I bought these on a lark. I can live without them, but I thought I'd give them a try. I connected one to a lamp in my Family Room, and another to a lamp over my computer in my office.

The set up was pretty easy until I tried updating the firmware. Whether using the Android app (Nexus 5) or the IOS (iPad Air) the firmware update just wouldn't take. I tired using Chat, but it wanted a cookie. I then tired emailing, but that failed to work. I called and spoke to someone in Manila. Hard to understand and after an hour of doing what she said to do, she said I'd need to be elevated. She said I'd get a call the next day. Two days later, I got a call from D-Link. I picked up after two rings, and it hung up. I haven't heard from them since.

As for the usefulness, it works fine controlling those two lamps once the connection has been established. Upon starting the lamp it takes about 20 seconds to connect; not very useful for a on the fly light switch.

It also worked when I was away from my home. I turned on the lamp in my office while across town, and sure enough when I got home it was on. I can see the usefulness when out of town and want to turn on and off lighting to make it appear the home is occupied.

As soon as I can figure out where to put another, I'll order one again...

---Update 5-23-2014----------
The plugs were able to update today. Dlink fixed it after I went to their support forum. I'm mostly satisfied with the plugs now. The lack of web portal functionality and the inability for this thing to figure out DST in your timezone are still some minor issues. But once they are up and going, they've been consistent in operation for the last week and some of the issues with tablet vs Phone android devices have shaken out.

Also, if you notice in the comments of this review, DLink support offered help, but after I filled in the form they gave me, no one followed up with me. I had better luck using the support forum setup for the smartplugs specifically and getting a dlink response to fix the update problem.

Overall some of my problems are probably just because I bought these at release, but there's plenty of functionality in these for just an outlet. as soon as they fix the DST thing and offer web portal functionality instead of the app, it'll be pretty close to 5 star rating.

Bought three of these recently.

The interface is good, but works inconsistently on my different android devices. I can see that they want to make this more like the NEST learning thermostat, but there's a lot of bugs in the android app. I don't think the plugs themselves are the problem since the cloud portal seems to connect to them no problem. I guess this is one issue being an early adopter.

When I first got the plugs, I plugged them in and fired up the app on my phone(HTC one M8). weirdly, it let me setup the plug, but refused to let me register for a new DLINK cloud account and there's no way to register outside the app.

I was really unhappy with this product due to I could not create an account through the app, which was the only possible way to create one. Also when I connected the device to the app it would only work for a short time. All of this has now been remedied with their new patch/update with their app and the firmware for the device has also been updated, but beware this will cause the device to reset so make sure you aren't using anything sensitive like a computer as the power will abruptly be turned off with no warning. For everything else the app and device now work flawlessly. It now makes a great addition to my beginning of my home automatic project.

Also i would like to say that if you submit a ticket for a problem you will get a fast response even though I wasn't able to receive help because the updates remedied all the problems people were reporting, I was extremely grateful that I receive a quick and courteous response.

Thanks D-Link for the updates!

This plug is awesome. Works great. Has great tech support (if needed). I didn't know that my TV and stereo used over 30W of power when the devices are off and over 400 when they are on. By programming off and on times I'm saving a lot of energy that I didn't know I was wasting. Glad I bought it.

Style Name: Smart Plug + Thermal Protection Verified Purchase
This plug is fantastic!! Awesome price for the features, which includes Watt usage and scheduling. Known software bug with iOS APP but Carlos agent# AR004279 resolved my issue - great technical support. D-Link has discontinued their smart plug app in favor of mydlink home app which in turn doesn't appear to be support new plugs well at the current version: 2.0.2. PIN INCORRECT is the error you may receive but there is a workaround.

HERE IS THE FIX:
Download the "Smart Plug" app from D-Link Corporation (being discontinued). Follow the steps to add your plug. When you get to the WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) you will want to chose manual setup (using WPS will not work). Using manual setup follow the steps to complete the process. Once it has been successfully added, update firmware if prompted. If you haven't created a mydlink home account, you will need to create one and sign in on the "Smart Plug" app. If you sign in on the " Smart Plug" app, it will update to dlink.com so that you may use the latest "mydlink Home" app from D-Link Corporation and have your plug added without any further configuration. That's it! You will want to sign into the "mydlink Home" app if it doesn't make you and you'll find your plug awaits you. If you don't see it, you may have already been signed in. Just sign out and then sign in again. You may need to update the firmware again on the new app but it is automated, no biggie.

If you ever mess up and need to reset your plug to factory defaults, HOLD WPS button for 12 seconds, light turns red, RELEASE button.
