About the Author

Susan Pope holds a BA in dance from the University of Maryland and a MA in dance education from Teacher''s College, Columbia University. Currently she teaches dance for Newark Public Schools at Dr. E. Alma Flagg School. Previously she taught dance for New York City Public School at I.S. 218/Chiidren''s Aid Society Community School in Washington Heights where she also directed the SUMA/Children''s Aid Society Dance Company. In May of 2000, Susan was invited to the White House to speak at a conference hosted by President and Mrs. Clinton titled Raising Responsible and Resourceful Youth. She recently published an article in the International Journal of AAHPERD titled Mourning Into Dancing - The Transformation of Lives. In 1995 God called Susan to direct the St. James AME Church Dance Ministry. Under God''s anointing the group has grown from 8 women to over 100 members now split into 7 groups. She shares this mantle with her husband and 7 other directors and choreographers. Susan is a member of the National Liturgical Dance Ministry Network where she serves the Northern New Jersey chairperson; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and the National Dance Association. She leads workshops in liturgical dance and dance education. She ministers in dance at conferences, conventions, weddings, funerals and seminars. Susan is the mother of Spencer Charles Greene and the wife of Darrell Allen Pope but most importantly she is a child of God. She believes God created her with the definite purpose of helping others through movement.

This collection is a must read for every dancer, every art lover and everyone! Each submission reminds me why I dance and to keep pushing myself towards my dream. Reading the stories of famous dancers and even children is a true reminder how dance impacts us at different stages in life. Great work Susan Pope!

I was actually featured in this book and I am also in some of the letters on the front cover. This was back when I was in 6th grade and I am now in college. I'm just thinking about why this book has made a huge impact on me and it's because it's a book of inspiration. Some days, I feel like I don't have the power to dance anymore, why am I even dancing still? I still have my book from when it first came out and I just open it and it really inspires me every single time. It is a wonderful book just as Mrs. Susan Pope was a WONDERFUL dance teacher. Please support her and you won't be disappointed :)

The act of dancing is speaking an understood language among other dancers! Dancing is used to express through movement what you feel, have experienced, and hope for in the future. This book not only captures why dancers of all genres and backgrounds dance; but it speaks the language of dancers through writing, poems, and essays! This book is an awesome book especially for those who dance, are interested in dancing, or just want to listen to the language that dancers speak. I LOVE THIS BOOK, I read it ALL the time. It's one you have to read - It might encourage you to learn the dancer's language and be inspired to write your own " I Dance Because" testiment to the GREATNESS of DANCE in it's every aspect. "I Dance Because..." is a MUST HAVE! Exhilarating, intriguing, and a good read, I give it 10 stars and 2 thumbs up! I Dance Because....I read this book-You should too!
