Product Description

Control Your Devices From Anywhere

Meet the mydlink Wi-Fi Smart Plug (DSP-W215). It allows you to turn your devices on or off, wherever you are.

Create On/Off Schedules For Your Devices

Your devices should work for you whenever you want them to, right? We agree -- and that’s why we made the Smart Plug. You can set device schedules so that you walk into a brightly-lit home every day after work with your favorite song playing and the AC exactly where you want it.

Your Life Can Be A Lot Easier With The Smart Plug

Turn things on and off from your smartphone or tablet using the mobile app. The app is easy to use and it'll send you customized notifications. Be the first to know when it turns a device on or off, when you go over your power consumption limit, or if a device has been automatically deactivated due to overheating.

Let The Smart Plug Worry About The Unexpected

Did you leave the electric blanket plugged in? How about the iron? Hey, don't stress. The Smart Plug has a built-in thermal sensor that will shut off your devices if the plug overheats.

Really Easy Setup

Connect to an existing Wi-Fi network with a simple push of the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button on the Smart Plug and on the router. It's hassle-free and gets you connected in minutes.

Save A Few Bucks On Your Next Energy Bill

Keep an eye on your energy use. Know what each device power consumption is. Monitor air conditioning usage in the summer or heat usage in the winter so you don’t get a surprise at the end of the month.

Features:
  • Turn devices on/off with the mobile app
  • Create on/off schedules for your devices
  • Help prevent your devices from overheating
  • Monitor your energy use

Too bad, I really wanted them to work.

It comes with no real instructions...have to dig though their website to find them because they're not directly linked from the product page.

I am not going to send it back, but will wait a while to see if updates help to get it to perform as it should for its cost.

I bought these on a lark. I can live without them, but I thought I'd give them a try. I connected one to a lamp in my Family Room, and another to a lamp over my computer in my office.

The set up was pretty easy until I tried updating the firmware. Whether using the Android app (Nexus 5) or the IOS (iPad Air) the firmware update just wouldn't take. I tired using Chat, but it wanted a cookie. I then tired emailing, but that failed to work. I called and spoke to someone in Manila. Hard to understand and after an hour of doing what she said to do, she said I'd need to be elevated. She said I'd get a call the next day. Two days later, I got a call from D-Link. I picked up after two rings, and it hung up. I haven't heard from them since.

As for the usefulness, it works fine controlling those two lamps once the connection has been established. Upon starting the lamp it takes about 20 seconds to connect; not very useful for a on the fly light switch.

It also worked when I was away from my home. I turned on the lamp in my office while across town, and sure enough when I got home it was on. I can see the usefulness when out of town and want to turn on and off lighting to make it appear the home is occupied.

As soon as I can figure out where to put another, I'll order one again...

---Update 5-23-2014----------
The plugs were able to update today. Dlink fixed it after I went to their support forum. I'm mostly satisfied with the plugs now. The lack of web portal functionality and the inability for this thing to figure out DST in your timezone are still some minor issues. But once they are up and going, they've been consistent in operation for the last week and some of the issues with tablet vs Phone android devices have shaken out.

Also, if you notice in the comments of this review, DLink support offered help, but after I filled in the form they gave me, no one followed up with me. I had better luck using the support forum setup for the smartplugs specifically and getting a dlink response to fix the update problem.

Overall some of my problems are probably just because I bought these at release, but there's plenty of functionality in these for just an outlet. as soon as they fix the DST thing and offer web portal functionality instead of the app, it'll be pretty close to 5 star rating.

----------Original Review---------------------
Bought three of these recently.

The interface is good, but works inconsistently on my different android devices. I can see that they want to make this more like the NEST learning thermostat, but there's a lot of bugs in the android app. I don't think the plugs themselves are the problem since the cloud portal seems to connect to them no problem. I guess this is one issue being an early adopter.

When I first got the plugs, I plugged them in and fired up the app on my phone(HTC one M8). weirdly, it let me setup the plug, but refused to let me register for a new DLINK cloud account and there's no way to register outside the app.

Bought elsewhere, but also posting this here because the manufacturer seems to read and respond. Kudos there & to Amazon for this forum:

Pros: Blinking lights up front & on/off switch that turns device on/off.

Cons: Where to begin. No manual, just card with PIN, and GPL license statement.
- First install took almost a day: Finally found iPhone app. & start to setup device. Part way through prompts for Firmware upgrade. After a few percent, the app. times out, and you start all over again. This took hours to complete - why did I waste the time?!?
- Then noticed there was no access outside of home WiFi. I have access OK outside house to my D-Link web-cams with existing account. So maybe I sign in first with app. & then setup device.
- Hit reset button to start over install, but no local network WiFi, wait, finally, the setup on my home WiFi but no luck. Reset dvice again, and quit app., this time it goes through.
- Plug in device, but accidentally hit WPS button (which is disabled on my router -- WPS is bad news for security). Uh, oh, do I have to setup again?!? Nope, do have to unplug device and wait for it to boot.
- Test access outside of my local WiFi and still not luck. Guess this went away?!?
- Finally, access to device is super, super slow via app. No access with myD-link web page either (unlike web cams).
- Suppose to notify you when device turns on - have accepted in iPhone settings, but still throws error in D-link app.

Been slowly accumulating items to make my home more intelligent and smart-phone friendly... so it only makes sense that I start making the lighting in our home smarter as well.

With a four-legged son at home, and occasionally going out when it's light out and returning home after sundown, I've always left one or two floor lamps on for him (even though I suspect he has night vision).

Buying the latest D-Link Wireless Smart Plug, however, gives me much a much more energy-efficient way of keeping the light on for El Dog, but also is useful for when we are out of town and we need to light our home every so often.

Set up was relatively easy...ish.

Although it's nice that each D-Link has apps for various devices, the one thing that would really cement my home's future as a D-Link-ed home, would be the option of having one "universal" app for ALL past/current/future D-Link home products, whether it's this smart plug, the various network cameras, and whatever else they have up their sleeves. At this point, I can't see why I would need the home internet connected to the same app, but who knows... but I really hope someone important is reading my extremely comprehensive and well-thought out review and recommendations, take it too heart, and get my one one app to rule all D-link products. Smeagol concurs.
