5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best devotionals ever-and a bargain!
This is a book that has come in and out of my life over and over again because of its ability to quiet my anxious mind and strengthen my weak faith. It is a selection of thoughts from 17th and 18th century spiritual writers from the pietist and quietist traditions. One would never know that, however, since each page still burns with relevancy for any troubled soul...

3.0 out of 5 stars devotions
I am enjoying this devotional. The daily words are uplifting and encouraging. This is a good selection to be used as a daily reader.
Having read this for several months, one thing bothers me. Mary Tilleston did not write anything. Each day starts with a couple Bible verses, than that is followed by short spiritual writing's by various people. She gives there...

You may wonder how you ever got along without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars DAILY STRENGTH FOR DAILY NEEDS, November 26, 1999
I can't begin to count the many times this daily devotional has given me patience, guidance, comfort, strength, etc..... Years ago, I began dog-earring the best readings..... Now, about 75% of the book is dog-earred......I guess I'll use sticky tabs now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tired of "Fluff Spirituality"?, September 16, 2005
The difference between this book and the devotionals written today is like the difference between a prime rib steak and a bologny sandwhich. A lousy analogy, but point made. "Daily Strength for Daily Needs" is full of reflections that must be read over and over in order to fully grasp the sentiment. Part of this is due to the excellent writing and terminology used from years ago, however it is not a difficult or frustrating book to read. There is a rich and reflective depth brought forth in a verse,a piece of poetry and then a reflection by a Christian from the 16th century to 18th century. This is the main devotional I have used for about 8 years now and it is full of underlined thoughts that have been compelling. Each year when I cycle back through it, I am always challenged afresh.I hope mine will last for 40 more years--it is rich beyond comparison.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written to Accompany a Beautiful Book, Feel Better Each Day, January 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I downloaded this Ebook, and started my Studies. I discovered that I needed a Bible on the Kindle to go along with it. I have my review for Authorized King James Version Holy Bible for Kindle (Kindle MasterLink Technology): Best Selling Bible of All Time KJV Complete Old Testament & New Testament (Bible for Kindle / Kindle Bible), in which I discuss HOW I switch between books and study, so I won't repeat that here.

However, this is a great book to bring your day into perspective. Of course, don't expect overnight miracles - but applications of these poems and writings to modern life does much to uplift the spirit (I recommend first thing in the morning - but any time during the day is good ;-)

I simply found the day I wished to start, and then end just before the next day. After recording my reflections on the Kindle, I hit back - and the page is saved for the next day.

If you want - you can right click on the 5 way controller when on the Title Daily Strength for Daily Needs, and there is an option to View your Notes and Marks. Any time of the day, you can open that up, and feel a breath of fresh air take the weight from your stress.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST!, August 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
In short:

I purchased this edition as a gift for my Mother and plan to gift more. I do not have experience with any other release/version so it is my recommendation to purchase the version with Ruth Graham's forward included. (The seller I purchased from, LeonardoPDXBooks, had it available CHEAP and in perfect condition. No complaints).

More opinion and background:

This edition was originally given to me as a gift from a very dear friend. At the time I did not think much about it and stored it away only to stumble across it a few years later. Now, I wonder, "WHY? Why did I not read this when it was gifted to me? It's amazing!"

And it *is* truly amazing. I sometimes even think that the verse and prose of the day is written just for me and that no other copy would have the same verse and prose as mine as it always seems to be answering the burning questions that I have had in my heart for days or weeks even.

Yes, it is written using scripture from KJV, but there is no other way to receive God's word. And a fair amount of the poems and prose are written using a more complex usage of the language and sentence structure than most today are accustomed to so I can see how some readers may find that a deterrent though I HIGHLY encourage them to continue reading and allow for the words to translate themselves as the reader reads them over and over, studying the scripture, and mulling the words around in the heart and mind. I for one did (and still do) have trouble understanding some of the poems after the first read, but as I continue to read I am finding my comprehension skills improving much to my delight.

This book is beautiful and it's a wonderful companion to The Bible when one may not find the time to devote to scripture reading. I have personally gained much strength in my Faith and Trust in the Lord because of this little book.

5.0 out of 5 stars great pieces of wisdom for each day, January 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book couples verses from Scripture with pieces of poetry and wisdom from many sources. I love that each day is dated and makes you truly reflect on what you've just read and how you want to apply it to your life. I'll share a quote from the book of J. Tauler, " Therefore do not relinquish your desire, though it be not fulfilled immediately, or though ye may swerve from your aspirations, or even forget them for a time....The love and aspiration which once really existed live forever before God, and in Him ye shall find the fruit thereof; that is to all eternity it shall be better for you than if you had never felt them."

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, November 27, 2010
I keep a copy of the hard cover version on my coffee table and still read it frequently.

I have many devotionals but this one is just superior to any other you'll find.

Bible verse, classic prose, and poetry with a spiritual theme on each page/each day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, May 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am a new Kindle user. I was able to figure out, quickly, the book had monthly links. It is a simple matter to click the month, then page to the day, and read the day's reading. The next day is even easier, it opens up when you open the book. This has been a family favorite in my family for generations. Fantastic for a free book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Little Gem, March 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This daily devotional has totally amazed me! Although it was written about 200 years ago, I have been pleased with how relevant it is to my life. If you have trouble reading the "old" English, it might be a challenge, but the meditations are refreshing and applicable to living the Christian life today. Each day has a Bible verse or two and then a few short commentaries to expand the thoughts expressed by the verses. The digitized version isn't perfect, but it is easy to read past the occasional mistake without having it distract from the message. This little gem will encourage you in your Christian walk.
