Editorial Reviews

Inspired by true events, Darkroom tells the insightful tale of David Mills, a man who develops crime scene photographs for the Salt Lake City Police Department. Haunted by the dreadful and often grisly images, David experiences a dangerous disconnect from reality. Consequently dividing the union between himself and his wife Coy, who is suffering from her own psychological battle related to pregnancy complications. The family divide weighs heavily on the relationship, and while Coy agonizes over her strenuous predicament, David embraces a complex inner monologue, escaping his subdued generic life with Coy, to the stimulating relationship that he envisions having with the victims depicted in the photos.

1.0 out of 5 stars I just wasted time I can never get back. May 27, 2014

This is not a movie. I have no idea what to call it but it was not a movie. I'm really surprised there were folks who rated this so high. Must be amigos of the clan who created this mess. Half an hour into this parade my dogs were closing their eyes and they never sleep during flick night. BUMMER-RAMA score here. I hope the next flick this producer kicks out is better than this boring story line.

5.0 out of 5 stars First time director scores big! January 15, 2012

I enjoyed Darkroom from the start as the action came at a pleasing pace. The story was really interesting and got me talking long after the film ended. Acting was top rate and I was happy to see a strong female role played so well. Technically the film was also a success with great editing and sound design. I am glad I have added it to my library.

This is a rambling strange series of stories all involving the same people but puzzled together in a jigsaw helter skelter way without any timeline. In other words it keeps jumping back and forth in time, making no discernible whole! Ergo logic remains distant as the separate pieces float in and out of focus. I must admit this seemed like a film school project that was rushed into final production to get a product out the door~

1.0 out of 5 stars Huh? May 13, 2014
By Ida Red
Format:Amazon Instant Video
This movie is incredibly disjointed and didn't make a bit of sense. I was so confused through the whole thing. It synopsis says the movie is about a crime scene photographer, but the one crime scene photographer in the film wasn't even a main character. And the ending made no sense. Idk. I don't see how this was based on true events.

1.0 out of 5 stars Darkroom May 1, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
I don't understand why viewers gave this movie high ratings. It was boring, the acting was bad, the storyline reeked and oh, did I mention it was absolutely boring? I gave it a one since someone paid money to produce this film. To me it had no merit at all. Not one redeeming quality and not worthy of one dime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising July 9, 2012

Wow. I did not expect much from this film, but it definitely delivered.

The story was riveting and fresh. Had a solid ending too. Took a while to understand it all, but I love that about it.

The film is so strong, interesting and visually mesmerizing in so many ways that I am willing to forgive the flaws. It would be a shame to skip seeing this because of this imbalance. David H. Stevens, Andrea Lockhart, Sila Agavale put in strong performances.
The dialogue is stilted at times, but given the nonlinear/ vignette format/ unreliable narrator components make the interesting character development all the amazing.

This film is a VISUAL FEAST. Cinematography is unique, interesting and is worth watching the film on its own merit.
The sets are sparse, but are almost another 'personality' in the film.

I think if the viewer goes in with an open mind and just let the movie 'take them for a ride' and don't let themselves get distracted trying to define and pigeonhole what they are watching it is a great experience.
It becomes the kind of movie you want to keep going back to because it is multi-layered and one discovers that the characters are very relatable and empathetic.
David is not crazy schizoid but a regular guy dealing with life in a NOT SO UNCOMMON way if you think about it.
People are complex and writer/director, Joshua Tai Taeoalii, takes this and tries to creatively capture the essence of a what lies beneath the often banal surface of our very human existence.

I liked the beginning of this movie but towards the end it was too much, I was disappointed in the ending.

Thought it was going to be entirely different.
