5.0 out of 5 stars Give D.A.P. a try. It worked for me.
I have a lab mix dog who is very frightened of thunder, lightning, rain, fireworks, or even a loud noise next door. He shivers and tries to hide or usually he tries to climb up my back and sit on my head (he's 50 lbs). If it's raining at night I don't get a good night's sleep because he's so frantic. (REAL NAME)
For a while there we were just locking him in the bathroom, waiting until he stopped freaking out and would keep him there while we slept. All the while he was still freaking out, but only silently. We tried benadryl and even valium to no avail. With valium he would freak out while the noise was going on then after it was over he'd sleep all day. I was very skeptical about D.A.P. but I got some of the spray anyway because I was desperate. I can't believe how great it works. I spray some on a bandana and tie it around his neck. Now if it's raining he is much more calm. At night he can sleep in the bed with us if it's raining and he doesn't try to sit on my head anymore. Today is the 4th of July and there are fireworks going off everywhere. Normally he'd be shivering, whimpering and clawing at me. This time, with D.A.P., he's still quite concerned about the noises, but he is just sitting there quite. He doesn't like it, but he's not freaking out. This is the only product that has actually done something to curb his phobia of thunderous noises. A dozen thumbs way up. Oh, and five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprised this actually works!, June 22, 2007
My husband and I recently adopted a 6 year old Labrador Retriever that suffered terribly from separation anxiety whenever we left her alone. For the first three months we had her one of us was forced to stay home because she would become extremely destructive if we both left to buy groceries, go to the bank or anything else. Brand new steel crates were torn to shreds, welds broken, bars bent. Crate floors, both the tough plastic kind and replacements we made from 1 inch thick plywood, were utterly destroyed. And then there was the frantic barking that our neighbors, who live 3 acres away, heard the entire time we were gone -- this through closed insulated windows! We tried EVERYTHING short of doggie tranquilizers to calm this normally happy dog down -- a calm routine, food filled kongs, homeopathic stress relievers, aromatherapy, lights on, lights off, televisions on and off, views out the window, no views at all, sneaking out the door, feeding her heavy meals, taking her on long walks beforehand, making sure she's relieved herself, turning down the air conditioner, even parking the car at a distance so she wouldn't hear the doors close. Absolutely nothing worked. We always came home to complete havoc, with fur, water and crate materials everywhere. So when we stumbled upon the Comfort Zone DAP diffuser we figured, what the heck, it was certainly worth a try! Either that or we'd never get to go to the movie theater again. :-(

We plug the Comfort Zone diffuser in about a half hour before we leave the house. The dog is still confined to a crate (a place she normally enjoys when we're home) and is given filled kongs and other treats. She has water to drink and we still leave a television on in an adjacent room. And now when we come home we find her to be very relaxed, sometimes even sleeping, with no signs of destruction and no one reporting frantic yelping. To us, this is a real miracle! We're already leaving our dog for up to four hours at a time with no problems, a real godsend for us because we live in a very rural location far from shopping, banks, theaters, post office, doctors, etc. And today we're going to go to the movies for the first time since we got her. Yay! :-)

The bottom line: This product works for our particular dog. I wish it wasn't so expensive to use since the bottle is reported to last only 4 weeks. Even so, it's worth it to us just for the peace of mind that our dog is no longer miserable when we have to be away from her.

Would that they'd had something like this for people back when we had teenagers! I would have bought it by the case! ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional product when used over time, February 15, 2008

Bayne (Honolulu, HI) - See all my reviews
My wife and I adopted a 1yr.old German Shorthaired Pointer from the Oregon Humane Society in August. Those of you familiar w/ the breed know they are very high energy. This particular guy came w/ no history. So, we knew we had our work cut out for us. We quickly learned that he had an extreme case of seperation anxiety. If left alone for any amount of time in any place he would become so panic striken that he lost all control of his bodily functions. The behaviorist at OHS quickly recommended this product to us along w/ the name of a vet that could prescribe medicication for the short term. Of course, we were skeptical of the D.A.P. because of the usage instructions. At first, it seemed like it was just another hook to get $30 (pet store price) a month out of our wallets. The vet medication came and went with little success in behavior modification. It just seemed to make him very tired all the time. After the first month of D.A.P. use however we were pleasantly suprised to find that when crated in the room with the DAP diffuser he could be left w/o incident for small periods of time. After about the 3rd month, his anxiety issues were reduced to a little whining here and there. Thinking the problem was solved, we discontinued use, attributing the progess to him feeling comfortable in the home w/ us. BIG MISTAKE. After approximately 3 weeks his behavior showed signs of being erractic again, and after a month we were back to anxious tension. So, needless to say we are back to using D.A.P. and he's doing very well. The bottom line is that this product may not be a quick fix, but I can assure you, from my own experience, that it DOES provide considerable relief for pet separation anxiety when given sufficient time.

