5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful manga and anime.
I have to admit that I overlooked DNAngel for the longest time. I'm glad I finally got around to reading it though. It's a great story with sometimes predictable, but usually captivating outcomes. The characters really make this show worth watching though. You can't help but think Daisuke's "romantic" ways are rather cute, We all have to say that With/Wiz is really fuzzy...

I have to admit that I overlooked DNAngel for the longest time. I'm glad I finally got around to reading it though. It's a great story with sometimes predictable, but usually captivating outcomes. The characters really make this show worth watching though. You can't help but think Daisuke's "romantic" ways are rather cute, We all have to say that With/Wiz is really fuzzy and cute (I want one o_o), and many of us girls can't help but love the way Dark's so mysterious, suave, and flirty ^_^ All the characters have something or another likable about them. Even if you have to dig waaaay deep to find it.
It gets you wondering about what really is considered "good" and when it's okay to bend the rules a couple times. (and just how far you'd go to get a date with Dark =P)
Overall, DNAngel is a great story with romance, humor, and wonderfully beautiful bishonen that you begin to wish truly existed in real life... *is thrown out of the room for the bishonen comment*

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! DNAngel is here!, April 9, 2004
This review is from: D.N.Angel, Vol. 1 (Comic)
DNAngel is one of the most highly anticipated series on Tokyopop's large manga line-up, and for very good reason. This is the manga that started the hit anime series; and to be blunt (and just because double negatives amuse me), the anime series ain't got nothin' on the manga.

The story revolves around Daisuke Niwa, your everyday 'normal' kid. That is, he's 'normal' until his fourteenth birthday, in which he then proceeds to turn into the legendary thief Dark, complete with a very cool persona and a nice pair of black wings to boot, everytime he looks at his crush, Risa Harada. Of course, the last thing poor little Daisuke wants to do is live the life of a thief, and the only way to stop this family 'curse' is to make Risa fall in love with him. But that's easier said than done. To top it all off, there's another twist: Daisuke's alter-ego Dark has a crush on Riku Harada...Risa's twin! And when Dark sees HIS crush, he quickly changes right back to Daisuke.

O what a tangled web we weave.

If the cover doesn't give it away, a look into the pages of the manga will...the art is absolutely wonderful. High-quality. Top-notch. The manga-ka has obviously paid painfully detailed attention to every single panel, and the result definitely pays off. The script is also very good, something that I've come to expect from Tokyopop now.

Check out this manga. It's beautiful, it's funny, it has a great plot (which foreshadows more to come), and it's just plain addictive.

I picked up the first two manga about 2 months ago and fell in love immediately. It's a wonderfully written and illustrated series that's funny and serious and absolutely fantastic. Of course, it helps that Dark, Daisuke's other personality, is hot.

Any lover of series such as Furuba (Fruits Basket), Escaflowne, Magic Knights Rayearth, CCS, etc., would love this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute!, May 15, 2005
This review is from: D.N.Angel, Vol. 1 (Comic)
Sometimes when you're in love, you feel like a different person . . . literally. Daisuke Niwa is a middle schooler who just turned fourteen. He confesses his love to his crush, Risa, only to be rejected. He soon turns into his alter-ego, the thief Dark, for the first time. Dark has a crush on Risa's twin sister Riku, and changes back into Daisuke when he sees her. I think it's relevant that Daisuke and Dark have the same DNA, and their crushes are twins, which means they also have the same DNA. But whatever.

I like the characters in "DNAngel". Daisuke is sweet, and Dark is arrogant. I like the twins too. The characters have pretty balanced personalities too.

The story is ok in volume 1, but it gets much better. My rating is based on the entire series, but I think I would give volume 1 a three. The romance later on is sweet and not overly dramatic. There are also new enemies, more magic, and more explanation about the relationship between Daisuke and Dark.

The art in this series is gorgeous. Everything is very detailed, and a lot of emotion is put into it.

"DNAngel" is a great series that gets better with every volume. I definitely recommend giving it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars i wish he was real....., January 30, 2005

So! DN Angel is about Daisuke, an eigth grader (just turned fourteen) who can't seem to have his love requited. Feeling rejected, Daisuke returns home only to realize: 'I love her!'. Shortly after, he transforms into Phantom Thief Dark. Turns out that Dark is in his family genes- and he has to have his love returned to make Dark go away. But in the meantime, whenever Daisuke see's his crush- Risa- he transforms into Dark. The only way to turn Dark back into Daisuke is to have Dark's DNA react to love as well... to Risa's twin sister, Riku!

