Editorial Reviews

Review

"Dark Side of the Moon is a quick and fast read, that excites your imagination and quickens your pulse. There is also a clever and surprising twist at the end. If you love sci-fi that is relevant to our present society, this is a book you must read." -eNovel Reviews
"Ahmad Taylor has clearly outdone himself in the first installment of this book. Despite not being a regular reader of sci-fi, I quickly become one of his biggest fans. I am engulfed with the vivid and detailed world of modern technology Ahmad has brought me into which comes along with the price of morality. When mankind let themselves ruled by technology instead of their heart, human life becomes merely a stepping stone for them. 5/5″ - Read 2 Review.com
"I didn't see the ending until the last moment. But knowing what kind of person Derrick is, you know what he is planning to do and you also know he succeeded, but boy - you wish he hadn't. I can't wait to read the sequel - I'll be biting my nails until I get to see that everything turns out ok. Releasing a series of prequels, which deal with each main character in turn, is a stroke of genius. I will certainly read them all." -Ella Medler.com

From the Author

Writing this novel was a journey of self-exploration and understanding, much like the main character: Derrick Thomas, and his journey to find and save his lost family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong entry by Ahmad Taylor February 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Not the first novel written by an ex-cop I've ever read, but definitely the one which uses the most up-to-date jargon and technology. The writing style is crisp and to the point, without unnecessary flourishes and archaic turns of phrase. This is a modern read based on a modern idea and using sci-fi threads which are spun perfectly to fit right into this realistic world. Another refreshing feature (to me) is to be able to read a thriller where the weapons are not the same as the ones used by Philip Marlowe in the earlier Raymond Chandler books or Roger Moore as he first played British agent James Bond, but a rather more sophisticated, imaginative, slightly wishful-thinking-type new cache.
Twists and turns at every corner make Dark Side of the Moon an unexpected and enjoyable action-packed read. You get to see glimpses of a really talented family and you can't wait to learn everything about them. By the time the storyline settles into a full-blown thriller, you wish you could be right there, in the middle of it all, shouting encouragement and warning Derrick about imminent danger.
Derrick Thomas is the sort of guy that brings a smile to your lips - from his morning routine to the over-the-top care his mom gives her baby son and the relationships with his older sister Jeanie and strong-willed father Martin, everything draws you in and compels you to be his friend. The more you think you've worked out what he is going to do next however, the more you find yourself pointing down a different avenue. This is where Ahmad Taylor's police training comes into its own - the action sequences and assault and hostage situations are not something just any one of us could get right.
I didn't see the ending until the last moment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Strong start but then it's down from there.... June 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The book opens with a man waking up from a dream unable to move. We don't know who he is or where he is but when his eyes close the statement he hears in his head is Why is it so dark in here? Soon after government agent Derrick Thomas awakes from a dream to find his researcher father left him a message asking him for help. When Derrick goes to his father's office to give him what he asks for he finds his father hasn't been there in 5 months.

Soon Derrick is hunting for friends of his father's to help him. Each person gives him a little more information but soon after he leaves them they are killed. Derrick also learns that his sister, Jeanie, is missing as well. He struggles to find out what the government could have done with them and where they can be. When he returns home late after searching for them he finds his mother gone as well. He wants to look for him but his eyes close and all he hears is the reoccurring theme of Why is it so dark in here?

Derrick is in a race against time to find out where his family is and what the new project is the government is working on. Everyone he has spoken to has ended up dead...will he be next?

The beginning of the book had me confused. I wasn't sure who the man in the opening was or why the book suddenly shifted to Derrick. About a third of the way through several chapters were dedicated to Jeanie's early life. While they were interesting they didn't seem to fit in at that point in the book.

I will say that I was intrigued by the book and it was a quick and easy read. After reading about two thirds of the way through I knew what was going to happen at the end but I wanted to make sure. The ending turned out similar to what I thought but there were so many unanswered questions.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different April 11, 2012
By Bob
Format:Kindle Edition
A fairly short book that had a slightly disjointed timeline. The phrase "Why is it so dark in here?" kept recurring and this made me intrigued and wanted to know how things were going to end. In fact I worked out the ending about 1/3 of the way through the book. Set in an unspecified future time, secret agents Derrick the main character and his sister Jeanie have a way of communicating that cannot be broken by broken by hackers this and the recurring darkness theme made this a different book. It was not exactly my type of read but certainly different.

2.0 out of 5 stars Like a Grade B or lower movie March 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not a well written book. To be fair I would like to know what happens but can not bring myself to finish this book. This is a first for me, I have finished books or movies that are boring just to see what happens. I will not finish this one and I am at the 1/2 way point.
The Author has a good frame going here but not the substance. I hope he continues to write and learn this craft. Really would be nice in a few years to see that this story has been rewritten and is winning awards.

5.0 out of 5 stars great debut novel February 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I stumbled upon Ahmad Taylor through a friend and I'm glad that I did. I am not much into reading science fiction but I devoured this debut novel from Ahmad Taylor from cover to cover. I was pleasantly surprised with this book. Dark Side of the Moon started out a little slow, but quickly accelerated. The thing that made this book stand out for me was the well-defined main character Derrick Thomas. Appearing a bit childish at times, it was refreshing to watch the main character evolve into a young man as he began the quest to save his family. A well-developed story involving a kidnapped family, secret government agency trying to thwart a research before it begins, and murdered colleagues. I will await the next novel by Ahmad Taylor!
