Product Description

This concert gem stars the Dave Holland Quintet (featuring Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, Robin Eubanks, Steve Coleman, Marvin 'Smitty' Smith) at the peak of their musical maturity: merging passion and logic, spontaneity and group interplay with sparkling clarity. Each musician works as a cog in the delightful engine of swing, relating his phasing to the supple beats laid down by Holland and Smith. Without a piano, without a 'standards' song repertoire, and with poise and effortless concentration, the Quintet creates palpable musical shapes using innovative themes and variations. A improvisational Free Jazz masterpiece, for all the concert's unique inventiveness, they project an utter melodic mellowness on their tunes: Vortex 1, Vortex 2, Homecoming and Wiguts Waits for Weights.

Bassist Dave Holland's legacy is still being written, but his distinguished career has already earned him a prominent place in Jazz history. His inventive, thoughtful, and original sound has not only earned him numerous accolades and resounding applause around the world, but left an indelible mark in the evolution of music. This film presents a music lover's greatest reward... a full-length concert DVD will rivet your attention to every phrase that's performed and transport you to a higher musical world.

(Holland) has defined the best in jazz over the past three decades… Wheeler is astonishing. --JazzTimes Magazine

Kick ass from jump, and even if the video's plain envelope exterior were rich with graphics; it would be superfluous; the video's 54 minutes of intuitive no let-up improvisation is that damn good… The bassist of choice for the second wave of the avant-garde. Here he leads a Philly trombonist, a Brooklyn M-Baser and New York's most in-demand drummer to musical nirvana. --Philadelphia City Paper

Jazz's premier modern bassist --The New Yorker

I gave this 1 star because it is the exact same gig as the "Live in Freiburg" DVD. So don't buy both. It's a great DVD, but not worth screwing me over when I buy both (how can I return it? It's open). I think the post-production quality on the "Live In Freiburg" version is superior, so buy that one.
