I like this little gem. I had a PCI wireless card for my desktop that was several years old and no longer supported by the manufacturer. I needed to upgrade, but I wanted a USB wireless adapter this time around. I wanted to get it out from the bottom of my desk so I could a better signal. I had certain requirements for my new purchase. It couldn't cost any more than $45. It had to be USB. And it had to have some sort of USB extention cable or cradle. It had to be reviewed by Windows Vista users. It also had to have excellent reception. I don't have a big house, but there were a lot of walls and electronics near and in between the Access Point and my computer.

After searching I found the DLink Wireless G adapater fit the bill. I picked it up for $30 (at least $10 less than local stores). All of the reviews talked about great reception, even indepent review sites. And it had the USB craddle I was looking for. I bought it and got free shipping along with it! What a Deal!

I've had this little gem installed for about one month now, I coudn't be happier. It gets great reception. This adapter runs absolutely great with Vista. I am also using the included connection software and it plays very well with Vista.

The only downside is the optional craddle. It requires either a direct computer USB port, or a powered USB hub with an external power supply. It draws more mA than a non-powered hub can handle (at least it did on mine). I had to use the power supply on my USB hub to get the craddle to work. This is the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

I highly recommend this product. You will not be disappointed.

This is the second D-Link WUA-1340 g USB adapter I have purchased. I was looking for a cheap, USB network adapter that I could use for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and 8.10, and also for use with my Windows XP/Ubuntu dual-boot desktop computers. I am using WEP with my Qwest DSL with a 2-Wire (2700-HG-D) gateway/router/wireless access point. The only thing easier than the Windows installation was the Unbuntu one. It worked, out of the box, without any special configuration. I am not sure if this USB NIC uses different chipsets among model numbers and revisions, but the two devices I have work without a hitch. The range so far seems good to excellent, and I have not experienced any wireless dropouts while doing several large downloads simultaneously (uTorrent, KTorrent and other regular downloads). The exention cable definately make the reception range better, and the stand that the NIC plugs into seems very sturdy. Like many NICs, it does get warm to the touch, which is why it is vented. I am using it with my Dell, Optixplex GX280 and with two generic Ubuntu media servers I built from scratch with P4 Intel motherboards. Hope this helps readers, especially those people who are looking for Linux-friendly, USB network cards.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reliable wireless adapter, February 16, 2009
This review is from: D-Link Wireless G USB 2.0 Adapter 802.11g, 54Mbps (Personal Computers)
I've been using this adapter for over a year without issues. The best thing about it is that is comes with a USB 2.0 cradle that allows you to put the adapter anywhere the cable will reach so you can position it for the best signal. The included software works fine but is redundant if you are running Vista which has generic drivers that will run the adapter perfectly fine without having to install additional software.

In answer to some common questions about this router that I read in other reviews or comments on reviews:

1. You don't need to match brands between wireless routers and adapters. Any G-band wireless router can send a signal to any G-band receiver or adapter. You can mix-n-match Linksys, D-link, Buffalo, Netgear, etc. products as much as you like.

2. The adapter works perfectly with Windows Vista, including Vista 64-bit as long as you have SP1 installed (Service Pack 1).

3. The USB cable is not very long but you can get an extension cable very inexpensively. Here is a good option: USB 2.0 Extension Cable.

4. The range of this adapter will vary greatly depending on where your wireless router is located and how many walls it needs to send its signal through to reach the location of your computer. Your mileage will certainly vary, but this adapter is better than most I've used and gets a nice strong signal from one side of my house to the other.

Overall this D-Link adapter is a great option if you want a USB option instead of a PCI card. It's worked well for over a year and I'm satisfied with it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate, inexpensive, but Mac OSX users should expect to work for it, March 20, 2009
This review is from: D-Link Wireless G USB 2.0 Adapter 802.11g, 54Mbps (Personal Computers)
The D-Link WUA-1340 USB wireless adapter is advertised to work with Mac OSX, but it is packaged with drivers and instructions only for Windows. D-Link has a Mac OSX driver available for download on their web site, but it's buggy. (Among other things, WEP network passwords must be entered in hexadecimal.)

It turns out, however, that the electronics within the WUA-1340 are made by Ralink, and they have a newer, better driver for the Mac. To find it, find the Ralink Technology web site and download the Macintosh driver for the RT257x/RT2671.

Even this didn't work perfectly for me. In a multi-user environment it only works out of the box for the system administrator. To make it work for standard users, I had to set the setuid bit on the USBWirelessUtility executable in the /Applications/USBWirelessUtility.app/Contents/MacOS directory, and I also had to add AwakeRalinkUI to the login items for each user.

After all that, I'm now very happy with the wireless connection it gives me to my home network. The price was also right. If you're a Mac OSX user, however, you'll have to work for these benefits.

I used to buy only Linksys products, until I installed 64 bit Edition of Vista... At the date of purchase, Lynksys did not have Vista 64 bit drivers much less Linux compatibility....So I give this inexpensive D Link a try..

COMPLETE SATISFACTION FOR ME:

Also I wanted to have and adapter that could work out of the box for Linux and it does the job. D Link has many products Linux compatible.

My selection of Oses: Vista Ultimate 64 bit, Ubuntu 64 bit (OUT OF THE BOX); XP Professional 32 Bit

the exteriors casing is a little bulky and cheaper made plastic than the old Zydas adaptor i bought for $10 but i mean its a usb wifi adapter and it gets the job done. I AM USING THIS ON MY MAC. Scouring the internet and amazon to find a standard usb wifi adapter for mac is like a needle in a hay stack! this works great along with the free drivers I downloaded from Ralink

This review is from: D-Link Wireless G USB 2.0 Adapter 802.11g, 54Mbps (Personal Computers)
About two weeks ago I received the D-Link Wireless G USB 2.o adapter 802.11g, 54Mbps from Amazon.com after returning a $100 wireless card back to Dell. I wasted 5 hours on the Dell card even though Dell said it was compatible with my Dell computer - wrong! I figured I had nothing to lose by trying a $29 adapter at this point.

Well, believe me, this is worth every penny and more. I installed it and was surfing the internet in under 5 minutes. I live in a bi-level home with the router downstairs and the D-Link on a computer upstairs and about one room over. The D-Link immediately picked up the signal and hasn't dropped once. Even though the signal reading varies between good and excellent, the actual connection is perfect. To test it further, I went into Netflix and connected to one of their movies. Again, the streaming was flawless. I am very happy with the purchase. I will update this review after a few months of use.

This review is from: D-Link Wireless G USB 2.0 Adapter 802.11g, 54Mbps (Personal Computers)
I purchased the D-Link wireless G USB to replace a bad wireless card on a friends Gateway laptop with Win Vista. The install was easy and seamless. The connection setup was just as simple. At times the signal strength would read low but the connection speed was low even though other laptops in the area were reading very good. But I must say unless you were watching the signal strength you would not have noticed. I would buy this product again without hesitation.
