4.0 out of 5 stars Dirt cheap, does the job, some caveats
This is a dirt cheap replacement Li-ion battery for the Canon HF100 and similar Canon camcorders. It's a generic battery rated at 7.4v 700mAh, which is 190mAh less than the Canon battery that came with my HF100, but it's also 28 percent of the price of a Canon battery, so there you go! It seems to work fine, but don't expect an hour from it that the Canon BP-809 offers...

1.0 out of 5 stars Does Not Perform
I used this battery with my new Canon camcorder equiped with a Canon light. The genuine Canon battery lasted about 50 minutes and performed well. This battery lasted about 8 minutes. I will buy an additional Canon battery as my back up battery. Do not buy this battery as it does not work well at all. There are good aftermarket batteries, but this is not one of them!

One second nice thing I instantly liked about this generic battery (after the price) is that it can only be recharged outside the camcorder, which is good so I can charge this battery while shooting with another. Notice that to charge a Canon battery externally requires a $56 charger. In fact, don't attempt to charge this through the camcorder because I think Canon said charging generic batteries internally causes damage to the camcorder and voids the warranty.

This generic battery does not show remaining time in the viewfinder. There are four LED lights on the battery to indicate strength.

There were sessions when I needed more than an hour's shooting, but never had a second battery until now. If I can get another 30 minutes for cheap, then this battery fits the bill. If I need more time, I'll buy another one. Although this battery has a 3-year warranty, it'll cost $20 in nominal fees to fix it. I say trash it (ecologically) and buy a new one from Amazon. In fact, I don't expect longevity in this battery....I just don't think it'll have as many discharges/recharges as a Canon.

So this is a good bargain, but if I want more reliability, I'd get the Canon BP-819. I just think the Canon BP-809 is way overpriced.

1.0 out of 5 stars It is confusing, October 29, 2008

I bought a BP-809 and did not find enough information in instruction manual. Before use, I pressed the button to check battery capacity. It showed 1 Red and 4 Greens. I do not know what this means ? Almost full or almost empty ??

As usual, I tried to recharge the battery before using it for the first time. I left it on charger for 2 hours I came back to press the button to check the capacity. It still showed 1 Red and 4 Greens.

I started to use it on the camcorder. I played back recordings for almost half and hour. It should have recorded a change in capacity. I checked again. It still showed 1 Red and 4 Greens. What does it mean ???

I feel it is very important to be able to know the battery capacity to avoid important recording is interrupted due to no capacity