In my opinion, this book was great! The first volume is mostly the foundation to the story, but some important things happen. What with interfering, violent, genius, and desireable classmates, perhaps more than art will be stolen. I highly suggest reading it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for just about everyone., September 24, 2004

This review is from: D.N.Angel, Vol. 1 (Comic)
This is quite possibly my favorite manga (Japanese comic book) to date. It's about Daisuke Niwa, a boy who, on his 14th birthday, gives a love note to his crush, Risa Harada. Risa rejects him (kindly), and he goes on the rest of the day a bit sad. But then, when he gets home and thinks about Risa, he turns into Dark, a legendary master theif with a crush on Riku, Risa's twin sister! So, Daisuke has to go around, stealing pieces of artwork and trying not to turn into Dark again. To make it worse, one of the other kids from school is a police officer out to put Dark in jail!

It's a great, soap-opera like story with a little fantasy mixed in, and the artwork is amazing. It's also got quite a few funny scenes, mostly involving Daisuke's wacky friends. It's mostly meant for girls, but a few guys might like it too.

Just a note, it's a "PG-13" book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute, June 28, 2004

This review is from: D.N.Angel, Vol. 1 (Comic)
The idea for this story is really cute, and I love the artwork. There could be a little more to the story (most of the time, he's either stealing artwork, or accidentally changing identities). But this is only the first volume in the series, and I expect it to get a lot more interesting.
The book starts out with an introduction of Daisuke's normal school day. You think, 'oh, he's just another ordinary-kid-that-gains-a-power type of hero' until in order to get into the art room, he manages to unlock the door, without the card(It has the type of lock on it where you have to slide the card through, like at hotels). Then, he gets home, opens the door, and gets through a whole bunch of security traps, like lasers, pits, etc. My reaction was 'Woah, he's not really an ordinary kid, is he?'. Then, he turns into Dark (against his will), and steals artwork from museums, which seems to be the family tradition....
Although not the best story I read, it is cute, and I'm looking forward to it getting better in future volumes ^_^

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, October 17, 2004
This review is from: D.N.Angel, Vol. 1 (Comic)
This manga is excellent all the way through. Though it is made for a younger readers I still very much enjoyed it. Daisuke is a very lovable character (I really enjoy the type of characters that grow on people.)The art is well done and it has many elements to it, romance, comedy, fantasy, and a bit of mystery to it. If you do read it and enjoy it, you should look out for the anime that comes out November 9, 2004. I would also recommend: Tsubasa, Hana Kimi, Alice 19th, and Juvenile Orion.

Adapted into yet another hit anime, Yukiru Sugisaki's (Brain Powered, The Candidate for Goddess) popular manga series can now be found on American shelves. On his 14th birthday, young Daisuke discovers he comes from a powerful bloodline. Whenever he fawns for his dream girl, Risa, Daisuke triggers a response in his DNA and transforms into the Phantom Thief Dark, an art thief who has stolen masterpieces from every generation (This character seems to have a lot in common with "Phantom Saint Dark," the hero of Kia Asamiya's Dark Angel). While trying to cope with his new double life, Daisuke discovers that he can change back to his old self when Dark finds his own love interest. But the only way Daisuke can stop changing is if Risa returns his affections-and the girl had already rejected him! So much for there being other fishes in the sea.

Reading from first page to last, while this title has all that is required of a bishonen manga (pretty boys, supernatural powers, same-sex overtones, etc.), fans of the genre may find nothing special here. Basically, if you've read this manga, you've read them all. On the plus side, the comedy and teen angst of the story should keep you reading for a while. Also, this volume features N for Nikishi, Sugisaki's manga short about a young girl and her guardian spirit.

4.0 out of 5 stars D. N. Angel, Dark Angel, September 8, 2005
This review is from: D.N.Angel, Vol. 1 (Comic)
By Karen Jones

D. N. Angel is an excellent read. Daisuke Niwa is the main character he's a middle school student who has a very interesting quirk. Whenever this boy longs for the girl he loves, he transforms into the legendary Phantom Thief Dark. Dark, who is considered suave handsome, is trapped within Daisuke's body, they share it.
Since the day Daisuke Niwa was born he has been trained into the family business, thievery. His mother insists on daily training which consists of picking locks, knowing security systems and how to get around them, and being able to survive traps. All normal for his family. All the males born into the Niwa clan go through the exact same transformation, until the day their loved one, returns the feeling.
It is emotional and fantastic adventures keep you on the edge, wanting to read more and unable to suppress the hunger to read on. Daisuke though, is not alone; there is yet another person who searches for him...
