I bought a D6300, which as I understand is the modem-equipped version of the D6300 router.
After a couple of months spent in vain to tame this poor beast, I put the D6300 in a closet and went back to the previous modem/router . Here is why:
(A) D6300 configuration management is done via firmware, not software. This causes a number of complications , the largest of which is that Netgear Tech Support does not recommend you use the configurations backup/restore utility. Thus, after each new firmware install, you need to RE- INSERT MANUALLY all configurations made, which may be hundreds (if they're not, then you have wasted money buying this product). Imagine if your pc or tablet would require you to reconfigure everything every time you install a new release of the operating system!
(B) I have entered 7 requests for support during the first month, including 4 for malfunctions: These 4 all concluded with the request that I reinstall the firmware, because I was told that this way the defect would go away... ( But reinstalling the firmware you lose all configurations, as stated above).
(C) The firmware (currently V1.0.0.72_1.0.72 ) can only be installed via Internet Explorer ( no version specified ... ) and only via ethernet cable.
(D) I have experienced many failures, and I am now convinced that Technical Support is right in its recommendation to reset the config to factory default on any new installation and then re-enter manually. Too bad that this makes the product unusable.
(E) Friday, suddenly, my static IP address was no longer reachable from the internet. I first reinstalled the older modem (a Pirelli) to see if the problem depended on the DSL provider, but everything worked. So I contacted Netgear Support. Now it's Sunday, and I am still stuck.
