Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The younger--and equally wacky--sister of Arthur the aardvark stars in these two romps: in the first book, D.W. undertakes her first gymnastics class, while in the second she reluctantly discovers the joys of swimming. Ages 3-7.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 Readers of Brown's ``Arthur Adventure'' series (Joy Street Bks.) are in for a treat. D. W., Arthur's self-assured little sister, is the central character in a new series written for beginning readers. It's D. W.'s first day in gymnastics class, and she knows it all. For D. W., touching toes and skipping in circles is easy, but when she is called upon to do a forward roll, she can't. After a long week of practice, D. W. masters the forward rollonly to discover the new task at hand is the backward roll. Brown's humorous and detailed illustrations are done in watercolors outlined with pen and ink. In this title, however, the colors are not as vivid as in his other books. A simple text combined with expressive drawings make this charming book one that children will enjoy reading. Most future gymnasts will identify with D. W., as this book reinforces the saying ``practice makes perfect.'' Orvella Fields, Indianapolis-Marion County Pub . Lib .

4.0 out of 5 stars Will you flip?, May 31, 2007
This review is from: D.W. Flips! (Board book)
D.W. Flips is a Marc Brown book from the Arthur series.
D.W. goes to a tumbling class but thinks it's for babies. She soon finds out she has a lot to learn, and finally masters flipping. Only to find out there is more to learn. D.W. is a cute character and little girls will love this book about tumbling, and the cute pictures. The lesson is practice makes perfect, but there's always more to learn too.
I think it's a good book for little girls, and too cute.

2.0 out of 5 stars Uninspired., December 4, 2011
This is a story about some undefined creatures -- not sure what they are but they aren't terribly appealing, and the name "D.W." is non sonorous and has a jolting feel that disrupts the story. Despite the book title, there are no flips in the story, only forward and backward rolls, as if the book title was written by someone other than the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flip, Flip, Flip!, November 10, 2006

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
In this early D.W. book, "D.W. Flips!" D.W. is signed up for a gymnastics class. She wants to do really exciting stuff and is upset that she's been placed in a baby class! She soon finds, however, that gymnastics isn't as easy as it sounds.

The illustrations on this early book are different on the Arthur / D.W. books you'll see today. They're more "rough" in a way and have softer-coloring. Nevertheless, they possess a certain charm all their own. D.W. fans in particular won't want to miss this.
