From Children's Software Revue® -- "Subscribe Now!"

The story in this electronic book is one that every family can relate to. D.W., sister of Arthur, is a finicky eater prone to tantrums when served something she doesn't like. After one fuss too many, D.W.'s parents leave her home with the baby-sitter while the rest of the family goes out to eat. Bored at home, D.W. decides to give public dining another try and along the way discovers there's a whole new world of delicious tastes out there- all she needs is an open mind and an open mouth! In typical Living Book fashion, the story text is highlighted as it is read, and the clickables are numerous and enjoyable. The story's five learning games vary in quality, however. The poorest has kids working on their mouse skills as they shoot water at gophers who have invaded a garden. Better are the word games, one of which has children making stories by dragging and dropping pictures and words into place. Another game lets kids replace words in the story with pictures that match them, a nice activity for building early reading skills. Testers all enjoyed the program, at least the first time through. What the CD lacks is novelty- there isn't much to keep kids coming back. Another missing element is music; there are no catchy tunes or sing-alongs as in certain other Living Books like Sheila Rae the Brave. That's an unfortunate omission as preschoolers love to sing along with the characters and will return to such programs time and again to hear the music. Still, the story line is fun and relevant, and the quality of the graphics and narration is high. This would work especially well in a preschool or kindergarten classroom as a vehicle for teaching early reading skills and as a discussion starter for a unit on healthy eating.
Teaches: early reading, word recognition, making sentences

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, September 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: D.W. The Picky Eater (CD-ROM)
We were very disappointed with this game. Its basically a read-along story combined with a few games. My preschoolers were bored with this one right away. I wouldn't recommend it.

I have students with autism who are rather low in ability and some can play this without help. It is fun and easy.
