I hunted a long time before I bought this router. I had a D-Link prior to this one and it served well for about 5 years. This one was truly plug and play. The setup was VERY simple, I created the Admin account, selected my security and set a password for it. Of course I did have to re-connect all the wireless devices again, but that is the cost of changing routers. I have had it almost 6 months now, and it has only required one restart, and that was after the cable modem lost signal from the street.
The Range is good and it reaches my basement with a decent signal, but upstairs everything is seeing lots of bars.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Courtesy of the Amazon Vine program, I have received a D-Link DIR-868L AC 1750 Mbps Wireless Router and also its smaller brother DIR-850L (AC 1200 Mbps) for review. Due to the extreme similarity of the two models, I am unifying their reviews into one and I will point out the differences between the two models where relevant.

First and foremost, keep in mind that the major selling point of these routers is their support for the 802.11ac wireless standard. This is the newest incarnation of the IEEE wireless network standard, superseding 802.11b, a, g, and n. Although the routers are backward compatible with these older standards, you really need one of the newest devices that support the 802.11ac standard to appreciate the speed improvement.

Let me describe the exterior of the DIR-868L first. The body is a cylinder about 9 inch tall and 4 inch wide. On the front there are two LED indicators, one for power and the other for cloud access indication. On the back, starting from the top, you get a USB 3.0 port. You can connect a FAT/NTFS formatted harddrive for sharing the multimedia on the drive using the ubiquitous DLNA standard. (It doesn't read Mac Extended formatted harddrives---I tested). Then you find a WPS button for easy wireless setup with other WPS enabled devices. This is followed by 4 gigabit ethernet ports, and the internet up-link port. Underneath these five ports is a toggle power push button, and the power input jack. These are all very standard in modern routers.

The DIR-850L is a bit shorter, at about 6 inch tall. The external configuration is exactly the same as its bigger brother. The only difference is that the USB port appears to be USB 2.0 only.

My DIR-850L (hardware version A1) arrived with 1.05 firmware (Apr/2013). It had trouble getting an IP address from my cable modem (so wouldn't connect to the Internet). However, once I upgraded to the 1.12 firmware (Dec/2014) everything worked just fine. My recommendation if you're UPGRADING to this device from an existing router is to download the latest DIR-850L firmware to your computer BEFORE you shut down your existing router. That way you can power-up the DIR-850L and upgrade the firmware before you ever attempt to go online.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This review is specifically for the D-Link DIR-850L.

I have been through several wireless routers and they all seem to have their strengths and weaknesses. I wanted to set up a second wireless network in my home for testing and for setting up a more segregated configuration. The D-Link DIR-850L is that secondary router for me, and though I have not had it set up very long I have noticed mostly good things about it.

Right out of the box it is configured for secured wireless networking which is a bit unusual from what I have seen. Most routers with which I have worked are set up with the wireless wide open. Having the wireless secured by default is good for a couple of reasons. First, it is ideal for people who do not have the aptitude (or perhaps the desire) to set everything all up and just want it to work with no questions asked. Second, even though setting up secure wireless networking is simple and easy there is a brief window of opportunity that can be exploited if the router is turned on and wireless isn't secured.

Setting up the router is exceptionally easy. D-Link did a very good job of making sure that even the novice can get moving quickly though those that have experience with networking will not feel coddled. The user is greeted by a setup wizard to set the most basic things such as network name and passkey (though it's already set to a default value). With those in place, there's nothing else required to get going on the network.

Aside from the basic setup though, there is a fairly complete interface for setting up all manner of optional features. I especially appreciate the ability to set up DHCP reservations which anymore is fairly standard.

The router is really easy to setup for most of the usual items like PC, Laptop, Smart Phones and iPads.
I discovered that my my Roku 2 xs player could did not connect automatically. Roku 2 player was working excellently with my previous router Linksys E2000. I called up Roku Support to get the problem resolved (Roku works on a channel 11 of the router).
But I still face one problem. I am trying to setup a media server. I am using Twonky Beam. But some how the router is blocking the device discovery. Just to be sure that this is not a software problem or my iPad problem, I installed it on my iphone and same problem exist. Then I tried the Roku remote for iphone (Same media server different software). I am facing the same challenge. My device is not getting discovered over the wifi.

So any one who is looking to buy this product, please consider the above constraint. I will try to connect with the DLINK support (not easy to find a support) for figuring out a solution. If I find a solution, I will update it in my post.

Update 30-Sep-2013
I have returned this item and bought a Netgear AC Router from Costco.
All the above issues have gone. So looks like there something which is blocking the Roku Remote for iPad to cast the channels from iPad.

Hopefully this review helps for people with casting needs.
