Book Description

A revolution is taking place, being led by a single generation of cameras, the D1! The amazing D1 generation, the D1, D1x and D1H has grabbed photographers’ imaginations and delivered the images professionals have come to expect from their gear. Unlike any previous camera though, digital cameras require more knowledge than just f/stop and shutter speed. It’s that extra knowledge you’ll find in The D1 Generation!

About the Author

B. Moose Peterson is a wildlife photographer who manages to get himself involved in a whole lot more than just wildlife photography! Beginning in 1981, he literally took apart Nikon gear in search of photographic answers to the problems he faced in photographing California’s endangered wildlife. He hasn’t stopped shooting or taking things apart since!

Moose switched to a fulltime digital shooter in June 2000 because of the quality and capabilities he found in the D1. Within a year’s time, he had filed over 40GB of original digital wildlife images captured with the D1, D1x and D1H. It’s this day to day experience of shooting with these cameras and Nikon lenses and accessories that he presents here in The D1 Generation!

David J. Cardinal has been a software developer and photographer for 25 years. With the advent of digital photography David applied his lifelong technical skills as the perfect complement to his passion for wildlife, nature and photography.

His deep knowledge of how digital technology works when applied to photography makes him the ideal author to describe how the D1 family cameras really work—and how you can best take advantage of their unique technology and work around their shortcomings. Even if you don’t own a D1, David’s explanation of how digital photography works will be a valuable resource. David is the founder of Pro Shooters LLC, publishers of DigitalPro, the first digital image management software by and for professional photographers.

First of all, let me just say that just the photos in this book are more than worth the price of admission. Moose and David have done a great job of not only making the "users manual" much more understandable, but they have given real world examples for use. I also quite appreciate the historical background for this family of cameras. The insights that Moose includes, for example which WB settings to use, are based upon his experience. I tested this in the field this past weekend and the advice is right on, it saved me a lot of color correction work. The technical dicscuusion by David regarding the D1 family works, and ancillary software, is a must read. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a D1 series camera. I use this much more often than my users manual. If I had 4 thumbs, I'd give it "4 thumbs up", but as it is, I can only give it 2. Great job, Moose and David.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Enjoyed!, March 6, 2002

After spending [lots] on a camera and not knowing where I should start, this easy ... investment more than paid for itself! I guess it all depends on what you want out of the book. I wasn't looking for my hand to be held, just the tools I needed to take great digital images. The D1 Generation delivers!
Oh yeah, I love the images! Now I have a mark for my own images!

This review is from: The D1 Generation (Library Binding)
This book is better than the Nikon instruction manuals that come with the D1 family cameras, but only marginally. A lot of the information in this book can be found on digital photography websites. Also, this book is rather padded. Far too many chapters include duplicate information which leads me to believe the author simply did a cut-and-paste job on several of the pages and used them throughout the book. Another thing: the photos in the book are (for the most part) very nice but the repoduction is very poor. It is difficult to see the quality that these cameras are capable of by looking at these soft, slightly out of focus images. There are some useful tips regarding white balance and extra software, but for the money I felt this book was a disappointment.
