the perfect fit. I can only hope the reliability is better than the Linksys, but according to all the user reviews I've read during my research, this is the preferable unit.

Hope this helps!

NOTE: I'm revising this review after using the switch for several months now. Absolutely no problems, even though I've made changes to my network. The only thing I'd add to my original review is that the fan on the switch is a bit noisy. If you want this to be located in your office, be aware that the fan is always on and is audible. Other than that observation, I would still recommend this switch.

If you are looking for a reliable, quality switch, look elsewhere. The first switch we received was DOA. Tech support turn around was more than a week, and they ship UPS ground. As a result, we had to rely on an old hub for over two weeks! The new switch worked well, for about two weeks. Then it too failed. If you need a reliable workgroup switch, look somewhere else. We gave up and replaced ours with a Bay Networks Netgear FS516 switch for about the same money and we can rest easy with good support. So far it hasn't broken either.

I picked up a DSS 16+ switch and it definitely improved our network of 14 computers. We were using the two uplinks. I purchased the system in January and it has a 3 year warranty.
Yesterday, it died completely. We lost all our ports. You cannot get through D-Link tech support by phone, and e-mail has been slow to get an RMA.
In retrospect, I think the slightly more expensive Link-Sys switches may be manufactured with better quality control.
