From School Library Journal
Grade 7-9-- While hiking near Chillen Academy, Jason McCormack unwittingly releases an evil spirit trapped in a cave. The spirit haunts Jason, believing him to be the Native American warrior who imprisoned him hundreds of years earlier. Jason is blind, and when the spirit follows him back to Chilleen, his beloved seeing-eye dog Erroll tries to protect him. But Erroll's outbreaks of viciousness, though directed at the spirit, force the school authorities to send him away. Erroll leaps from the car taking him from Jason and returns to the cave in search of the spirit. Jason and his friend Cissy surmise where Erroll has gone, and steal away to the cave in order to save Erroll and confront the spirit deep in its lair. This is a moderately interesting tale, unusual for its blind protagonist. Jason is presented as a can-do young man, frustrated more by other people's misperceptions of him than by his blindness itself. Dog lovers will respond to Jason and Erroll's warm relationship. The climactic cave scene is a long time coming, but the suspense will hold most readers until then. --James Witham, Lexington Public Library, KY
