Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The irrepressible Arthur and his equally high-spirited kid sister star in aardvarkian antics that offer, said PW, "substantial doses of Brown's trademark understated humor and art brimming with witty details." Ages 3-8; 4-8.

About the Author

Marc Brown, who was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1946, received great encouragement and support from his grandmother and uncle. Inspired by the books of Maurice Sendak, Brown decided to pursue his ambition of becoming an illustrator. After receiving a B.F.A. in painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art, he worked as a TV art director, a professor of mechanical drawing, and a freelance illustrator, before becoming a writer. In his books, he addresses the fears and problems which children face and events like friendship, family, school and pets. For his illustrations, Brown uses pencil with watercolor on a variety of papers to achieve different visual effects. The "Arthur" series, about the everyday adventures of a lovable aardvark, began in 1976 and continues to this day with 25 titles published. Brown has also created other series such as the "Rhymes" series, and the nonfiction "Dinosaur" series, which conveys messages of do's and don'ts. These series, like the stories of Arthur, hold the attention of young children while transporting their imaginations on magical journeys. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes Being Small is Okay (A review of D.W. Thinks Big), July 15, 2005
This is a variation of the 'sometimes little is just right' plot.

In this case, DW is feeling bad because she feels left out of her aunt's wedding. Arthur gets to be ring bearer and her cousin Cora gets to be flower girl; both because they are older.

But fear not, DW gets to save the day when Arthur accidentally looses the ring down an air conditioning vent. While Arthur valiantly tries to retrieve the ring, he is just too large. Enter DW, who is just the right size.

As thanks for her saving the day, DW gets to march down the aisle carrying the ring.

Three Stars. Okay story of popular characters. Minus two stars for being a re-hash of similar plots.
