Editorial Reviews

Review

I have been working with DB2 for several years now, and most of my knowledge has been derived from in-house workshops, IBM manuals, and the infamous Bookmark on MVS systems. But after purchasing this book, I've increased my comfort level with DB2 200%. The investment was well worth it. I feel like a DB2 nerd now, and it feels great. Mr. Ellery knows his stuff. -- Brian Mettcafe, Bank of America DBA Support Group, Charlotte, North Carolina

Most of what I read in this book is critical to applying to most high volume transaction environments... -- Dale Reidman, Seattle, Wa

About the Author

The issues of production, online processing begin with performance and availability. Performance refers to the amount of time required for a user to complete a transaction. In the production, online environment, when the system either does not perform well or is unavailable, no other facets of the system matter. Consequently, the discipline that is required of the design to achieve high performance and availability takes precedence over other system features. This book was published for this purpose, to help you maintain your production online relational database environment.

The author, Julian Ellery has worked in many DBMS environments and combines the expertise and know-how obtained in over (15) years of programming within this book for those requiring the tools necessary to using relational technology to its highest performance levels. The book is wriiten with practical true-life applications and does not theorize or speculate. Each example is a tried and true methodology for maintaining an online and batch production system that are both usable and applicable for achieving the highest levels of performance and availability on your system. This will be the only up-to-date DB2 reference guide you will need in maintaining a high performance DB2 UDB under OS/390 environment. Readers will be referring to this book time and time again for guidance on getting the most out of their DB2 software.

5.0 out of 5 stars An all-in-one reference, November 19, 1999

I maintain a high volume DB2 shop. The formulas I found in this book for determining system usage for implementing new user apps, utilizing DB2 Estimator, Optimizer and DB2 PM has made my work easier to monitor and maintain. The formulas for system capacity, usage, and thruput work. I really didn't think they would but they do. I don't need IBM manuals, I need more books like this one.

My shop was in the stages of upgrading and I had purchased this book. After reading thru it I gained a number of insights into assisting me with our conversion efforts. I found valuable capacity planning methodologies, physical design methodologies and tuning pointers that has made my job a lot easier. I am now a jr. DBA in my shop. I was a data base analyst. The investment was well worth it.

I think this is a good book for someone who does not have the time or patience to go through the IBM manuals . But nothing new or any insights about how things work inside . Still I think it is not a bad book .
