Breath-taking Simplicity and Sincerity,
This review is from: DASI Prayers by Women (Audio CD)
From hearing samples on other websites, I had high expectations for this CD, and when I received it, the beautiful packaging only increased them! Karnamrita met them in full; this is one of those CD's you put in your player and suddenly the world's another notch more beautiful. It almost makes me an optimist. The recording quality is excellent and the instruments and voice very organic-sounding. I can imagine it would be perfect for yoga, but Karnamrita's voice is engaging enough just to listen to or meditate on. It's also a great CD if you're interested in the Indian language, because the booklet has all the lyrics and they are easy to follow with Karnamrita's voice. There is also an English translation for every song, and the story behind each saint. I cannot help feeling, however, that the music has been watered down through the western influence (recorded partly in India and partly in L.A.) but the result is that it is easier on our ears than some Indian and Asian music is. For example, Karnamrita's voice is largely unornamented, which surprised me but I'm learning to appreciate it for its simplicity. This music will have you on your knees in prayer before you know it, whatever your religion or creed! It would also be a great gift for any woman.

A Moving Masterpiece,
This review is from: DASI Prayers by Women (Audio CD)
Musically and emotionally compelling, Karnamrita's voice spans the range from heartbreakingly plaintive ("Yamunastakam") to complexly erotic ("Story of Pingala") while always remaining firmly rooted in the devotional modality that so thoroughlly imbues all her work. You won't find a more unique and inspiring collection of songs rendered so thoughtfully. A superb work of art.

Simply Amazing and Moving: World Music to Be Inspired by.,

I cannot be as eloquant as the other reviewers below but Karnamrita's music is a magical gem to be discovered. This is world music, not 'new age', soulfully inspired by her tenure in India. Her vocal training is up there with other vocal greats like Lisa Girrard (of Dead Can Dance fame).I would wholly recommend others to buy this inspirational album.

Divine Perfection,

I bumped into this CD by chance at a temple and had no idea what kind of genius would burst forth from my speakers.Other reviewers have put it so well that I can scarcely add to their words. This woman's music is beyond moving. I have a massive Hindu devotional music library and this one became my immediate favorite. I have been listening to it nearly daily for three months now. It seems as if it never gets old. Religious sentiments are immediately evoked by Karnamrita's voice and music. It would make the militant atheist cry for God. Oh, Radha, one cannot but hear Your voice on this CD.

Karnamrita's voice gets 100% of my consciousness. When I first just heard her voice my head nearly snapped, then hearing her on stage I could feel my kundalini rising. In my 56 years, she is the most Soulful.I listen to Karnamrita when I want Inspiration. I can listen to her anytime -- yoga, massage, commuting, before or after class. I'm just sayin'...

One of the few selection of songs that seems to breathe harmony and love in your surroundings each time they are played. Needless to say, they are a favourite addition to my religious music collection.

This is one devotional music collection that I can't quite stop listening to. There is no review that I can write which would do justice to it. I first heard Karnamrita play at the Yoga Farm in Grass Valley, CA. Her voice was so enchanting I had to buy her CD. I've listened to it countless times in my car.

The voice of Karnamrita carries a full-bodied resonance and purity of heart rarely found together in western singers of eastern chants. Her voice flows and spirals sound across octaves in the way of Dhrupad singing, and the old soul of sean nos (gaelic pre-christian song). She creates a pure-hearted, independent, all-chakras female sound free of the artifice and/or soul-lacking sound of mainstream singers. Typically, anglo singers singing eastern chant just rely on their memory of some impressive lyrics and stick to a generalized tone and their artist image to attain some kind of success in the music business. Karnamrita's work comes from another plane, she IS the multifarious music, and may she stay true to that essence.Karnamrita not only was raised singing within an ashram environment with lots of visiting indian kirtan performers, she studied classical Dhrupad style voice (practiced as a meditation) in Vrindavan, India with Pandit Vidur Malik and Tarun Krsna Das for four years. In fact, she is one of very very few western singers of eastern chant who has not only seriously paid attention to the complex art of indian classical singing, but also to it's life essence. Karnamrita connects with divine being in the way that this music of the vedas intends, each note carries deep presence, and she sings from the transcendant inside out. The songs on this CD are long and full. "Gopi Gita" is my favorite piece, and it really embodies the capacity of the human sound to resonate the divine - deep, high, light, dark, clear, vibratory, and always changing. (It even has a live peacock crowing in the background at one point, what more could one ask for?) Forever grateful for the gift of this recording, and how it encourages my own soul, I count it as one of my top ten favorite CDs on planet earth.

I can play Karnamrta's CD every day and never grow tired of it! It is super-excellent, in all respects. Her voice is deep and richand she sweeps you into the mood of each song, until the album ends, all too soon, and you find yourself playing it again. It is uplifting and divine! Please come out with another CD soon! We love it.
