Product Description

Product Description

The D-Link Wireless N 300 Gigabit Router (DIR-651) comes equipped with 4 Gigabit ports to provide speeds up to 10x faster than standard 10/100 ports. It also uses 802.11n technology with multiple intelligent antennas to maximize the speed and range of your wireless signal to significantly outperform 802.11g devices. With the addition of Intelligent Quality of Service (QoS), data streams are separated which helps organize and prioritize your network traffic so your video streaming, gaming, and VoIP calls run smoother over both your wired and wireless network. With some routers, all wired and wireless traffic, including VoIP, Video Streaming, Online Gaming, and Web browsing are mixed together into a single data stream. By handling data this way, applications like video streaming could pause or delay. With the D-Link Intelligent QoS Technology, wired and wireless traffic are analyzed and separated into multiple data streams.

1. The software included with this product is not Mac-compatible.

2. Maximum wireless signal rate derived from IEEE Standard 802.11 specifications. Actual data throughput will vary. Network conditions and environmental factors, including volume of network traffic, buildings materials and construction, and network overhead, lower actual data throughput rate. Environmental factors will adversely affect wireless signal range. Wireless range and speed rates are D-Link RELATIVE performance measurements based on the wireless range and speed rates of a standard Wireless G product from D-Link. Maximum throughput based on D-Link Wireless N devices.

3. Computer must adhere to Microsoft's recommended System Requirements.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The D-Link DIR 651 Wireless N Router is one of the new releases of consumer routers from D-Link. The only major upgrade on this unit is the gigabit Ethernet port (-vs- high-speed from previous model, the DIR 615). It does NOT have an active USB SharePort(tm) for attaching USB devices (external HD, shared printer, etc).

The router administration for this DIR-651 is almost identical to the DIR-655 (my current wireless router for 2+ years, and currently my yardstick for wireless routers). A few minor changes, but overall the same features, functions, and controls. I configured the device manually (without the disk installer) via web browser, changed the Router IP address, range, and other settings. It took less a bit over 15 minutes to complete the setup from unboxing to having a functional wireless router. Using the disk took a bit longer (a little over 20 minutes), but it got me to nearly the same state as my manual configuration, plus a few minor tweaks on the router setting. The disk setup is user-friendly, and works properly for setting up the router.

Data transfer when hard-wired (using Cat 5e network cables) were nearly identical to the DIR-655, and data transfer speeds were relatively fast. I won't get into this too much more.

As a stand-alone wireless router, I was a bit disappointed with its out-of-the-box functionality (or lack thereof). One major drawback was the ineffective/lackluster QoS service for bandwidth prioritization. Network traffic seems arbitrary, whether it be VoIP or movie streaming. Another major negative was that it consistently dropped wireless connection, even though the signal strength indicates a strong connection between router and laptop.

Thank you for the feedback. We're glad to hear that after you upgraded the firmware, a majority of the issues had been addressed.
The current available DIR-651 in the market is shipped with this new firmware (Version 1.10) and should address the concerns you mentioned. This would include your connection challenges. We'd urge anyone having this connectivity issue to upgrade the unit's firmware.
We're sorry that you are still experiencing network storage access issues. Can you tell us what you're experiencing? D-Link strives to help customers enjoy their routers, so please let us know.
So you know, the DIR-651 is a step-up to the DIR-615 with Gigabit Ethernet Port support. For intelligent QoS and Shareport USB features, the suggested D-Link routers are the DIR-645, DIR-655 or DIR-657.

Thank you very much,
D-Link.

After going round and round with AT&T's Netgear 7550 wireless DSL gateway, I finally gave up in disgust and decided to buy a separate DSL modem and a wireless-N router. I took a chance on this router because of the mention of extended range on the box, the low price, positive past experience with D-Link products, and the seeming simplicity of the unit. I'm glad I did.

Two different Netgear routers had ethernet problems that caused me to be unable to print consistently. I'm no longer having any ethernet problems, and the the D-Link has gigabit ports.

The Netgears were unable to keep a consistent connection with my son's Macbook a mere 40 feet away, though the previous 2-Wire router had no problem. With the D-Link, his wireless connection has been fast and flawless. Everything connected to the wireless LAN quickly and effortlessly.

The setup software is Windows only, and the manual suggests the manual setup method for Mac and Linux. Manual setup was a breeze. I'm fairly savvy about these setups from considerable past experience. I knew that I had to set the DSL modem to bridge mode for the router to handle PPPoE connections, and the only problem is that the modem documentation gave no instructions. My son found the information online, and everything proceeded quickly after that.

If you're not a techie type, the browser-operated router control panel is extremely complex and comprehensive, but the basics are readily accessible and clearly laid out. Most major functions have a setup wizard. I needed no written documentation because the built-in help is very, very clear and detailed. Just about every aspect of control possible to the router is there and easy to find.

I needed NAT router, Gigabit LAN connectivity and Wireless-N. Since I didn't need any other fancy features (USB Disk, Printer server etc) I thought D-LINK DIR-651 was a good choice. But after a few days of use I totally regret. It constantly drops the signal right in front of the router. It's not the signal strength but some kind of incompatibility with firmware because it works fine again after rebooting the router.

I contacted D-Link support, and their answer was to inquire the maker of my device. I was using with iPad3. So they blame Apple?

Another WiFi device at work, which my coworker bought, had a very similar problem. I told him "Don't tell me you bought a D-link?", and it was a D-link indeed, different model though. I KNEW IT!

So, I decided I will not buy them until they fix the QA, QC process.

UPDATE
======

I noticed there was a firmware updated in Mar, 2012. Hmmm I shouldn't have given a harsh comment? To pay a respect to D-Link, I downloaded the version 1.11, and saved current config, flashed the firmware, restore config....let's see if my issue is resolved. This time, it can't even connect! Checked the log, it failed at authentication (not a password problem). I did factory reset and configured to use Wifi-G only, WPA/WPA2 TKIP/AES etc etc but still it can't establish connection.. Finally I reverted to 1.10 firmware, and now things are back to normal, and of course my issues not resolved. Thanks, D-Link. Wasted another hour.