We have a rescued dog who has turned out to have severe separation anxiety, so we're trying many different things to help him. We read all the reviews of this product and hoped it would help our dog -- but unfortunately, it hasn't made a difference for him. That doesn't mean it's not a good product, though -- from the research we did, it IS helpful to many of the dogs out there, even though it hasn't helped ours. Our advice would be to try it and see whether it helps your dog or not -- it may be the answer for you, the only way to know is to try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! Great for senior dogs!, July 28, 2009
This review is from: DAP Dog Appeasing Pheromone Electric Diffuser (48 mL) (Misc.)
I am so impressed with this product. I can't believe I have had dogs for most of my life and never heard of this before. We just went through a very stressful move. There was only about 6 weeks notice and things were nuts. My 17 year old dog was a nervous wreck. He was pacing so much that he couldn't even stand up (he is a pacer to begin with, but it was really, really bad). He would get himself so exhausted that he was beside himself. I hired a pet sitter to help me with him one day about a week before the packers and moving van came. She told me that she thought he was at the end of his life and would probably not make the move. Hogwash!!! He is a strong happy dog with a great love of life (as long as food is involved). He was just taking his cues from me because I was totally stressed. Anyway - about the DAP - my vet told me to try this so I ordered and paid for the express shipping. I got the plug in as well as the spray. It took about 36 hours before I really noticed a difference, but boy what a difference! He was calm and relaxed. And because he was calm and I could stop worrying about him, I was much more relaxed ... either that or the DAP worked on me too! I kept the DAP plugged in whatever room he would be in, so the living room during the day and the bedroom at night. I sprayed his bed 2 -3 times per day. By the time the packers came (about 5 days after we started using it) he just was as happy as could be and totally relaxed. I tried to keep him in a room that the packers were not in but he was not happy and wanted to be with me. I let him come into the living room and put him on the sofa. He actually fell asleep with all the packing and tape tearing all around him. He slept like that for 3 hours ... so long that I was actually concerned there was something wrong. He was very irritated when I woke him up and went right back to sleep for another 45 min. Then he got up just as happy and refreshed as ever. This is NOT normal behavior for my dog. And he continued like this for the full 3 days that the packers and movers were there as well as the 13 hour road trip to our new place. I am still using it, as he is still a little unsure of things. Night time seems to be the worst. His eyes aren't so good and he is in a new environment, so it is understandable. Last night he got pretty hyper for a little while. I moved the plug into the bedroom and then I also sprayed his bed. Then I brought him over to his bed and got him all settled in it. He rubbed his face for about 30 seconds where I had sprayed and then was fast asleep and snoring like a big dog. Magic!!! Sorry for the long post but I just can not say enough about this product!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stopped Chewing, November 7, 2007
I've been using DAP for a couple of years now & it really works for behavioral problems. My dog is a chewer & chews furniture/carpet when we leave her alone. The DAP helps alleviate her anxiety & she doesn't chew anymore. I wondered for the longest if the product really worked or if it was a coincidence, but whenever I run out of the pheromone she starts chewing again.

1.0 out of 5 stars not for my crazy pup, December 16, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: DAP Dog Appeasing Pheromone Electric Diffuser (48 mL) (Misc.)
My dog is sweet, yet acutely insane... She barks at the slightest sound. She's easily startled- which leads to loud relentless barking. Bark collars didn't work, so I needed something else. My vet recommended I try this. I bought the diffuser to give it a try. One of the reviews said it takes a while to start taking affect. Well, it's been a month or so and I just don't see a difference. I also bought the spray, that didn't do it for her either. So I am going to give it to my parents to see if it works on their dog. It might work for some dogs, and it might've worked for mine if she was younger. She's 3 years old so the pheromone might not be as effective on her as it might be on a younger dog.

I am probably going to try doggy paxil next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Product, October 27, 2007

We were unsure of this product based on the reviews. Our 8 year old Lab is very anxious during thunderstorms and fireworks. Living in South Florida, both are a part of our everyday life it seems. She would pant, shake, and cry and it broke our heart. With the diffuser, she is clam and relaxed during the longest of storms. She actually sits in one place and the panting is at a bare minimum. What we love about it is that we no longer have to administer the vet prescribed tranquilizers. She is a happy baby. Thank you DAP.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing how this works, March 24, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is really amazing, we have an silky terrier with terrible seperation anxiety to say this product worked 100% would not be true but it did work, along with this we use a Kong toy that we fill with treats and peanut butter to keep him occupied, his bathroom antics all over the place are much better using the DAP, the first time we used it he didnt go to the bathroom in the house at all.Other times alone were small bathroom problems.
I do think it works and would recommend it. It also lasts a long time We unplug it as soon as we get home.
