Overall, a great product if you have a need for it.
W. L. Holder
It can not only connect to existing access points using those methods and frequencies, but it will itself serve as an access point with the same.

Device description by D-Link COULD have been a bit more honest.

Pros:
+ a/b/g/n/ac on simultaneous 2.4 and 5GHz
+ Share network access with up to five devices
+ 4000maH battery that can charge a tablet
+ Can share an Ethernet connection
+ Guest mode
+ Multiple wireless profiles
+ DLNA server for media
+ Will power USB hard drives
Cons:
- Limited configuration
- No repeater mode
- Typical D-Link flakiness

I admit it, I'm a sucker for travel routers. The DIR-510L is, let's see, the sixth I've had, though I'm counting an ancient 3COM 802.11b router. In the D-Link line, I have the DIR-505 and DIR-506L - see my reviews of those. I also have two by TP-Link and one from ADATA. None of these have met all my needs, though the two D-Link models were usable after a few firmware updates. D-Link churns out new models regularly, often making minor revisions to an existing model (for example, DIR-505L vs. DIR-505), and then ending firmware fixes once a new model comes out. D-Link is also often a bit slow to release proper documentation, which sadly is the case with the DIR-510L. (Documentation eventually found - see edits and comments below.) But let's see what we have here.

The DIR-510L is a portable travel router that includes a hefty 4000maH lithium-polymer battery that will power the router as well as a USB-powered external device. There are two USB ports on the DIR-510L, one is marked .5A (for phones), the other is marked 1A for tablets.

I have numerous portable routers, repeaters and access points now (most with reviews up). D-Link is trying to bridge together more than a few features in one device and has done so very well. This also adds the newer AC band for improved speed but you need your devices and network to support it or just plan on the more common 5Ghz speeds. Let's dig into each capability they brought together into one device.

As a travel router it meets the needs for the entry to all but the heaviest needs person. You can connect the device to the hotel/public network via the Ethernet on the bottom of the D-Link or via wifi. There is also the ability to use a 3G USB modem plugged into the side. I was able to test all three (keeping in mind I was lucky to have a supported 3G USB modem. See their website for updated lists). The wall plus is included to operate the router and charge the internal battery. You can also operate in the batter mode. The length of usage depends on how much usage the device is getting to be honest. I had varying results.

The admin interface on the router was quite simple and as other reviewers pointed out, a cool feature is the profiles where you can save multiple configurations for connectivity. For example, you visit a few hotel chains regularly (or even a coffee shop) and can easily switch the router to work between them.

The power switch on the top has three modes, so pay attention to which one you selected before getting frustrated. I realized I had selected charge mode instead of on once. As a side note you will need it in charge mode for charging tablets, but the other USB port can charge a phone and act as a router at the same time.

The side USB ports serve a few purposes.

Pros:
-Share internet with up to 5 wifi devices simultaneously
-Dual-band performance (2.4GHz and 5GHz)
-Easy start-up, connection setting, and interface
-Highly portable; wifi router can work on its own battery

Cons:
-Although the company recommends up to 5 wifi devices, I found that 4 devices was the limit without the device failing. Connecting 5 devices made the DIR-510L restart automatically, or fail and then make me restart it.
-Can only work as either wifi router OR charger at any one time.
-"Secure network connection" is only valid between the router and the device; router to internet is not secure. A solution for this is to use a virtual private network (VPN) to "secure" internet connection (or at least more secure than non-VPN connection).

Overall, my new favorite portable wifi router. Highly recommended.

Connection is easy, though you have to follow a series of steps correctly or you will have issues with connecting. What worked for me was as follows:
-Charge the battery overnight.
-Keep plugged in, and power up DIR-510L. You will see that the unit will either work as a battery charger OR a portable wifi router.
-Wait one minute, and then you will see the SSIDs DIR510L (for 2.4GHz) and DIR510L_5GHz (for 5GHz). Select either one to connect.
-Open a web browser, and type in "http://192.168.0.1" in the address bar (without the quotes)
-At the login screen, leave the password field blank (ie. no password)
-At the home screen page, you can change the admin security settings for logging in to the router configuration interface. It is highly recommended that you create a password with a minimum of six characters to keep your router secure.
