Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have been through a number of wireless routers over the past decade or more, everything from the A/Bs to the Gs and multiple instantiations of the Ns. I, originally, started with Linksys routers, but have strayed on multiple occasions due to perceived quality issues.

My recent experience routers includes the Netgear RangeMax (very stable and reliable router) and the recent Linksys EA4500 (again stable and reliable with an increase in wireless speed). The D-Link has a somewhat unique form factor - cylindrical tower (I am noting a trend to fewer blinking Leds on the newer routers).

My review of the D-Link Wireless-N600 will highlight some of the differences from the Linksys EA4500 when I see them.

Setup: installation took roughly 5-10 minutes, essentially plug and play, no CDs to load drivers from or software. My extended setup (the whole network: 2nd desktop, netbooks, Wii, XBox, Roku, smartphones, wireless printer, 1TB USB storage device added as network storage) took an additional 30-45 minutes, for an overall install/setup time of a little less than 1 hour. The only troubleshooting necessary was a simple reboot if the router did not connect immediately after configuration. This is very comparable to the Linksys EA4500.

Network Speed: I ran the numbers from Speedtest.net, having tried multiple sites in the past with a wide range of variance between sites. I ran both desktops and a remote netbook (trying to stretch the limits by moving to the backyard in an effort to promote a weak connection and dropped packets - the router is positioned on the second floor of a 2500 sqft house near the front, so the signal traversed most of the house through a floor and multiple walls, including stucco).

Upload speeds all ranged from 2.5 to 2.

OK.
I purchased this router a few weeks ago, based on the fact that it had "cloud" capabilities.
Not being a skilled network administrator, I read through everything, and it looked simple enough. I got it installed, worked, and allowed me to access the internet no problem. I had WPA2-PSK configured on both bands. I then plugged in my free agent, desktop hard drive, and began working through to set up access. I couldn't however find anything specific to do so, so I sent in a support request.
No response. I got an automated response, with a case #, but no one ever got back to me. I waited a few days, nothing. So, I sent another. Received another case number. Still no response.
by this point, I'm really irritated, thinking-- Seriously?! Are you kidding?
I looked for another email contact. I found sales, and emailed them with a full explanation, begging them not to reroute me to tech support, explaining why.

I finally called them earlier today, and was immediately told-- go talk with the drive's manufacturer. So, I did.... not really being skilled at this IT stuff, I figured that perhaps there's something I just don't know about this stuff, so ok.
I talked with SeaGate's tech support via chat, and they were confused by it too. THere's nothing required, it's plug'n'play.
So, I call DLink, ask for customer service, and was immediately forwarded to "level 3" tech support-- great guy.
The axe is then dropped.
1- this does not work for any other OS than Android, IOS, IPhone, IPad, and Intel-Mac.
2- the router cannot use any drive larger than 500gb.
So, of course that means my drive is too large, AND I'm using the wrong os's.

As others have stated, the wifi continually disconnects and reconnects. I also get several errors in the syslog. Do yourself a favor and visit their forums, as many other people are experiencing this issue. I was using my old Linksys router and it was completely reliable...when I switched...everything started going wrong...

The router arrived in good condition. I was unable to get it up and running, it is not "plug and pray".
Calling the help desk was a challenge, with a string of selections to make and guess what, when you talk to a live person you are in the wrong dept. and get dropped and have to start again.
Third try I got through to a service desk after refusing to give credit card number as it was a new purchase. The guy spoke passable English and had to take over my computer to get it up and running.
The unit works ok but keeps dropping the wi fi signal, I got a new improved modem from my cable company. It made no difference, it still drops the signal. It's out of warranty, their rates are prohibitive so I will live with it until I can afford to replace it.
The help desk is a pain in the posterior and seems to be a profit center for the company.
Would I buy another D-Link product or recommend them, NO!

I thought I would try this since I have been using a DIR-655 for sometime and was happy with it, but wanted dual band. Well, for me, this was not a good choice, at least right now. The main problem I had was getting a stable wireless signal. Streaming video from my home network was total frustration. Every 10 minutes or so, the video would freeze and then start again after 5-30 seconds. This happened on both bands, tried everything I knew, fixed channels, auto select, various encription settings, reboot, reset, etc., nothing would give me a stable signal. There are no firmware upgrades to try either. I gave up after 4 days of playing around. The interesting thing was that the signal strength did show full strength on all divices, so if Dlink gets around to putting out another 2 or 3 firmware updates, I might reconsider trying it again then, after checking the Dlink Support forums first. I did do this before purchase, but, the product is so new, there were only about a dozen posts. Maybe I just got a bad one, but for now, I will stick with the DIR-655.
