Book Description

This unique guide, written by a senior member of IBM's DB2 development team, is the first book to cover DB2 version 6. And the only book to offer a trial edition of the software on CD-ROM. You will discover how to install a DB2 server and clients, design and administer a database, and much more.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

DB2 for Dummies approaches problems of database engineering and administration via IBM's DB2 Universal Database solution. It assumes essentially no reader experience with relational databases, and absolutely no experience with DB2. For those reasons, it is excellent. All three of the authors work for IBM on the DB2 team, and they've merged their technical expertise into the Dummies format nicely.

The book earns its keep for two classes of readers. First, it's well-suited to people who have no database experience at all and want to learn via DB2. Second, it's a fine text for people who have experience with another relational database management system (RDBMS), such as Oracle or Sybase, and want to learn how DB2 works.

As is typical of books in this series, some of the cutesy prose comes across as way too contrived ("Imagine buying a travel guide ... but without an index!"), but the technical information readers need is never far away. Sections begin with text explanations of whatever feature is being introduced (these are great for experienced database administrators trying to get a feel for DB2 terminology) and then turn to procedures you can follow step-by-step (which are comforting to nervous novices). In turn, all important configuration and administration tasks get ample coverage, and readers leave able to do most everyday DB2 work. --David Wall

Topics covered: IBM's DB2 Universal Database 6.1 client/server database system for Microsoft Windows. After coverage of client and server installation, the book introduces instances, databases, table spaces, tables, and key administrative tasks like replication and performance monitoring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good Intro to DB2, September 16, 2003

If you aren't a database expert and you want to learn DB2, this book will do it. After using this book, you will be able to use DB2 very effectively. The authors did a great job.
The CD contains an older version of DB2, but it is sufficient to learn DB2. You can quickly learn the later versions, which can usually be downloaded from IBM as evaluation copies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a great entry-level book on DB2!, November 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: DB2 for Windows for Dummies (Paperback)
This is a great entry-level book on DB2! It also provides a very useful introduction to general relational database concepts. There is installation and connectivity information that I found to be particularly useful, and best of all ---- accurate!!! The CD contains a "try-and-buy" copy of DB2 Universal Database (Version 6.1). Although Version 7 is already available, this book was probably finished too early to include Version 7 information. I hope an updated edition is in the works!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to a complex database - it is about time!, October 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: DB2 for Windows for Dummies (Paperback)
This book has been very helpful in introducing me to IBM's RDBMS software. In recent years, it seems DB2 on Windows is making noise, and not the goto DB2/390 version.
