I wanted a gun that would deliver the heat quickly. This gun has two ranges and the high range is what I was looking for. It delivers what it advertises. It holds the heat to the solders melting point. There was no overheating or burnt material. It also has two lamps by the trigger to illuminate the job in weak light. I am very satisfied with this soldering gun, it functions well and has a real nice balance when working.

This soldering gun is a classic, and constitutes an example of a great tool that has NOT been replaced with a cheaper-to-produce but inferior product. The modern guns are as good as those I used when I was a boy 40 years ago. I recently purchased this one to (finally) replace a lower wattage pencil soldering iron I've been putting up with for years after my first Weller gun broke. This gun has all the heat I need and then some. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting and sitting while waiting for some twisted wires to finally get hot enough to melt the solder. With the 550 that wait time is only about 10-15 seconds for your typical 12 or 14 gauge stranded wire (such as you find in larger circuits in cars). It helps to use the thinner 1.0 mm gauge rosin core solder of course. Now that I have this gun I feel like I'm set for another 20 years of use.

The Weller Soldering Gun is a solid value for the price. This is a smart purchase for the electronics hobbyist or home projects solderer but it's probably not up to standards for the professionals out there. The kit tips are well shaped and the gun heats up very quickly. Be aware that for those looking to start out, this product is not a substitute for a pen style soldering iron as it's a bit too big for easy handling on detailed projects like board work.

When I was a kid (60 yrs back), I had a Weller soldering iron which lasted me well into middle age, then it disappeared (purloined, I think).

So for many years I owned a Wen, and it finally quit. Back to good ol' reliable Weller. But guess what -- times have changed. Right out of the case, the lights didn't work. I had a spare bulb from my old Wen so I solved the problem. But hey, what could be easier to catch in final inspection than a burned out bulb?

Another oddity is that in my iron, the fixture holding the bulbs just sort of floats in the iron; apparently the extra 0.1 cent worth of plastic needed to secure it was left out of the design.

So I suspect this Weller will not come anywhere close to lasting the 25 years the previous one did (nor will I). Another company unfortunately taken over by bean counters.

I recently purchased this for auto wiring soldering. It is so much better than anything else that I've used (guns and irons). The high wattage makes it extremely fast to use. Get one!

Weller has been making guns like this for decades and they know how. It was received with one of the element nuts a bit loose, which resulted in poor heating, but after that was tightened it works great. I use this gun for soldering large electrical connectors, sometimes outdoors in the cold. It has plenty of power, heats quickly (not as quickly as the old Wen guns, but still quickly) and is not too heavy.

Really like the soldering Gun. I bought this to replace an older lower wattage (standard one) weller that no longer works. Wish the case had a bit more storage for a real reel of solder, etc. Nice for heavier work, but not so nice for fine electronic work.
I would recomend this.

Gun I received did not heat properly, 260 watts?, and neither of the built in work lights would light. Does not have the quality of the gun it was to replace.
