I had initially purchased the DIR-857 right at launch to replace my aging DGL-4500 gaming router. The DGL-4500 is a champ but the wireless range is awful for my 3600 sq ft home, so I decided to give the new top tier dlink router a try. Installation was somewhat clunky due to known issues, but a firmware update resolved the majority of the problems. After 24 hours, I was impressed with the wired and wireless speeds, functionality and of course, incredible wireless range. Sadly, a constant issue came up that couldn't be resolved - both wired and wireless devices would intermittently lose connection for a matter of minutes.

Unfortunately, my family started complaining that they couldn't get online right away, that it would take 15 minutes before they had a connection. I shrugged it off as user error at first as I extensively use my PC for work and would have noticed if their was a connection drop (my VPN would have died and alerted me). Then when browsing mail from my iPhone late at night, I was getting no internet access. I was connected to the network, there was just no internet access. This happened again and again and I soon found it was not only intermittent, but also random - it wouldn't affect all devices at once, just some. This made it quite clear that it was not user error and my family was indeed having issues.

I had the router set up correctly, practically identical to my DGL-4500 setup. I first tried the dlink forum where they had me try all the basics such as reserving DHCP for listed devices and practically disable every feature to find the culprit. I tried everything and it got to the point where they wanted me to try asking my neighbors if I could hook my router up to their setup for 24 to 48 hours to see if they had the issue.

I purchased this router to replase a DIR-601. My old router worked wonderfully; however, the range was not as great after I moved office location. I have always had a great user experience with D-Link products; therefore, I chose this router over the new Netgear R6300 even though the later has the new 802.11ac draft technology. I am not a fan of Netgear after having one that always dropped the signal. A couple of friends also currently use Netgear routers and they have to reboot it daily (that was my experience for a hole month and, thus, my switch to D-Link which I never had to reboot it since installation).

After finding out that D-link had this new router and after reading many reviews on the DIR-857, it was a no brainer decision. The features that sold me on it was the guest network (which the Netgear supposely has, but it was not included in the current firmware), the 3.0 USB port to connect an external hard drive (the R6300 only has a regular port), and the size/look. The only con I see is that it cannot be hung on the wall, but for me it is not a real issue to have it on a desk or table.

Setting up the internet connection was not as easy as explained in the program to install the router, but it is not difficult at all to go around it (even though the drop-down list had my ISP as an option). I checked the D-Link forum and found a post on how to solve the issue. Another way is to just call you ISP and get the DNS settings directly from them and manually enter the info and you are set to go. It is noteworthy to mention that I am not an IT guy nor I fully know how networks are set up, but can follow instructions. I just know the basics.

After that issue, programing the actual network was a breeze. Setting up the external hard drive was also instant.

(Updated Review)

After what I am sure was some type of firmware or hardware failure, my replacement DIR-857 is up and running flawlessly. I'll give it five stars when the firmware is working better.

I upgraded to Firmware version 1.01 (released about 2 days before this review update) before setting up the router. The speed is incredible, but there are still some issues, which I'm sure will be addressed with future firmware updates:

1) The SD and USB port streams movies flawlessly. I wasn't able to get a USB hard drive (Western Digital) to work, but my 16 GB USB stick worked very well. I was able to access the USB stick remotely through the internet (non-LAN connection) using the Admin account. I was unsuccessful in creating another user account, so for now, the admin account must be used to log into the "YourIP:8181" port. My Windows 7 machine could not map the USB Drive or SD Card to upload any files. I had to do it a single file at a time through the http connection - Or just load it and then plug it into the router.

2) A reboot is needed after EVERY CHANGE to the firmware. You can make multiple changes, and then reboot, but if you get logged out automatically due to a "time out", all your changes are lost. I recommend making changes on each page, and then rebooting - Especially when you're reserving IP addresses for devices on your network.
I'm in the process of setting up QOS for various applications and have managed to get IP addressed reserved for all my devices. I'll update more as I play with it. Overall, very satisfied.

(Original Review)

I really wanted this router to work, but it falls flat on it's face.
